That letter from fb is some trump-era lying bs

I came into the forum to see what people were saying about the FB response, and I think yours is the only comment about it so far. What do people think about the comments from FB saying Apple is moving into the advertising business?

My life is wonderful because I never signed up, never used their apps, pretty much never visit any of their sites.
Ill say it again for the 2nd and last time: you dont need to have voluntarily signed up and used their services, for them to have built a model of you.

e.g. if you hypothetically had signed up for an account, without sharing your contact list, without putting in your favorite bands and books and movies, they would on day 1 recommend the “right” friends to you, and target you with “correct” ads, because you had already been fingerprinted and profiled.

this is the problem with something as invasive and pervasive as facebook.

at least with google — which has rhe exact same or better capabilities — i knowingly derived value from their service. ive enjoyed the utility from gmail, hangouts, voice, youtube, smartphones, and tons of other products over the year. i have less pf an objection to this tradeoff.

facebook, i derive nothing useful from.

just read the update an FB letter ... so they are saying Apple has a dominant market position, hmmm, Facebook/Instagram/Whatsapp is just a small business that needs protection. it's getting better by the minute /s.

**** Facebook. As long as they will not pass a resettable device Id to advertisers they have no room to criticize apple for not sharing data. The sole reason we want the id is for measuring campaign performance and to reduce frequency, but they will not pass it so they try to maintain data exclusivity as well.

Just to be clear: this doesn't mean Ads will disappear, it means I will get random Ads from who knows where, right? I don't care about Facebook, but I can see Google (and specially in YouTube) increasing the number of ads in the videos, if they can't show three well placed ads, they will show for example six to try to compensate and make you subscribe to their ads-free version.

Nothing is free.

A line from Judge Judy "Do you know how I can tell when Facebook is lying? Its when they open their mouth".

Facebook has done and continues to push the envelope of privacy invasion. When they get caught they say they are sorry and just do the same thing without any repercussions.

I don't understand this childish "Apple good Facebook bad" approach. Was it really a football game where I'm supposed to take sides? I guess I didn't get that memo.

The Facebook response is spot-on. Does it mean Facebook is a great company? Hell no, they are part of the worst that has ever happened to humanity and I'm very glad Apple is taking this step. Yet, Facebook is right about Apple too -- they are just another big tech in the same business, they have their own nasty stuff going on, and instead of seriously addressing it they are just playing the old distraction card.

Apple is part of PRISM. We've recently discovered Apple spies on its users too. End of the story.

Facebook is a blight. Simple. Apple isn’t a saint, either, but they are not as bad. Same as most elections, none of the candidates are ideal so you vote for the person you think will mess things up less.

Difficulty: for every person like you or me, who care about privacy, there are 1,000 others who don't.

And how many of the persons on this very forum, who care about privacy, are complaining that BigSur bypasses firewalls and VPN to send unencrypted data to Apple?

People keep asking this question. The answer is yes, of course I would pay a monthly fee for an insanely high quality search engine that didn’t track me and was completely anonymous. If one could be built that found high quality academic info, scientific literature, medicine, art, etc and all with extreme precision... without stalking me... yes I’d pay.

Are these "civil society" organizations also send harsh letters to Facebook or Google?
Just wondering. I mean it's funny talking harsh words to someone about issues created by another 3rd party.
