As a Sys Admin, I totally agree. As a sys admin who has to use USB Flash Drives frequently, it is a soooooo annoying that I have to carry around a USB-A to USB-C adapter. Doesn't Apple have to use flash drives on their laptops? In their next redesign on their laptops, they should include a USB-A port...c'mon!
USB-A is an ugly reminder of a not-so-pleasant past. It becomes less relevant with each passing year as the hardware world moves on.

C'mon! These are external SSDs, not flash drives...
I like the swiveling A/C Sandisk "Dual Drive" in citysnaps' list. I have several; one of them is important enough to have an AirTag keychain on it and has lasted for years.

Note that the ones with the metal case are much better than the plastic ones; the swivel and detent will loosen up eventually, but with the metal one you can clamp it with pliers and make it tight and secure again.

Maestri is not leaving the company and will lead the Corporate Services teams, including information systems and technology, information security, and real estate and development, where he will continue to report to Apple CEO Tim Cook.

He’s not retiring, or even leaving the company at all.

Then again, he’s 60, and he earned $25m+ per year for the last decade. It’s likely that he will want to retire in a couple of years anyway and this ensures a stable transition to the next generation, which is a healthy way for this kind of thing to proceed.

Apparently the average age of a Fortune 500 CFO is 53. Kevan Parekh is 52, and a veteran of the company. Seems like a good time to make the change.

The best macs they have made since Jobs passed been AFTER Ive left. The whole "thin at all costs" was making their devices useless in professional settings. I dont care how pretty a device is if I need 40 dongles. I'd easily pay an extra $250 to NOT have to carry and buy dongles.
When Jony left, we got an HDMI port and a SD card slot. I can go without USB-A but I must admit, I would like having one. You can certainly buy USB-C flash drives, but it doesn't mean everyone you interact with will do the same. Those haven't caught on at all. Ive was terrible for Apple design. I still hate having to reach around the back of my Mini to use a USB port. Why they can't do a SD card and USB-C on the front like the studio is beyond me. It's not like it's a $2000 premium to get ports on the front. The oldest computers in the world had everything in the front.

TLDR; Please do not bring back Jony Ive and his wind tunnel Macs.

Apple is calling it "planned succession". This guy is younger than Cook, a key player on why Apple is the richest company in the world, & has been grooming his successor for only months. Does not pass the smell test.

Why not - be specific? There could be a dozen or two reasons why he wants to leave.

Yikes! this guy is in some deep crap. look at all the new roles he has to cover. enough for 3 people!!

Good Luck and God Bless.

What are they trying to drive the poor guy nuts with Job burnout???

Maestri doesn't want to have to deal with the EU/upcoming anti-trust stuff that will surely hit Apple come next year....he is moving on while he can...
If the EU falls apart or breaks apart will any EU laws still apply??

Large corporations have early discussions with law makers it’s not something that these corporations get caught out of the blue.

I suspect he might be moving to a different role due to boredom, other growth opportunities, recessions, passion and interests have changed. It’s not all doom and gloom.

Agreed. Nice having a keyboard that isn’t crippled by a spec of dust as well. Ives can stay gone. Without Jobs there to reign in his ego, I couldn’t stand the direction the products were taking and his meddling with software design as well. Clearly out of his league on that, and the remnants remain.

I'm not sure it's exactly Jony Ive's fault. He's just an industrial designer, not an engineer. It's highly unlikely Ive wasn't involved in the way the switch itself works - he just wanted the device to be thin. And the butterfly vs. non-butterfly MacBook Pros for example don't have a difference in thickness. To me the new MBP design lacks the sexy the previous one had. I'm still keeping my work 2020 MacBook Pro even though I'm due for an upgrade from my job because I find the new ones super ugly and clunky and keep cutting my fingers on the sharp vents at the bottom when picking them up.

That's the face of someone handling billions of dollars in profits 😃
