I wonder if what really killed off the Mac Pro was Thunderbolt. Bus speeds have gotten so ridiculously fast with TB5 that internal cards are losing their edge (though having them internal made for fewer external peripherals).
This is what I was thinking. And add in the new RDMA capabilities and the studio even gives you more expansion for large tasks than something like a theoretical lone M* extreme mac pro could have at the same price

Thunderbolt + the Trashcan ( 6,1) - Apple pushed proprietary card makers to pivot to making thunderbolt boxes rather than PCIe cards - and they did. So there wasn't the same need for a Mac tower with lots of PCIe slots any more.

As for fast storage - external TB storage became a reasonable alternative to internal storage, and NAses and DAs became more common, so everything didn't need to be internal.

Apple has discontinued the Mac Pro and will soon be removing the machine from its website, reports 9to5Mac. Apple does not plan to design a new version of the Mac Pro, and no new model will be coming in the future.

Kind of not surprised either.

The Mac Pro was amazing during the intel era and it was decent and cheaper when the Apple silicon version came out.

But as soon as the Mac Studio 2nd gen came out the difference in performance compared to cost was negligible.

I think Apple have finally realised why drop a 6k computer that’s barely more powerful than its sister machine starting at 2k?

I think the writing was on the wall for the Mac Pro as soon as the studio gen 1 dropped but Apple felt obligated to allow the Mac Pro to transition to Apple Silicon and it was a good test to see if the ultra pro market (patent pending) is big enough to justify its existence.

And I guess now we have the answer.

Unless Apple start doing builds with multiple Mx ultra chips and a dedicated desktop Apple GPU or 2 options.

The Mac Pro is a pointless concept as a fully spec’d studio probs ticks most if not all of the boxes for a pro level Mac user.

TB5 is the first time I considered the Studio instead of the Mac Pro because of its speed.

For all the negative things said about it, mine just keeps chugging along and remains very useful. I phased out all my other Intel Macs over the last couple of years, but this one was just a sweet spot for specs and performance to warrant a reprieve.
I'm never ever getting rid of my 5,1. I'm keeping it as a teaching aid for kids to explain how computers work ( here's the RAM, here are the CPUs , here are the drives etc .)

That and because I have windows10 installed on one of the drives and I use it to play Red Dead Redemption 2.

Seriously though, it just has too much sentimental value for me. I ran a whole company on that machine. It's been a very loyal friend to me. Good times.

Can someone PLEASE fire Timmy and the Executive Team? They’re all too old, too rich, and too shortsighted. They fail to understand that you supply workstations, servers, wireless access points, printers, and monitors to get EVERY customer into the ecosystem, paying for monthly services, which is where the REAL money is.

Why did Bill Gates grasp this in 1980, but Timmy hasn’t figured it out almost half a century later? Some genius.
