My iphone 5 preorder wasn't changed to shipped by apple until Wednesday afternoon. Are people really freaking out that it "still" shows as "preparing for shipment"?

A lot of worried people for sure. If they say it will be here Friday I trust that it will. They have mastered the art of sending millions of devices to different places and having all but a few get there on the same day. I think are just expecting more info by now and expect to see a status change a little quicker. I was a little shocked it sat on "preparing" for so long, but not worried about it. It is fun tracking it though.
Just got my UPS tracking number for a 6+/128/SG/Verizon. Apple's order status says "preparing for shipment" but going to UPS tracking site, I was able to look up my phone number under "Reference" and I got all the tracking info. Says it will be delivered by end of day 9/19. This was also one of those "Your iPhone has been reserved" orders that many of us got.

it might be because mine wont need to even think about leaving tn until thursday and is being held at the hub and is already in the last leg of the journey. Thats just one stop away from me. I could drive there a few times between now and friday...

Don't sweat it. Apple is working with all these logistics companies. If it says Friday, 99%+ likely you'll get it Friday. I think last year apple did a lot to limit our tracking until the last 2 days of the local voyage. I think this year they have successfully stopped all the tracking from china all the wy here. That or they had more phones stockpiled here already. Either we, I'm confident I'll have my 6+ and my wife's 6 on Friday.
I'm still scheduled for the Oct 1st-7th batch. So I have 2 questions...
1. When should we start seeing a change from "Processing Order"?
2. If I were to go to a local Target and find out they had some launch day 128GB 6+ Preorders left and call Apple, would there be anything they would try to do to keep the preorder? Or would they likely just let me walk and get it from Target?

I'm on the side of Apple Profile still says "preparing for shipment", while I've got tracking number from UPS. Pretty amusing but I'm not complaining. 
I am in Los Angeles and I am in the same situation. Nothing comes up for me aside from "Preparing for Shipment" (iPhone 6+ 64gb silver)

Is it in transit yet though? Just because a label is printed and a tracking number is generated doesnt mean the item is shipped. Apple doesnt consider it shipped until it has been picked up and scanned by the shipping agent (ups/fedex). Then it should update to shipped and the tracking number will also show in transit and origin or pickup scan
Entering your mobile # in the Track by Reference # section of UPS or FedEx tracking page has been successful for some.

From what I can see on my UPS My Choice, it also lists about 5 other reference numbers, which also included my Apple order confirmation number.
Whomever is trying to search reference via their phone number with no luck, try plugging in the confirmation number Apple supplied.
Well it is whatever phone number you used as your main phone number, whether it be a cell number or whatever number (without the 1 of course). Another ref that someone mentioned that worked for the one phone of ours that has a tracking number, is the order number - minus the last two digits. Someone said it was minus the last 2 digits and that was the case because I tried with the entire number and it didn't work but did when I took off the last 2 digits. You put either one under track by reference and not by number.
