My decision to invest in a Mac Mini HTPC last year is still looking good. I know the cost drives a number of folks from this option but the fact is a real Mac is a lot more likely to get updates like this (kinda apples and oranges comparison I know). And then you still get a decent computer out of the deal. That and Plex is really nice :)

Wonder how it will do on Ebay.
I hope some 160GB models do appear on eBay at a low price. I'll buy another one or two to keep me going in case mine fails in a terminal way. However I doubt there will be that many existing owners wanting to swap for a new one, since in some areas it has less connectivity and functionality. They might buy a new one but perhaps keep the old one too.

No, but I do expect people to get their facts straight so we can have a fair discussion rather than making crap up like you do to make sure Apple fails within the conversation. More than twice so far you put out incorrect info which myself and others have had to correct you on. You refuse to acknowledge that. What benefit do you have being on this forum if you hate Apple so much? It doesn't make for a fair conversation if you're putting people on the defense. Again, get your facts straight and stop making stuff up.

Instead of baseless accusations, stick with pointing out which facts are not straight. We'll see whose facts are more straight :D

I am thinking going that route. Mini it's expensive but AppleTV is too underpowered.
if AppleTV had 1080p and external drive support it would be fantastic. But since that will not happen my next choice is MacMini.
Is it Plex easy to use? I just wondering since wife and kids need something simple to navigate.
Oh boy.

From the desk of Steve Jobs:

@CyberBob859

No.

[Ouch, pretty much saw that coming though, didn't we?]

Dear Steve,

How about an Apple TV Pro? Rent and purchase TV shows and movies, local hard drive storage with syncing back to iTunes, NetFlix and AirPlay support, and, oh yeah,

APPS!

I will gladly pay $199 for said device. Please keep the sexy aluminum casing too.

Peace to you and your loved ones,

CyberBob859

Sorry to feed your gadget lust, but yeah Plex is pretty slick and, at least in my case, is wife approved :D Check out some of the new features in Plex 9 (haven't upgraded yet, waiting for word that the bugs have been worked out):

I think perhaps 2 out of 10 people here know what 1080P really is.

1080P has double the pixels, 2 million versus 1 million in 720P, offering a more vivid and detailed picture (given the flat screen's quality/ability). It will look much better than 720p seen from 720p’s optimal distance and you will see detail like never before on a TV. Additionally, 1080P/Blu-Ray media offers better surround sound, 5.1 and/or 7.1 channels.

You gotta time it right, but the refurb store is your friend.

I guess but I don't think they will sell it under $600. Still quite a change. But what can we do?
For me the Mini biggest selling point is not having to transcode all my DVDs using Handbrake. That's a pain. Just rip and use the VideoTS folder is a great thing.

TRUE 1080P also has a bandwidth of 40-50MB/sec. YOU try streaming that much bandwidth.

Oh God. Company does something I don't like, label it "Corporate Greed".

OMG the new Apple TV is only $99...and people are complaining! You can even get it on Amazon.com with free shipping and no tax...

And it is A4 based and we all know the dev-team will jailbreak this sucker. Sure they are saying it does not run IOS...but what OS does it run?

Next year it will have 16 Gb of flash and run apps...and still only cost $99.

This is just the next step for the AppleTV.

At $99 everybody is gonna buy one now.

Not gonna happen till next year...and it will be 16 or 32 gb of flash...just for storing apps...everything else will be rented or streamed.

Currently, impossible. Until fiber optics become more commonplace and the average home user can get increased bandwidth, I'll stick to Blu-Ray media when watching action movies. For everything else, television shows (which broadcast in 720P any ways) and movies that don't benefit from 1080P HD I'll download. Until the technology can keep up with the idea's, two mediums will have to work for those who appreciate high quality entertainment.

Baseless accusations? I don't think so. Did you check the Apple online store before you recommended people to buy the old AppleTV at Mac mall, which is selling it for the same price as Apple does? NO. You just decided that Apple discontinued it.

Then you go on spouting off that ANY Intel processor from 5-8 years ago is much more powerful than the A4. What facts do you have to support this? If you don't, this FAILS.

Then the usual Apple hate comes in with your threats to get GoogleTV since you're unhappy that Apple is not fully supporting the upgrades that YOU want. You have no idea what Google is going to offer in terms of support, Google TV hasn't even hit the streets yet, but as long as you can have something here that puts people off, you will.

I think perhaps 2 out of 10 people here know what 1080P really is.

I volunteer to help the rest 8 of them.

1080p stands for "1080 progressive scan" where 1080 refers to vertical resolution (1080 pixels). With TV screens universally having 16:9 ratio, this also means 1920 pixels horizontal resolution.

Similarly, 720p refers to 1280×720 pictures rendered with progressive scan (i.e. each line on in the picture is rendered with each frame as opposed to, say, 1080i where the resolution is the same as 1080p but only half of the lines are refreshed with each frame).

Obviously 1080p means that the picture has 1920 * 1080 = 2,073,600 total pixels.

For 720p, the number is 1280 * 720 = 921,600 which means that 1080p offers 125% more pixels with obvious consequences to picture quality.

Question about the new AppleTV

If a HD Television does not have an HDMI port can you still use the HDMI to DVI Cable that Apple sells on their site. I know the DVI on my TV has to support HDCP.

Anybody have any idea or thoughts?

So please people don't go saying you can "stream 1080P" because you can't unless you're hardwired through ethernet.

Just proving Apple is becoming a bunch of tossers ...

If you can get a hack to play Netflix, why wouldn't Apple simply do an update to the older units to allow this feature. It is the one feature I was hoping for before I toss this unit out the F*ing window.
There are plenty of other options. Even though, they may not work fluidly with my MacPro ... at this point I don't give a crap. It's a matter of principle to NOT buy a new one!

Anyone who didn't see this coming needs to pay attention a little bit more.

Top 5 signs a gadget isn't going to be supported for long:

5. It's a limited purpose device
4. It doesn't have a well defined market
3. It's made by Apple
2. It's a gadget -- they all lose support eventually
1. CEO calls it a "hobby"

+2
This should be a sticky in every forum. Because it's Apple people expect support forever. It's getting to the point people want to buy one Apple product per category in their lifespan and expect Apple to support unto death.

If you're talking about Netflix. It's part of the new Apple TV. So I don't understand what you're trying to say.

I believe he's stating current AppleTV models may be hacked to use Netflix (as well as Hulu). Given they have HDD's, component out, the ability to rent AND purchase content, and stream from more than one system (and some hacks allow for streaming from an iDevice).

Basically, if you have a USB stick and 5-10 minutes, you can get your AppleTV to do pretty much what the new models does and then some (aside from iOS applications, but they may change as well).

So people have some choice. Grab a current model before they are sold out and hack it or get the upcoming model.
