Just buy another broken unit and pull the parts that you need. Please don’t expect my poor Apple company to have to keep track of old parts - Just doing that wastes man hours and transport resources and takes up space. For what? - A few cheapskates who want to keep an old iPhone 5 running? What am I missing here really. You can spend a couple hundred dollars fixing a $50 phone if you wish. But do not force Apple to accommodate this.

You can even spend 10000$ to fix the 50$ iPhone, but it won't show any picture on the screen because greedy MULTI BILLION $ company APPL prohibits that in their software. Talk about eWASTE.

Good chinese 3rd party screens for an iPhone 5 are super cheap. Because Apple never implements good quality (could hurt their margin).

Bunch of nonsense.
Apple is a lazy wannabe privacy fighter.

why is iCloud drive and backup not yet end to end encrypted??

why do they keep phone logs on their servers?

You are right, they are not 100% but they are much better than the others. At least they don't collect your location behind the scenes like Google does with Android. Just look at their new privacy labels, it exposed FB and its Whatsapp messenger to many people + Google still didn't update their apps probably scared of the reaction of people when they see how many data points are collected in the privacy label.

Apple also one of the few tech companies that do not rely on data to make money like FB, Google, Microsoft. Microsoft Windows is a horror show for privacy.

Oh yah, just like I can’t do for my 1968 VW.

OK - well I hope you get what you want I suppose, but really, it’s not friendly to the environment to keep old machines running. It’s better to recycle and buy new. It’s a financial burden to support antiques.
Who’s fixing iPhones from 1968?

We are taking about current and recent models.

For example, I bought an iPhone and 1.1 years later, the mute switch got loose. I should be able to buy a mute switch from Apple and have access to iPhone service manuals on how to replace the switch and reapply the adhesive seal. For a nominal price like $30, not $599 + tax for a “out-of-warranty repair or replacement”.

I’m trying to learn from what you say.

probably I don’t know enough about this issue. Possibly I should comment only when I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert. Most things about Apple and about environmentally friendly I’m fairly confident about, but who knows maybe it’s me who is out to lunch on this one.

i’ll make it the subject of my study and see if I change my opinions - thanks for yours

They are much better than the rest but I do agree that the people tend to think (=Privacy/Secure) its more of a grey area.
It’s definitely a gray area along with their views on free speech as well. Practically it’s not much more than thin, shiny gilding to prop up the stock since stock price is all that matters now.

Ooopsie. Thought you said bought an iPhone model 1.

So you have an iPhone 11 with a broken switch? Maybe it’s too hard for mere mortals to repair it.

Buy AppleCare next time. Or upgrade every year like I do.

Or is it the $600? Ask them to do it for $300. Would that be more reasonable?

I use my iPhone almost every day, so it’s worth updating yearly for me.

Go try and buy a replacement computer chip for the space shuttle. I think the government got charged 100 grand for some antique IC just to fix an outdated computer on the space shuttle at one point in time long ago.

private enterprise certainly can help with that switch. Probably that switch is made by Murata, so maybe can find it by looking for parts at seg electronics market in Futian city, Shenzhen.

Or as you say, pay the $600

where there’s a will, there’s a way.

An off brand screen could easily have Trojan screen capture hardware as a hidden feature”

I support Apple for disallowing potential security breaches.

Maybe the issue is Apple software. Run your own software on it - write your own operating system I guess.

Apple iOS is pretty complex. Do they even allow original iPhones to interact with an Apple account online? I’m guessing security could be part of the reasons why they prevent this?

censorship is a big issue, I used to hear in the news that Iran and North Korea censors stuff and every human right activist blow their longs screaming at them. Now we have the president of the united states censored from Twitter , Gab.com was kicked out of Google Play and App Store. Not because its illegal, because Google and Apple does not share their opinion.

But this is another's topic discussion!

What do you do with the old phone after 1 year?

If you sell it to India or somewhere for peanuts, I guess problem solved, for you.

Most people can’t afford a $1000 phone every year and intend to keep them for 4-7 years. For people who got them used, and use them for 4 more years, it’s even more important.

I pass it down the line as a gift. Or sell on kijiji for 50-60% of retail new price or so Bonus gift it to an employee. Same for Apple watches - I upgrade every year.

selling to India? How and why would I do that?

cant afford a new phone every year? Then don’t ever buy a new phone! I know you use your iPhone a lot though, so it’s worth staying up to date and it doesn’t have to cost more if you keep upgrading. Give up that $6 coffee and the few hundred dollars differential to upgrade yearly could be less painful than a $2000 (Canadian) iPhone.

run a business? It’s likely a business expense!

Buy a used phone, and upgrade every year to a new to you used iPhone! My son does that basically. He was rocking iPhone X. I gifted him iPhone 11. He sells his iPhone X. Kijiji is a website for selling used items and garage sale stuff. Voila!

Go study the used iPhone prices. If you keep it for 4 years it’s gonna be worth $100 maybe. iPhone 11 big one 512gb what’s that worth today? It’s one year old. Compare that to the new price from last year.

I agree. The average noble citizen abhors double standards and hypocrisy. At this point these speeches are more about containment and damage control than preemptive avoidance. These elite talking heads are morphing before us like a time lapsed portrait of Dorian Gray.

Are you in Canada, I'm too. So, that's a good reference.

I want to upgrade every year, but I have two reservations. The first is how easy is it to sell your used iPhone on Kijiji? For reference, I'm in Waterloo region. The second is sales tax, you pay that every year on your new iPhone, but when you resell it, do people account for the fact that you also paid tax on it? Or would it be like paid tax is not a part of the valuation for the phone?

Do you sell anywhere else other than Kijiji? Do you ship or only meet locally? Any tips and experiences?

I sold one of my old tablet on eBay many years ago and realized after all the fees and postage, it's not worth the effort. I'm curious on how you manage to make it profitable.

You got the basic idea of it. Ebay average price is what I go by for valuation. I show my old apple invoice to the buyer in order to show what I paid - including all taxes. I can't remember the exact details last time - but maybe you get half price after a year for last year's iPhone.

To make the story positive, the guy who buys the used iPhone 11 today instead of a brand new iPhone 12 today saves $500 or $900 let's say. He still gets a good phone, it's only a year old, it is not brand spanking new, but the money he just saved is applied to something useful like investing in crazy stock market stocks. After a few years of that it adds up. So yeah, make your money work for you. Live within your means and if you really really crave having the brand new toy, it's up to you. You only live once too! If you spend lots of time on the phone daily, it makes it acceptable to get the latest - that's the big Apple realization I think I made a long time ago. We are addicted to these things. It's gonna cost you 20 cents extra per day to have the latest instead of last year's model probably.

With Covid in Ontario - no brainer - go splurge. You deserve it. What else you gonna do - we are all pretty much stuck at home. Stay Safe and can't wait for no more pandemic!

I also own a MBP15 2018 and an iPad Pro 10.5. I am looking to get a new iPad Pro 12.9 when it comes out this year, hopefully with miniLED and stuff. I want to get an Apple Watch and also get an AirPod Max at some point maybe the next gen of it. I do have AirPods, beats Solo, Sony XM3, BeatsX etc, but they don't have ANC, except for the Sony. So, a lot of places to spend on Apple products... Then, maybe a Tesla Model X lol.

I used to upgrade my MacBook Pro with every new model, but I stopped in 2018. Also have lots of old iPads and no urgency to update.

iPhone is different for me because it gets continuous use every single day - so that’s a good comparison as to when is best to upgrade - relating to how often you use the device.
