Nobody knows; that's exactly what was so bad about it. For me, Ping was a sidebar in iTunes that I could click on bands I liked. It was basically the 'Like' button in Facebook, without... the rest of Facebook. Unless I'm missing a *whole* lot, I fail to see how that even falls under the definition of 'social network'.

Yeah, I felt like Ping was just trying to sell me overpriced and low-quality iTunes songs, so I disabled it in Parental Controls. Thank goodness for paranoid parents who make those options necessary :)

I tried them all briefly. Had FB for some time untill the idiocy led me to delete it and never looked back. Only thing I regret is seeing the affiliated icons and links everywhere I look. Even inmy OS'. Shouldn't I have a choice to hide them?

Exactly. Twitter is a great tool. People here are just Trapped in a bubble.

Facebook has its nice purposes too for sharing photos/event invites etc, but Twitter has a lot of discussions and is great for news and searching.

still never understood the hype with twitter unless you're one of those people that think a celebrities life is more important than your own.
I get my feeds from MacRumors on Twitter and I guess I'm not alone. Just because you don't know how to use Twitter doesn't mean it's worthless.

Or you could just subscribe to them on Facebook and not have to check two sites. The difference is, on Facebook, you can actually get into meaningful conversations and not just have one way interaction.

Twitter is useful for public figures, corporations, bands, and the like who want to "blast" bits of information to as many people as possible (of course, they could just do this on Facebook as well - and not be subject to an arbitrary character limit). For the average person, however, I find Twitter to be next to useless.

I see this from the complete other direction. Twitter is a two way conversation where FB is a one way street. I have met people on twitter and am now great friends in real life, never happened on FB. Also, have had conversations with people I'd never have access to, if not for Twitter.

I wouldn't mind Apple buying a portion of the company. Twitter is already limiting its API, this could be a way for Apple to maintain a mutually beneficial partnership. However, I hope they don't buy the whole company, that would probably lead to the end of Twitter.

They have too much money without knowing what to do with it. And they are boring. Buy few super yachts, buy the Maldives or some other place in the Pacific and THEN socialize.

Agreed.
I just think the 140 character limit should be expanded to a bigger amount, but i like that there are limits.

Facebook is a great tool for keeping in touch with your friends and family.

Recent numbers show Facebook's usage is declining, and has reached a saturation point in North America and UK.
They boast over 900M users, but how many are duplicate accounts? The murdering porn star in Canada who was caught in Germany had over 70 accounts of his own, and i know other people who have several accounts.

Facebook won't disappear but it will probably become like Yahoo. I see niches like Twitter and LinkedIn living longer.

There are extensions that remove them from websites. Can't help you with. The OS though.

Since Apple has a large liquid amount of cash investments sitting around doing nothing, they can be buying other or part of companies which can help benefit them in the future. I think Tim Cook wants to have as many things as possible that can benefit them. They want to cover the whole spectrum of marketing and add as many hardware and software capabilities from different companies. Social networking isn't one of them.... yet ;)

Yeah and it is this doing nothing part that gets the shareholders a little worked up. That is why we like the dividend plan. Because instead of $100 billion burning a hole in their pocket, they can put some of that money in my pocket.

The main problem with a Twitter investment is that Twitter makes very little profit in comparison to that valuation. So Apple would be basically expanding into a company that is radically less profitable.

What is Twitter's business model? Seriously, I am not joking. I do not understand how Twitter makes money.

Twitter's business model is to sell "promoted" tweets with-in their service. These are seen by everyone with a twitter account and it fall directly into their news feed as well as their Local Trends (this varies). These promoted ads can be pushed through the traditional web browser and mobile versions. Really just a simple ad based revenue model.

I'm sure people felt the same way about MySpace at one point. Of course Facebook will ultimately die - just like Twitter and LinkedIn. These sites all have a limited shelf life.

Are these ads seen on the twitter app for iOS? I never see any ads. I am on twitter app version 3.5.1

They will not display as "ads" but rather promoted tweets in your feed the same way they do on a non-mobile browser/app. So even if you are not following the company or person the tweet comes through, like today I saw a Mitt Romney political tweet promoted on my feed. (I do not follow him)

I see, I never get any promoted tweets with the old version of this app (3.5.1). But now I at least know how they make money. I guess sometimes a upgrade is a downgrade.
