I'm not sure if you can call it "selling out" when you open a store (e.g. Bath, Southgate) with precisely zero of the product.

Using the same logic, Apple today also sold out of dodo, pineapple and sarin.

apple purposefully ships low quantities to carriers. it's been part of apple's business plan ever since tim cook took over. remember tim cook in that conference call said one of the priorities of apple is to get more customers into the store specifically related to iPhone purchases and activations?

by providing the carriers with pitiful supply #'s, they are sending a message to customers that if you want the color and model you want of the 5S, you need to come to the apple store

I don't blame apple for doing it like this, nothing worse than having a fully stocked warehouse with iPhones wall to wall coz there was too much supply and not enough demand......I mean look at the 5c. :p

denied by not having the account password at local vzw. But they had stock of grey 5s only. Didn't receive any silver or gold.

Didn't pay attention to the 5c colors, etc.

Don't think they had sold any new iphones this morning.

Small town Texas.

Went to the closest verizon wireless store @ 10:15am CST and after 15 minutes walked out with a space gray 64gb. Then went to walmart and picked up a blue 5c for my wife @ 79.99 .

No lines at either place, verizon said they had white and gray in all sizes, no gold. walmart said they had 5c in white green and blue. in 16gb only at the one where I went.

I think I have an idea of who bought all the gold ones...

All the haters and the naysayers and the Samsung shills can't stop the tsunami.

Huge worldwide demand for iPhones.

China mobile sales coming in 7 weeks.

iOS 7 a huge hit especially with younger demographic.

64 bit. Fastest phone.

Sorry haters. It's not flop time. It's time for Android to shed a little market share.

Anyone getting a 5c?

If I like the feel and shade of color I may pick one up to carry me over to the 6. Getting a bit sick of the black 4/4s that I've had for the last 3 years.
I've got two (one for me, one for my wife) on a UPS truck getting nearer and nearer to my house as I write this. Was much more attracted to the style of the 5c body than the 5/5s body.

Doesn't seem that apple will break any records on the 5s; as limited supply constraints makes that a given. As for the Gold/ how do they call it unprecedented demand if they had next to nothing to begin with.

Of course the demand is unprecedented. There has never been a gold iPhone. Therefore the demand for said phone is, in fact, unprecedented. :D

Same for me - got up at 5:30 and went to a big Verizon store nearby that I figured would have plenty of stock. I was 40th in line and they were so swamped they couldn't even check me out until almost 10.

I was hoping for either the white or the gold in 16GB, but they were already out so I snagged the 'space grey.' Not a huge fan of the color, but I'm probably slapping a case on this bad boy anyways. I went bare (with the exception of ZAGG front & back screen protectors) with my 5, but I want to avoid all the little nicks and scratches this time around. I'll probably get a Mophie Helium case if I can confirm that it won't interfere with either the Touch ID sensor or the dual LED flash on the back of it.

I'm simply amazed how much demand there is for the gold one. It's not my taste and so I would have gone for the Space Grey if white had sold out. When I first heard gold was an option I thought it would be an embarrassment and not sell at all. Shows how much I know about the market

Would you have gone caseless if you had been able to get the gold one?

Conspiracy theory...

So let me get this right...

Apple/Foxcomm has been making new phones for months and the run out within a few minutes of launch? Really?

Smells like production was intentionally limited to create the n illusion of scarcity. Apple would't do that to manipulate the market, have nice headlines etc, would they?

Yes, the would because Apple is the best marketing company in the world.

Went to an Apple store this morning at 8AM and they had no white, gold and very limited supply of black.

I got there at 7:30. Made it into the store @ 10am. Only blacks available (sky gray). Got the 32 meg and got my wife the 5c. Was out by 11 after restoring the backups on both phones.

Best of all between my 4s and her 3GS, we got a 250 trade in value. Slightly higher than the quote from gizelle.

Why does it make people so angry that Apple will sell more iPhones than ever?

It is such a childish almost bizarre reaction. Each iphone that Apple launches sells more than the one previous and there is such hate from people because of it.

It's like they hope "This is the time!" that an iphone will be a dud...yet it never happens.

They mad.

I'm not telling it's not true, but I won't believe any "incredible" from Apple anymore. Abused word from them

True, it's no longer credible. If only there was a word for that.

But imagine what analysts would say if Apple didn't claim demand was outstripping supply.

You must be new to this. You are just one of thousands that repeat this bogus "scenario" every year...always turns out Apple was accurate.

Demand seems quite strong...I went to the Apple Store at Boca Raton Mall here in Florida, and when I arrived at 8:10am, there were already 300-400 ppl in line. Luckily, there's an AT&T corporate store right across from it, and the line there was only 20-25 ppl.

Neither store had much stock of Grey/White, or Gold as I was told, and neither had 16GB devices in abundance, in any instance. In fact, the AT&T Store had NO 16GB devices and no Gold or Slate, just black 32GB or black 64GB. They weren't expecting any other colors for at least a week.

Since I wanted a 32GB black, I was in and out in just over an hour. :D

I'm from Illinois and had the pleasure of visiting Boca Raton last month. It's a beautiful place and actually visited the apple store you're talking about, I'd love to make it back there. Anyway grats on your 32gb space grey! Exact model I want... However I have to wait until my upgrade is available in a couple of weeks

Did you ever think that high demand means, you know, high demand? With all those long lines at the stores, do you think it's all just marketing spin?

Spin cycle away!...

An Apple store with 10 gold iPhone units, makes me glad Apple isn't my grocer. I'd hate to wait til Oct to buy my loaf of bread.

Another rumor site has a story about Tim Cook visiting an Apple store in CA on iPhone 5s launch to which someone replied "Tim was probably looking for a gold iPhone." It's funny because it's true!

Loading a store with 10 phones of a brand new color the company hypes and call it amazing when the product of limited supply for each of its stores and third party retailers runs out and label it "due to heavy demand", hmmmm...

It'll sell tens of millions to be sure, but it seems to be irksome to some people. I remember driving three hours to be at the first Apple store opening on the East Coast. That was an Apple experience. Glad my Apple experience is not waiting all night only to be told the next morning that the color of the phone I want is not available. Otherwise you'd hear me among others on twitter.

how can Appple say incredible demand when they knew they only have limited supply?

My commiserations to everyone stuck in this zoo. I've been there myself and it's no fun.

Last launch day (for the 5) I skipped the circus and went for the 4s instead: Big discount, not much competition, a proven phone (no antenna-gate, no scratch-gate) and plenty of cheap cases and accessories. Keeps life simple.

Good luck everyone. I know the chase can be fun, but it can also be exasperating.
