As I said in the last arrive I do think the iMac Pro name will be back but in a different way. I’m guessing:

Base iMac: Powered by M1 with 24” and 27” 4K screen options. This would be a low cost option with affordable prices. Imagine a 24” for $999.

iMac Pro: Powered by M1-X with 24” and 27” 5K screen options. This would be higher cost and offer the multi core and graphics horsepower needed for more “Pro” task. Price would be higher and comparable to higher end MacBook Pro models but nothing astronomical like the original iMac Pro.

iMac Pro: Powered by the M1-Pro (or whatever it will be called), same chip as the new smaller Mac Pro. Available in 32” 6K screen size. For the ultimate user.

Odd that they would ditch it now that they can actually put some horsepower into it with their own processors. That said, the regular iMac with Apple Silicon would be hard to differentiate from this unless they crippled it, or reduced items like memory and storage in the Standard iMac to make the Pro look better.
maybe Intel has supply issues?
maybe they want to free up their own (Foxconn or whoever) assembly lines?
my guess it is/was a slow selling product for the past year and they want to create an "artificial" gap before the Apple Silicon iMac ...

The iMac Pro was primarily about additional thermal capacity over and above the normal iMac. Same shape, but different thermal design able to take a much higher power CPU and GPU. That quite simply will not be needed in the new Mx series of chips. The normal iMac has more than enough thermal headroom for anything Apple is likely to want to put in it.

This implies the new 2021 iMac will be so fast that the Intel chips will be left in the dust. Is Apple allowed to do this to Intel?
while I don't read that into this, apple can do whatever they want, contract with Intel is cancelled and has a transition period ...

Not surprising at all. With Apple Silicon, the new iMacs will be the size of a monitor of the same size, but even thinner. You will probably be able to hang them on a wall. No need for owning both a separate TV and computer.

Apple probably wants to minimize the amount of different chips they have to produce. It would make sense to reuse chips between different computer models as much as possible. Introducing several different types of higher-end desktops might end up less profitable due to yield issues and market unpredictability.

I'm sure sales never really took off. I never understood the iMac Pro and sounds like I'm not alone. Like many Apple products they had to reduce the CPU speed for fan/cooling reasons. I always felt it was unrealistically spec'd for wow-factor but not in touch with real-world use.

and what would YOU as an Apple customer want? more choices or less?
Apple has an amazingly managed supply chain, they will do what the customer wants, and they will want to increase their market share ...

That’s how Apple has worked for years now..
Doesn't mean selling 4+ year old hardware for the same price is fair to consumers.

I understand the fixed prices for the iOS devices, but those are usually updated every year, but some of the Macs have lingered for years without underlying architecture & technology upgrades, sometimes only getting a minor spec bump but basic price stays the same.

In a way, this Apple V Intel is like the movie Top Gun where Maverick (Tom Cruise) was the hot head who had a need for speed. But Val Kilmer was Iceman because he was ice cold and won in the end.

I want meaningful choice. I prefer them having a single high-powered desktop all-in-one rather than making two models where one is intentionally crippled.

Apple's modus operandi always was "we know what the customer wants better than the customer" — and they did quite well with it :) As to the market share... not so sure. Apple traditionally only serve the premium market, and they do quite well in there. Maybe they will be able to grab more of that, who knows. But they will never be competing with cheap Inspirons and Aspires that form the bulk of the PC market.

I’m not sure why the idea that a machine needs to be upgradable to be “pro” is still out there. IMHO, that’s 1990s thinking. I worked in a video house for nearly 15 years and none of our machines were upgraded internally after purchase. We added all sorts of connectivity (fiber to MAM and such) via thunderbolt, but the internals were comfortably speced when ordered. The cost savings we had in the iMac Pro were ridiculous over a Mac Pro.

That all said, the iMac Pro either needs to be updated or cancelled. It was an excellent machine when released, but it’s too outdated to purchase now.
Such 90’s thinking to want a new GPU every 3-4 years… Imagine being stuck with a 960 right now when the bottom end 3060 is like 5x faster. Better buy a whole new computer!

Lmao.

Sorry you work on old relics and have convinced yourself that’s ok.

So you say, the screen is worth at least 4000 U.S. dollars when you look at that (starting) price?
