Good grief. Is there nothing that people won’t fret about? What do people do with their iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches? We know people aren’t turning them off. Is it so hard to charge a pair of headphones like you would your phone or computer?

I bought the AirPods Pro instantly, without watching a single review. The specs and features were too compelling.

These on the other hand will be like the Apple Watch was for me - I'll likely wait until 6th generation for them to be of real use.

It doesn’t sounds like you know the actual details of either the “controversy” (at least according to your spin) or how “Hey Siri,” for example, works.
🤣 🤣 No I know all about it, it sounds to me like you are trying to justify it when there really isn't a justification for it. And you know how I know that? Because Apple themselves admitted they were in the wrong and now make it as something that the user can opt in for.

I think you are actually confused as to what the controversy was.

£550GBP ($740USD) and you get a bra instead of a case.
Wow, I have a hard time justifying the $599 price. They sound good but I don't think that sound THAT much better than less expensive headphones like the Bose 700 or Sony XM4's. Strictly from a sound standpoint I think my Master and Dynamic M65's actually sound better and they are less expensive. But the noise cancellation is better on the Airpods Pro Max as well as little things like switching devices. I still think $599 is pushing it price wise though for what you are getting.

Anyone paying $740 USD for these is crazy.

It’s just the principle. I absolutely love Apple’s products, software and ecosystem, but MAN why can’t they just include this information from the jump? Lol

Obviously it’s not a big deal I love my AirPods Max, but Apple just makes some strange decisions sometimes.

Side note: Being able to adjust volume with the Digital Crown is amazing. The build quality / sound / features of these are so worth the price IMO.

Unless you’re using them 10 hours plus a day, I would expect these to get 18-20 hours battery life per charge for the first three years. Then natural aging for year 4 and 5 would mean maybe as low as 15 hours. So, £75 for a battery replacement in 5 years? Fine by me.

These batteries aren’t going to age horribly like in-ear AirPods due to their size.

So outside the case after 72 hours it goes into ultra low power mode and turns off Bluetooth.

I suppose that means without folding the earphones flat. Just keeping them still.

How to turn them on again after 72 hours?

Will it still detect you picking them up while in ultra-low power and is that enough? Or do I need to press any of the buttons?

Thats not the case. They probably want to earn more by separate sales of cases, as the case is not good quality wise and will be the first to fail in the lifespan.
Build wise the case is not bad quality wise. It’s thick, hefty and heavy too. It is also the same outer material as the smart folio and Smart Keyboard Folio outer layer. Don’t know what this cushiony but hard material is. I don’t see it failing any time soon. It’s just ugly really, I find it good.

Pressing and holding both the crown and the Transparency button for several seconds (I counted around 6-10) will power them completely off (similar to a hard reboot on iOS devices).
Exactly! What’s up with the power button for turning things off, etc. How many things ALREADY don’t... how many times do we turn off our phones, macs. Show me the off button on the Apple TV. I do understand the sentiment but also let’s understand that these things will stay on 99.9% of the time in general... when I grab them and put them they are just there ready to go. If I lose them and launch find my, they are still there visible, etc.
MKBHD (or whoever from Apple briefed him or gave him talking points) has some ‘splaining to do about that “after about 2 hours” comment that confused the internet for 2 weeks.

So, in daily usage the smart case saves a grand total of 5 minutes before them going to low power mode anyway.

And in travel usage it shortens the “Find My” window from 72hrs to 18hrs, not even a day to realize you left them somewhere.

Think I’d keep them out of the case.
Indeed haha.
Regarding the case, it happens when they don’t move for that period of time, in that situation find my will have had the latest reported location. And if it moves, I’m guessing, they would go ‘on’ again.
My experience has been to gut reactively put them in the case when I’m taking longer than usual breaks... for such a premium product I kinda want to feel they are protected and the case does give me that. Plus if that rare instance that can happen (in a year or two or never): if they fall, they better have been inside the case. There’s no more “catching it by the wire” saves.

The new Apple support note is careful to state that the headphones have to be stationary for 5 minutes before they'll go into low power mode. So if you move them, for example putting them into a bag or even sliding them around your desk, they will stay fully on (probably to update its location) and the 5 minute counter starts again.

So, is there some type of wiring within the sleeve that the headphones detect? Or... is it the orientation of the speakers that trigger this "ultralow" mode?

It'd actually be handy if they could keep a FindBy beacon going even in ultra-low power. A Tile lasts for a year, you'd think with everything else disabled these could last a lot longer with their bigger batteries.

It is believed to be the magnet on the "case's" flap.

Yeah, I put "case" in quotation since that doesn't really fulfill the common concept of a case. :D

I think many are overlooking the huge benefit of a 3 day delay before Bluetooth and Find My are turned off. If someone steals these and are unaware of how to power them off completely, you can locate them for up to 3 days.

I'd be going to Grado for ultimate audio quality but they're an altogether different prospect, and not wireless.
