I can confirm that 2G ipod touch has game center because I use iOS 4.1 right now with my second gen. ipod touch, and iphone 3Gs. it's good to see that improvement. actually, in comparison, 4.1 is way faster, no lag. it turned out that iOS 4.0 (4.0.2 whatever) seemed to be beta test. so coming November, iOS 4.2 will be much faster than even 4.1. great.

i have to say... a lot of you need to suck it up and stop complaining... what other phone company supports updates that long... apple roles out updates for devices long after other companies stop. So stop your whining.

Yes true but the iPhone 3G has a lower clock speed I believe.

2nd generation:
ARM11 620 MHz (underclocked to 533 MHz),with internal ARM7 core for Jazelle acceleration

Samsung 32-bit RISC ARM 1176JZ(F)-S v1.0 620 MHz
Underclocked to 412 MHz

Might have something to do with it...or AT&T :)

Are there any reports of iOS 4.0 being slow on 2nd gen iPod Touches? (akin to the iPhone 3G)

And this is why I buy an iphone once every year when they get updated as to not be left out of updates. People with 3g or earlier should really consider upgrading.

Considering that the iPod Touch 2G was still selling as recently as a few weeks ago (I got one free with my new Macbook Pro) it would be idiotic for Apple to not support it!

(2G was the 8GB, $199 model)

No Surprise

Hardware is hardware. People would whine if Apple put Game Center on the 3G and it was slow and people whine when it is not put on the 3G. Can't make everyone happy....

Did I miss the part where I can walk into a store and buy an Iphone4?

I'll upgrade when I can.

And no I am not pre-ordering. If they can't provide, then I am keeping my phone, and they can simply stop ********* with it.
You appear to be in Seattle so it should be a relatively short drive up to Vancouver to visit one of the Apple stores there. You can buy an iPhone 4 outright there. You have to pay full price but it is officially unlocked and can be used by any GSM carrier around the world. That means that you can use it on AT&T or use it on T-Mobile in Edge mode. If you travel up to Canada, you can get a SIM and prepaid service or rent a SIM in Japan and use your phone there with local rates.

AGREED.

The touch 2nd gen is fine.. and i have backgrounds and multitasking on even. Also though, even if they were still selling it... you buy it knowing its dated hardware...

As a developer, I am very happy about this.

The 3G phone is now well over 2 years old and is very slow compared to the other iPhone and iPod devices out there. I know people have been holding on to their 3G phones for financial and/or dont-want-a-contract reasons, but honestly if you are still using a 3G, you don't know what you are missing.

Even developers now can't support a number of features on a 3G, like multitasking, Game Center, and camera focus and flash, just to name a few.

If you are into apps, please upgrade your phones to an iPhone 4. It's well worth it.

Ethan

That would make sense except that Apple has allowed the iPod touch 2nd generation to be supported by Gamecenter. This model of iPod touch does not support multitasking, nor the other features you mentioned.

Apple has excluded the iPhone 3G for no other reason than selling us new phones. The only significant difference between the iPod touch 2nd generation (supported) and the iPhone 3G (unsupported) is that one runs at 533MHz while the other runs at 412MHz. They use the same version of ARM processor and have the same GPU, the same amount of RAM, etc. There is no technical reason for Apple to exclude the iPhone 3G from Game Center so long as they include support for the iPod touch 2nd gen.

As a developer I am sticking to my own networking solution for the time being because Game Center excludes too much of my existing customer base. A huge portion of my customers still use hardware that is unsupported by Game Center -- heck a large portion of them haven't even upgraded to OS 4.0 yet.

What you all don't get is that for a lot of 3G owners, the benefits of things like Game Center, wallpapers, and Apple's bizarre concept of multitasking are not worth the cost of an upgrade and another 2 year contract with AT&T.

Well the real reason is lack of OpenGL ES 2.0 support in the iPhone 3G. Now they can have a class of devices with high-end 3D graphics. ;)

That can't be true because the iPod touch 2nd gen is supported by Game Center but does not support OpenGL ES 2.0.

2 1/2 hour drive is that short!

Your hardware is the same as the original 2007 iPhone which is 3 years old and counting.

People complain of the **** performance on iOS 4 with a 3G yet my 3GS is faster than it was on iOS 3.

Your hardware is old. Suck it up or upgrade, because I'd rather Apple concentrated on making the experience better for the people who have the faster and more capable technology.

And yet when Microsoft releases a new OS and it requires people with 5 year old machines to buy a new one people all scoff and say M$ sucks and Apple is the best.

Not that I really disagree with you - that's just the way it is. Companies are not going to write new next gen OSes that are crippled because they need to work on older processors. The reason Intel, AMD, Samsung and Apple push out newer faster processors is so we can do more with them - so that software companies can take advantage of that new speed to do more and fancier things.

Now if Apple FORCED people with 3G's to switch to iOS4.0 and it was slow then you would have a complaint - but the fact that you can stick with the older OS (Which was fine until 4.0 came out by the way) means there really is no complaint.

um.... thats a fail. 100 mhz on a limited resource system like this makes a big difference... it made some games playable on the touch that weren't on the 3g... also as stated before the touch has more available ram.. due to no text or phone apps... and also without them the processor would be used less... so it would make a difference.

Why upgrade when the phone works fine?
This is getting a little ridiculous. Apple forcing users to upgrade their hardware far too often.
How good is a device if it's well built and will last a few years but will NOT run newer software?
My contract is done with ATT. I'm still using iPhone 3G.
Might be going Droid X soon...
