I honestly don't see a line of PC users waiting for this display. This is the most ridiculous thread ever. People complaining that it won't fully function with a PC?

You do know that many Mac users also own or use a windows system such as a work issued laptop? And that while they might buy this primarily for their MacbookPro or whatever, they might also wish to use it with their windows system?

But the point is that it *does* work with Windows, except for features that require software support that Windows lacks. What would you have Apple do differently, and how is this “planned obsolescence”?
It is planned obsolescence because in a year or two, Apple will use that A13 chip to ensure monitor no longer supports Mac devices requiring you to buy a new device. Or it will use its servers communication with A13 chip and make the monitor almost useless even for latest Macs. I’m confident the A13 chip is the bug they will use with time.
Why won’t Apple build a simple monitor?

It pisses someone off what Apple does. one buys a 2000 dollar device and after a couple of yrs, Apple slows it down that it becomes unusable. That’s why the A13 chip is there in that Studio display. There are better and more long lasting options in Windows.

That's just stupid when a standalone monitor won't work with 'everything' (within reason, of course). That just smells like planned obsolescence right out of the eco-friendly box.
You don’t know what planned obsolescence is then. This is just limited compatibility with third party devices. And why on earth would Apple bother with releasing PC-drivers for their screens?

Yes, that’s their masterplan. They will slow down the screen until it’s just 1Hz. ?

This chip is for driving the different internal components, and is plenty fast for what it’s supposed to do. And as it’s firmware upgradable it will remain compatible with whatever Apple comes up with.

My Original HomePods got more updates after they got cancelled than before. The Airport express got Airplay 2 years after it was phased out.

If there’s one company trying to keep devices around as long as possible, it’s Apple. They just got an extremely good marketing department making you to want to buy their latest toys.

I mean with supply chain limits couldn't they just make it Mac only and then unlock it with a firmware update? yes let windows users need a mac to unlock it :p

It has an A13 chip in it. The A13 could have taken care of such things so that it works the same in Windows.

It would be nice if this thing was just a monitor and not a 27” quasi iPad. Of course, that would take away all the bells and whistles from all its users, but at least then it might have been, say, a thousand dollars. Apple could have also saved a few bucks by not making all users pay the overheads of manufacturing the three separate main bodies required to facilitate their ridiculously bad design choice vis-à-vis stand-gate.

I get that great displays don’t come cheap, but this thing feels like they decided to make it as expensive as humanly possible. It should have been a monitor, not a hybrid computer. Feels like an odd product to me that also cuts its potential market in half by making its price unjustifiable to most Windows PC users. But then, Apple being Apple, they just price gouge everyone in order to make profit regardless. Kind of like a brute force approach to making money instead of intelligent design.

Plus, all that, and they couldn’t even be bothered to find a way to securely implement FaceID into it after telling us MacBook Pros don’t have it because the lid is too thin.

I’m curious to know why anyone would pick this over the cheaper New Dell (Alienware) QD-OLED : AW3423DW

Apart from design perhaps and accepting you need a separate camera and speakers

And it will function as a “normal” monitor with a webcam and speakers. It just won’t have a few bells and whistles available with macOS. That seems perfectly reasonable.

Higher resolution compatible with true macOS upscaling and the more advanced speakers and Center Stage camera.

And as long as their work PCs have Thunderbolt ports this monitor should be fine for their purposes. It will just lack a few bells and whistles available on the Mac.

I know some people like their displays as large as possible, (32", 40", etc.), but that comes at the cost of desk space and pixel density. From what I've seen of 4K/5K monitor prices, packing that many pixels into a smaller screen size always comes at a premium.

comes at a premium, yes. comes at the cost of sanity, absolutely not. this price point for a paltry feature set is apple tax to the maximum.

I am concerned that they decided to put an A13 Chip in the thing....ITS A MONITOR.
The new monitor has almost the same processing power as the iMac. A13 vs M1 (i.e. A14 with a couple more CPU cores and more graphics cores). In single-threaded performance the Studio Display probably beats the iMac 27”. It’s almost a shame one can’t use the Studio Display as a standalone computer, after all.

Probably the dumbest question, but would the Mac Studio display also work as a monitor for a console (PS5/Xbox)?

Let’s be honest, how many PC owners are gonna fork out $1500 plus for an Apple display?
I would. Just for the clean design, web cam, and speakers built in. I am so tired of monitor manufacturers putting their ugly ass logo on the front of monitors. I don't want to see Alienware, or LG, or anything on the front.

But, because this is limited to 60hz, only one input so I can't easily switch between my pc and mac, it's a no go.
