Half of their retail stores are overseas; the App Store is available in 175 countries; and there are more than 2 billion iOS devices activated globally. I think it's safe to say they're a global company.
Excellent! Still doesn't mean Apple has to extend their interest in helping minorities or less privileged people get jobs worldwide, especially when their HQ campuses are U.S-based.

I understand what you're saying. However, diversity brings with it its own benefits that are more difficult to quantify. You mention you work in programming, so I'm reminded of the stories about training AI to recognize faces and the challenges some companies have had with correctly recognizing people of all skin colors. (Not to say that this is the issue you're having, of course, but just one related to your field.) If those companies had more diverse staffs, such issues probably would have been caught sooner.

If your company is committed to building a diverse workforce, then it would do what it takes to bring in that diversity (relocation bonuses, for instance). I'm not saying that you're doing something wrong, however.

“Diveristy and Inclusion” is a sham that just dumbs down everything.

The great thing about this program is, like Lisa's Environmental work, Apple isn't just throwing money at something. Some of the interviews with the recipients of the initial cash talked about how hands-on Apple is with this. There is a team at Apple managing this money like a venture fund, they're doing research and ensuing the money is being directly spent on programs that will have ripple effects in communities. Apple has so much money they could just put checks in the mail to random addresses millions of dollars a day but they're choosing to manage this like a business investment.
It probably is a business investment. The more people you have that can earn a good living and contribute to society, means you have more people that'll buy Apple products, develop new apps, become employees of tomorrow. Though they could target something bigger like universal higher education. All those future engineers, scientists, and doctors in the USA become shelf stackers for Amazon just because they weren't born into a family that can afford to send them to college. I am very thankful to universal higher education, nothing holds you back when you can get an education without barriers and crippling debt.

Nice way for Apple and Crook to throw another 30 million dollars down the toilet.

And when did all this “Equity” crap start? What happened to “Equality”? It’s not enough to have equal opportunity anymore. Now, “equal outcomes” are demanded. If you can‘t make it, the government will make it for you. If you can’t pass the test, we will weaken the test, or eliminate it altogether, or make it a lottery so you get in even if you’re not in any way, shape, or form, qualified. That’s just pure communism right there. Sounds just like “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”, doesn’t it? This is what Woke Progressive Liberalism wants to do to this country.

Steve Jobs very famously kept Apple out of any kind of “causes”, and didn’t give money to foundations or charities. And for good reason. He understood that corporations needed to stay out of social issues.

Equal opportunity is only fair if we're all starting from the same position. It's not 'communism' to help those who might need support to get ahead as well as their peers. It's civilised.

Nope. My parents made well over $250K yearly some 20 years ago. And I still didn’t have the funds to get me into college. I wish I had a scholarship like this for me but my parents made to much $$$. Crazy how that works

I couldn’t afford college. Therefore I didn’t go. I got past that obstacle and busted my butt and found a trade I like and now I make $150K a year.
Mind you my parents made very good money when I was younger. Over $250K yearly 20 years ago. It because my parents made good money and I was white I didn’t qualify for any “white” scholarships and my parents made to much $$$.
If you aren't against need-based scholarships, then how do you rectify this statement: "One person over the other shouldn't get specials means to help them get there."? Aren't need-based scholarships "special means?"

So you’re not qualified for medical school. We’ll let you in anyway, and even give you an M.D. degree, and allow to you to “practice” on people.

Yeah, those are the doctors I want. 🙄

i'm a bit confused — why didn't you qualify for "white" scholarships being white?

And what exactly are "white" scholarships?

Thats not how it works. Everyone in Scotland can get two degrees for free and you get student loans to cover living expenses that automatically come out your wages like a tax after you earn over £18,000 a year (which with about £100 a year at that income). So all you have to do is quality for the course you want to do, and if you aren't qualified for it there are pre programs to get you all the base knowledge you need. You don't end up with under qualified people, you end up with no obstacles for someone who wants to be an engineer or a doctor to work hard at it and they'll get. It doesn't matter if your parents have millions in the bank or have long given up on working and live of the dole, you as an individual can work your way up the same as anyone else. Isn't that closer to the American dream? getting yourself through collage rather than being lucky that your rich parents put money aside for your education?

When I am hiring someone I only care about how well they can code and are a self starter that don't want to argue with other members of the team. I don't care where they come from and they can work remotely. However, we get candidates from Scotland and mainland Europe only so it is all white (after two decades and hundreds of candidates). With me only managing to hire one female in that time. Whether I am targeting one position or dozens, I just don't get any more diversity than some people are German, or Polish, or Spanish, the bulk are Scottish.
Exactly this. But you must be biased since you only hire white men, it doesn't matter whether the hiring/talent pool is in the same demographic by and large. Diversity is a misnomer on these fronts; you want a team that's diverse in thought so that someone can think differently about a problem while everyone else is stumped. The irony of labels like race, gender identity, sexual identity being so important in these decisions for a people who 'refuse labels'...

That's the big picture thinking a lot of people don't consider and I'm glad you brought it up.

Growing the middle class makes more consumers. if you elevate people out of poverty, those people live longer, have more disposable income and it's a generational impact that ripples globally.

Pretty much, you can't build a business on people that have to work three jobs just to pay the rent. You need more and more people with disposable income that'll have kids that then 'need' a iPhone, PS5, iMac, etc. Do you want to offer $100 computers or make it that more people that can afford $3000 computers?

Just like apple raising money for blm while none of the money goes to good use just to the Marxist leaders that brought mansions it’s all a scam and apple has to be so woke and progressive it’s sad, I’m loosing all respect for apple as a company I still use there products but they are becoming social activists over a tech company I wanna why iOS 15 is a boring release they don’t hire the best people for the job anymore they just need to prove they are diverse, just go to an Apple store half of them know nothing about apple or what they are doing but they all look so inclusive that’s all that matters to them

that’s all im gonna say
Oh yeah?

I feel jaded about Apple these days. On the one hand they undertake reasonable actions like promoting research on enhancing diversity. On the other hand they propose to install surveillance software on iPhones, creating a blue print for surveillance for governments, the abuse of which could hit various minorities (e.g., gay people) in authoritarian countries.

This coming immediately after the story regarding Apple doing a piss poor job within its own ranks at this very thing isn't suspicious at all. Nope, not even a little bit.

Equity is BS. If 10 people want to be a doctor then all 10 people should strive to be one. One person over the other shouldn't get specials means to help them get there. It should all be equal regardless of your smarts, financial means, up bringing.
So the 100 years of denied access that created the wealth gap for people of color in America didn't happen? It's always been a level playing field?

Surely you don't believe that.

There’s not enough money in the U.S. to make up for 75% of black kids growing up fatherless. That’s just the way it is.
Growing up without a father has zero impact on the child. Certainly didn’t stop me gettimg my degrees and a very good job. You need ‘a’ parent or guardian, but even then as soon as you turn 16 you can cut ties and develop with baggage.
