All I need is audible support then I'm pretty set. Might be a while though considering Amazon's track record with supporting Apple devices.
If you can play it on your Mac or iPhone, you can play it on the HomePod. Just not controlled by Siri on the HomePod.

It is a headless Apple TV people! Nothing surprising here. It is an iOS device; therefore Airplay anything you want. And naturally it's going to include two native apps, Music and Podcasts along with Siri support.

Why was there such confusion about this all along?

I can play the following Apple Radio Music via a Siri request on my iMac so I don't know why it wouldn't work on HomePod as well. This article makes it sound like there's only one station.

Does anyone have an idea of how "Hey Siri" will differentiate devices when you have an iPhone, Apple Watch and HomePod in the same room? Won't all three devices respond?

That's odd, someone who was present at one of the demo sessions said the opposite.

Maybe he was biased or is just not an experienced audio reviewer? From a technical standpoint, the Max just doesn‘t have the capabilities to produce a wide soundstage. Also, most of the other hands-on reports claimed the opposite, i.e. the HomePod having the wider soundstage, which only makes sense because of its tweeter array and beamforming capabilities.

they say in settings you will be able to disable the other devices using siri when you have the homepod

Kinda sucks.....I spent Christmas break a few years ago ripping my CD collection (over 300) to my iTunes library which is on my NAS. I don't want to pay for an Apple Music or Match subscription, since I have my music where I want it and am happy with that. But the only way I can play it on a HomePod (or pair when it supports stereo) is via Airplay through a third device? Non-starter for me.

Siri is far too smart & sophisticated to be confused about such stuff. ;)

And this seems like a great question to ask Siri right now.

Jokes aside: I can't remember if someone at the demo wrote something up about this or if it was thread speculation. But I believe there was some message about this actually getting some attention by Apple to prevent most incarnations of confusion. I think it's based upon determining which device is closest to you and/or possibly the context of the request. I think I read that if your iPhone initially picks up but realizes the Siri request is for HP, it can communicate with the HP to pass along the request (and maybe vice-versa).

However, I don't recall if that's from the press or just hopeful thinking by fellow posters. At this point, there is a great blur in terms of what it actually can do and up to the miracles it can also do.

How do you know the (clear minority of) sites that posted critical remarks were not indeed the „biased“ ones? You shouldn‘t accuse the positive hands-on reports as being biased without any evidence and/or personal listening experience with a HomePod.
Perhaps 'biased' is a bit strong but I was referring to iMore which has a reputation for being one of the most fanatical Apple sites on the net.

Wait a minute, so when my friends come over with a non-Apple device they can't connect via Bluetooth? WTF????

Change friends. Now that you get me thinking, I only have one friend I'd invite to my house for a party who doesn't own an Apple phone. And that's only because his company provides him with a 7.

Is this on a Mac? If so, just use iTunes on the Mac to play to the HomePod via airplay.

Because Apple didn’t just come out and say so until today. Reading this thread there are people who thought it would stream Bluetooth formats, and there wasn’t anything definitive to say otherwise.

I've actually seen you post this a lot - this may not be entirely true, and even if it were you could just manually disable Hey Siri on all your other devices.

iOS devices that are close to each other have talked to each other when it comes to Hey Siri since iOS 10. Whichever device hears you the best is the one that is going to respond, the other devices ignore you. They will probably give HomePod more priority using this system as well.

Either way this isn't something you have to configure manually at all.

I'm kind of amazed to see so many people ask this question, with a lot of them acting like it's a "gotchya" for Apple - like they figured out a flaw in Apple's master plan, when this has been handled for over a year already.

Is this just going to be the same as using Siri to play music on the Apple TV?

My experience pressing the Siri button on my Apple TV to play music:
- Siri dictation fails about 25% of the time.
- I can't remember the exact name of the music sitting in my recent albums list without looking at it and clicking.
- Saying things like "play recent music/albums" "Play heavy rotation" "Play liked tracks" doesn't work.

Using Siri to play music can work; I can play a playlist easily if I remember the name, so I'd be able to play music but it would take a lot of getting used to- and I'm not sure I can be stuffed.

You can play Spotify via AirPlay!

Airplay workaround is lackluster IMO.

I have found Airplay to not be 100% reliable. Often times it has a tough time with video. Perhaps audio only may work ok. But for me ok is lame. If it is not full on 100% bullet proof, I would rather hard wire it...which, in this case seems to not be a option.

I am a bit confused. Is homepod just a speaker then. I thought it would control your lights just like homekit and be an alarm clock etc. Basically an Amazon replacement.

You are defending Apple so hard that you make ridiculous statements. Not only the distance between the tweeters is too small to be stereo but also the speaker does not even know where the listener is so how would it even know how to assigns channels to tweeters.

And the driver(s)? How many does the homepod have? None? Then woofer(s)? One? How do you do stereo with only one? I know 20 mm woofer can't possibly go so low that only mono is necessary.

For really good imaging, you have to have drivers (midrange speakers) driving separate channels of stereo. Period.

It has Siri built in, I'm not sure what you're confused about...
