They didnt have an equivalent to the studio yet (well, technically the 2013 was itself I guess, but not doable for Apple at a price point that made it work)I wonder why they even bothered after the trashcan?

This is what I was thinking. And add in the new RDMA capabilities and the studio even gives you more expansion for large tasks than something like a theoretical lone M* extreme mac pro could have at the same priceI wonder if what really killed off the Mac Pro was Thunderbolt. Bus speeds have gotten so ridiculously fast with TB5 that internal cards are losing their edge (though having them internal made for fewer external peripherals).
Thunderbolt + the Trashcan ( 6,1) - Apple pushed proprietary card makers to pivot to making thunderbolt boxes rather than PCIe cards - and they did. So there wasn't the same need for a Mac tower with lots of PCIe slots any more.I wonder if what really killed off the Mac Pro was Thunderbolt. Or adding ramWithout additional GPU options and ways of using multiples M soc chips I don't see how it's any different than a Studio. PCI slots?
Kind of not surprised either.
Apple has discontinued the Mac Pro and will soon be removing the machine from its website, reports 9to5Mac. Apple does not plan to design a new version of the Mac Pro, and no new model will be coming in the future.

Yeah Apple Silicon largely killed off any and all advantages the Mac Pro hadThe Mac Pro is a pointless concept as a fully spec’d studio probs ticks most if not all of the boxes for a pro level Mac user.
Professional music studios used a ton of them. ✌️I wonder why they even bothered after the trashcan?
TB5 is the first time I considered the Studio instead of the Mac Pro because of its speed.I wonder if what really killed off the Mac Pro was Thunderbolt. I'm never ever getting rid of my 5,1. I'm keeping it as a teaching aid for kids to explain how computers work ( here's the RAM, here are the CPUs , here are the drives etc .)For all the negative things said about it, mine just keeps chugging along and remains very useful. I phased out all my other Intel Macs over the last couple of years, but this one was just a sweet spot for specs and performance to warrant a reprieve.
They probably just ran out of inventory sooner than expected.Figured they were going to announce it at the same time as announcing the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studios, so timing is a bit odd.
You spoke it into reality and now somebody is going to end up doing that.Put dem wheels on your Mac studio 👍
But what am I going to use my $700 wheels for now?
