He's describing Apple's development process as though it's Google's funhouse lab. That's idiotic and untrue. Apple was like that in 1996, and it's one of the first things Steve rectified, by firing nearly everyone in the Advanced Technology Group and cancelling their projects.

If Tim's Apple really has devolved into "string pulling" it's no wonder the Mac is in a tailspin.

I've been really happy with my 2014 iMac. Got the max ram and i7. I do light gaming on it via boot camp. Can't say if it would be worth it if work didn't pay for it. I'm surprised they are going to keep up the line since they are getting out of the display business.

Lets see what might be in the works for the iMac:

- DDR4 with support for up to 64 GBs of RAM
- USB C only
- SSD only
- Thinner design
- No more chin
- Kaby Lake processors
- macOS Sierra 10.12.4
- emoji's

Cook says that the desktop is "very strategic" to Apple because the performance desktops can provide is "really important" to a lot of people and "critical" for some people. He says the current iMac is the best desktop Apple's ever made and its 5K display is the best desktop display in the world.

Yeah, um, generally the latest in the line is the best you've made, depending on how you look at it I guess.

In a post to an employee message board obtained by TechCrunch, Apple CEO Tim Cook assured employees that the company is still committed to the Mac and that "great desktops" are coming. Apple's desktop computers haven't seen an upgrade in at least 433 days.

In regards to its future roadmap and how Apple employees can help push the company forward, Cook says that "you can rarely see precisely where you want to go from the beginning." Instead, Cook argues that "pulling strings" to see what's coming next is one of Apple's strengths, noting that the creation of Apple Watch led to the creation of ResearchKit, which lead to the creation of CareKit. Cook concludes the post by saying the company doesn't do things for a return on investment, it explores new things because it's exciting and might lead somewhere.

The lack of refreshed Mac hardware can be attributed to a combination of Apple waiting on chipmakers and suppliers to ship their new products and the Cupertino Company's renewed focus on iPad.

Apple's desktop Macs haven't seen upgrades in over a year. The iMac's last update was 433 days ago, the Mac Mini's last update was 795 days ago and the Mac Pro's last update was 1,097 days ago.

Sounds like loosing confidence of their employees now too.

Arrogantly telling us his year old computer is the best in the world. So, what is our problem.

Says about how important the performance of desktops is. Lets see:
-AMD laptop GPU's in the iMac
-Mac Mini is all laptop parts
-Mac Pro is several years out of date.

There are PC laptops with full desktop 10 series GPUs in them now, for the same price as an iMac. No excuses Apple, put a desktop GPU in the iMac if you really care about performance. Right now, not a single machine in your lineup can do VR, thats going to hurt you in the long run when studios start cranking out even more VR content.

Other than some guy with an analyst title spouting opinions, what's the support for the argument that the desktop roadmap is somehow dependent on iPads? This isn't 3 guys in a garage anymore, Apple is an enormous company capable of focusing on more than one thing.

I think the problem is that people want annual updates like clockwork, and Apple doesn't do that anymore. They update when they think there's enough reason to. I remember when iPhone first released and everyone thought it was crazy that Apple was only updating it once a year.

Lack of chips worth upgrading to, I get. Don't update just to update, do it because there's something of value to put in the box. My guess is Kaby Lake is what they were waiting for because it makes driving higher resolution displays possible with a single cable. A 5-10% bump in CPU power just isn't worth the tooling cost.

I would love a revamped and refreshed Mini paired to one of the new LG screens. Do it, Tim!
Yep. But I'm afraid what we will actually get will be another toy that maxes out with a dual-core mobile CPU. And this time not just the RAM but also the SSD will be soldered to the motherboard, the case will be glued such that not even iFixit will be able to disassemble it non-destructively, and it will only have USB-C. But hey, it'll be 2mm thinner than the previous Mini.

He better do something. For the first time since 2002 when I bought my first iMac (the iLamp) I'm seriously not thinking about a new Mac.

I think Microsoft has been and is a cancer on the world but the more I play with their stuff the more I think Apple has lost the plot.

Looking at the Yoga 910 or the HP Spectre 360 and it seems to be a very good marriage of a tablet type thing and a computer. Perfect for my use case of mobile photo editing. Especially since both have touchscreens and can use pen (I think). And less than the new MacBooks by a sizable margin.

Meanwhile Apple has the iPad and a crummy way to get photos into it and edit them in something like Photoshop or Lightroom, I can spend less money and get better functionality.

Apple needs to get off it's ass and innovate cause the iPad, while a great machine still has more limitations than it should have and the prices they are charging are insane. It used to be that a Mac while expensive was not much more or the same price as a high end Windows PC. Now it's like 50% more for 50% less functionality.

It's hard to take Tim seriously. Mac Pro, Mini and iMac are left on the dust. Displays might be gone forever.
His words do not follow Apple's actions.
I cannot express the frustration of professionals that depend on the Macs that won't get upgrade on a normal cycle. Not only the desktops. The new MBP is a joke. Expensive, 16GB RAM and lack of ports in favor of dongles. I want to believe Tim but man, it has been very hard. Get your act together FAST!

I don't know about you all, but I'm tired of hearing about Apple's epic 'road map' when it's been one disappointing product launch after the next. They're not listening to their customers because they think they know what's best.

2016 was a heck of a bad year for Apple, one of the worst they've had since the early 2000's. They better turn it around, and fast.
