Sure you can do that, but there are better machines out there for that purpose. I guess in 1 or 2 generation the new Macbook will be a killer.

Arguably. I spend my days between the photoshop and the code. 99.9% of the time even for me the rMB is more power than I will use TBQH.

I was reading Mossberg's review of the 2008 Air yesterday. The specifics are a little different, obviously, but it's really interesting that a lot of the themes are the same. The other thing about that, of course, is that depending on your point of view it took either the 2010 or 2012 versions (third or fifth generation) to really make the product hum.

The launch is looking like a complete ****-up, which may have other consequences.

I really hope so, if this trend continues soo we will be looking at atom cpus :)

The price will come down i the next 18 month, so no worries on that front. They will bring the price much closer in line with curr air pricing by the timr mba is discontinued.

There is not much reason to hold onto fairly stale models like the MBAs that should be phased out soon. Legacy tech like USB2 really need to gradually disappear from current systems, very few people really use them any more. I havent really needed to use a usb drive since dropbox became usable.

Something like TB is a specialist connector that should be used to connect things like SASS arrays for Mac pros, consumer peripherals dont really need anything like that. the lastest wifi and BT standards will do fine for all consumer peripherals. External displays are not generally used with ultra portables anyways, display ports might be useful for mbp, but the vast majority of them on Consumer systems are never touched.

Portable Laptops with legacy USB and external display connections should be rapidly EOLed given their dependence on tech from an era that has already passed us by.

I dont agree with any of the things you say to be honest. Not sure how you can assume all the things you say unless you work at apple and know the future? Air is really a nice laptop and by far a better laptop then the new model so why would apple discontinue it?
Also what is legacy usb exactly? USB2? USB3? These are by far the most used ports and i doubt they go anywhere anytime soon. While dropbox is great (i have premium account myself) you always need to have real connectors for HD, dvd burner and many other things. Hell i used a USB stick to update my heating machine in my house recently. Without ports i would never buy a laptop but thats me.

I got some time with my hands on one of these today. I have to say that as long as you think things through (is this screen big enough for me? will the CPU really do the video encoding I need to do?) it is very persuasive. No deal-breakers and it is "insanely" thin and light, much more so than I would have guessed comparing it to the 11" MBA on paper. Picking it up folded, it feels dramatically different than the 11" MBA (I have owned two, one very recently).

Sometimes you need an F350. Sometimes all you need is a Prius.

Sounds like you'll both love the 1.75lb Surface Pro 3 with an i7 released May 2014

I'd love that, if it wasn't the same price as the rMB and slightly heavier considering that its keyboard is another 200 grams (and if you're not going to get the keyboard, you might as well get a real tablet).

Very good Anandtech-Review of the new Macbook that sums it up pretty well:

Verdict:
Even with lower workloads the battery-life suffered a lot compared to the MBA. 8 hours vs. 12 hours. And 8 hours is really not that much if you want a no-compromise mobile laptop even for lighter use. I am not sure what Apple thought here, but this doesn't seem an OK compromise.

And while the MSRP of the base model is already at $1299, higher models are WAY too expensive for the little gain, which will also deplete your battery a lot faster.

For me personally, it feels like a kinda-downgrade (even though the WAY better display is 16:10 now, which i love). I am not satisfied with the end-result at all.

I think the key point is that you're getting an i7 in a lighter (or very slighly heavier) design, rather than this wimpy processor.

The fact that you get a touch screen also (i.e. extra capabilities) is only a negative on mac forum.

Anyway, what is obviously clear is that Apple will not get copious amounts my money this year because their products are either too ancient (MBA display) or too useless (rMB processor, MBA display), despite the very obvious way of getting nearly everyone's money --> rMBA.
