“Affordable, consumer-level” (which, of course, is relative to how much money you have to spend) to me would be a 5K display that, combined with a Mac mini, would be similar in price to a comparably specced 27” 5K iMac. Two years before I got my home iMac in 2019, I bought a 4K Samsung monitor to use with my company Windows PC laptop when I worked from home. It cost $300. That was affordable, and it’s perfectly fine for what I do. But to spend $2,500 on a monitor, I’d either need to have a lot more disposable cash, or I’d need to be using it to make money, which would remove it from the “consumer-level” category.
Big +1 on that.

Perhaps Apple wants to avoid having a Mini+display "compete" with the iMac, which would be something of an Apple move. But it also means pitching a pretty decent monitor every few years instead of reusing. Or, from a sales standpoint, defering purchase of a new computer a bit longer because the upgrade cost is greater. Would be nice to buy 2 minis and 1 display over, say, a 7-8 period than one iMac. (adjust frequency to suit)

If it has VRR+120Hz+HDR like the latest MBPs, then yes, that $2500 would be justified.

A 5K display with all those features literally doesn't exist right now, so there is no point of reference in terms of price.

$2500. Affordable, lol. I don't know who this is targeting towards, if it isn't going to be mini-led or OLED, you're not going to get very accurate colors, especially blacks. And of course non-professionals aren't going to want to spend that much on a monitor.

Try 500 or less, the average consumer isn’t spending 1500 on a monitor.
Neither $2500 nor $500 is a realistic price. Both are on the crazytown end of the spectrum. Shoot for something between those and you have a reasonable price for a large retina-resolution Apple monitor. ($1500)

Oh I agree, no doubt, but 500 is certainly doable for the average consumer.

So sounds like we could get an "Apple Thunderbolt Display 5K" on Tuesday alongside an Apple Silicon iMac 5K, both using the same edge-lit 5K panel currently in the Intel iMac 5K. My guess is the price will be around $1500 or so since the iMac 5K should be around $2000-2500.

As Ming-Chi Kuo has tweeted that the Apple Silicon iMac Pro and Mac Pro will not ship until 2023, that means this Apple Silicon iMac 5K will just have M1 Pro and M1 Max.

Even at half the price, I wouldn't really buy this.

But I still find it a good initiative to roll out a cheaper version, because the Pro Display XDR IMO is worth 50% of its price, no matter how good it is, and don't get me started on the stand.

Going to be so overpriced.

Mark my words
If it happens, it's not that it's going to be overpriced, per se... rather, it will overshoot what a lot of people want, which is an iMac display without the iMac.

A ProMotion, Mini-Led, HDR display might be worth what they're asking... but that's not what a lot of potential customers are looking for, or are willing to pay for. It will be a very interesting product release, to see where Apple's head is at.

I know it's nowhere to be found in the rumours, but I think they could upgrade their iMac lines to using M2 processors overnight. Just a thought.

$2,500 would be ridiculous. Even $1,000 would be a stretch, but just to maintain consistency if you have an Apple setup, then sacrifice would be easier to swallow. Considering they occasionally throw away $200 24 inch Dells at work into ewaste, I seriously wouldn’t consider this just for aesthetics.

Been holding off buying the XDR Display waiting for the refresh ... maybe this is the time. In need a ~32in but not 7k.

Well there is the claim of the new 32" LG panel that Apple is testing in a standalone monitor.

Presuming that is a 6K panel, Apple could sell it for a lower price than the Apple Pro Display XDR, which would be refreshed with the rumored new 7K panel and A13.

Dear Apple, $2500 does not equal affordable. You can buy a maxed out iMac 24” with that. An entire computer. Which includes a built-in stand, in case you were wondering.

Look at what the LG monitors Apple sells cost. $700 for a 24" and $1300 for a 27".

Apple would be more $$$$ for either size and a 32" would be north of $2000 easy.

I still say if you want an Apple monitor then you buy an iMac. Because their monitors aren't going to be priced much lower.

This is the rumour I've been waiting for! Will be a great replacement for my Thunderbolt Display.

Couldn't care less about the iPad Air getting a better flash or a new version of an 8 year old design. Would be great if Thunderbolt4 technology now allows for additional Thunderbolt ports, instead of usb-c like the Pro Display XDR.
8 year old design? The iPad Air was just updated design-wise…

I just purchased a LG Ultrafine 4k from Apple a few days ago. I would love to return it for an Apple-made display of similar cost but I’m not getting my hopes up. $1499 is the lowest I could see it priced at.
