Can't imagine a worse scenario than Apple taking over essential controls of ones vehicle. CarPlay is fine as a media/Phone/apps interface but why would you not want to use the controls that come with the vehicle. I don't get it. The only reason I want CP in my BMW is so I can see Waze on the main screen.

Also, though, consumers decide what they want. That’s why so many newer cars with massive touch screens still have physical climate controls. Some of the arguments I’ve read here seem dumb. When I turn the knob for AC, where does the temperature actually display? Surely, I don’t have to look at the touchscreen or CarPlay widget (for very long) to read back the temperature I set on a physical dial. So many disingenuous takes…

I really don't see the need for a temperature setting readout. The advantage of a physical dial is I can set a temperature based on muscle memory; I know if I turn the dial all the way right or left and the a set distance about what temp I have set without looking at the dial. Minor tweeks based on too hot or cold can be similarly made. A far more functional UI than having to look at a touch screen and drag or tap to change the temperature.

Why are you guys touching your climate controls so often? My car has been set to 70 degrees for 6 years and is rarely ever touched.

Back in the day when I was dating multiple ladies I learned there is no one standard acceptable temperature other than "Too hot" or "Too cold."

Some people like the climate set different to other people, and in many families more than one person will drive a car. Also, Irish weather is schizo.

partially that and I mean, how often/far are you guys driving where you aren’t at a red light or stop sign and can’t adjust the temp? or just in traffic.

Climate should have one knob that your turn to set the desired temperature, and that you press to set the desired vents; and one button for windshield defrost. That's it.
It's like a microwave oven only needs two buttons, one for power and one for time; but manufacturers love to include more programmes than Apollo 11 had.

Aptera, the ultra efficient + solar powered ev with long range will be equipped with next CarPlay when first roadsters will be in hands of customers end 2024.

This is really good news. I feel more dashcam controls would be good, ability to configure recording options, view recordings, xfer recordings are all ridiculous in OEM systems. Sort of like the old phone voicemail systems.

Porsche is always mentioned with carplay and while they have done a lot like use their app to create custom widgets within carplay they make you pick carplay or everything else as a weird binary choice upfront. Things you lose if you pick carplay such as map routing or viewing and placing phone calls in the car HUD or driver display are always available in other cars like BMWs for years regardless of carplay use.

So while apple is improving carplay, there is so much BMW is able to do with the existing system that others have struggled with. I suggest Apple work with the sw teams in the Volkswagen group (or maybe its just porsche that would not surprise me at all) to get the most out of what is already there. These would be BIG improvements and make selection of carplay not sacrifice other car functionality.

You forgot buttons for rear window defrost, outside vs recirculating, fan strength, and dual or triple zone controls. My CX-50 has physical climate controls which I like but saying there should only be two or three buttons is silly.

The camera app cant be limited to the rear only; lots of cars have front and side cameras and also feature a 360deg view. One feature I wish my Mazda had is displaying the side camera feed when using my turn signals; would be great if CP2 could add that feature.

Rear Window defrost: OK, fairs.
Outside vs circulating should be automatic depending on location (tunnel) and pollution (sensor).
Dual/triple zone: fairs, one button per zone.

Outside/Recirc should be a button because there are situations where you might want manual controls. You can't rely on your car being smart enough to know you are in a tunnel, would like to defog the inside of your windshield, etc. Long before touchscreens replaced buttons, that functionality was a separate control.

not every car function needs to have a digital button to adjust it, in an car i've owned I can adjust the temp or quickly turn off the radio, or engage the defroster in an 1/8th of a second without taking my eyes off the road, have to look at a blinding screen and click through 4-5 button presses to turn the radio up is ridiculous

wow I didn't even think of screen failure, now you can't see your speed, what gear you are in, or adjust the temperature or radio or any settings if the giant 27" long screen is dead

You can already do that with a lot of vehicles.
Oh I know that. Probably should’ve mentioned that it would be redundant on many vehicles. Just like the climate features…

Unless all of these compatible cars are going to NOT have physical buttons for all of these things (which I doubt) then there’s a lot of redundancy here

While I agree with you, most cars which use touchscreens still kept their volume button, sometimes as the only physical control. And the ones which didn't still have volume controls on the steering wheel which you can use without looking.
