Anyone who has worked with these outsourcing companies (TCS, WiPro, etc), will not be surprised in any way, shape or form that this has happened.

It's a cultural issue.

Happily, their business model is being destroyed by AI, which provides more value than the net negative typical outsourcing "engineer".

Why did Apple not make sure Tata had security protocols in place?

Yes, they should have ensured the protocols were adequate and properly implemented, and should have addititionally continuously stress-tested the system by letting Tata know they would be hiring some white-hat hackers to regularly try to break into Tata's systems (aka "penetration testing")--or required Tata to hire them and share their findings with Apple.

But: The problem is we don't know the extent to which Apple did or didn't do all of those things.

But if you build them in the US, you can not sell them in India. India is four times the size of the US and is the largest country by population. Apple can't ignore India because the potential for growth there is huge.

But how many people in India can afford Apple products? A very low percantage.
