That's what people get for forcing Apple to invest heavily in AI before 2024. I can remember endless posts and articles saying that Apple needed to do AI right then!

Now they're doing it, and they are struggling to come up with meaningful use cases and just shoving it into every single feature in their OSes so they can sell iCloud+ for access to more requests (more juicy services revenues). Apple's AI has been a constant disappointment since its introduction, they couldn't deliver on their promises (the famous Bella Ramsey ad, "Personal Cloud Compute" being only on their own servers, etc.). That keynote, and I bet future keynotes as well, was all about useless AI stuff. The hardware is more and more becoming a background prop for their useless services, which will soon be all about subscriptions and ads.

Do not want more (or any) ads. I block them aggressively everywhere I can. AppleOne subscribers should not see adds anywhere, including Maps. Charge me a few bucks more for the privilege if necessary. My personal hub should not include ads.

I agree.
But I think what they'll do is charge everyone, and then charge you some more...

And everyone will get ADs.

I learned long ago that the financials on AD supported models VASTLY outpace what companies can charge consumers to avoid them.

i.e. The amount they'd have to charge people would be an amount most would balk at.

Put another way, our data and attention is REALLY valuable and we should not be letting companies profit off of it.

100% this.

Apple is a huge company. I wouldn't put too much blame on their AI spending. Apple has spent a lot less on AI than other companies like Alphabet/Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, etc. Also, Apple has been able to make decent money from the AI boom including commissions from AI app subscriptions in the App Store.

Besides, Apple has been using advertising as a revenue source for a while. There are simply more and more ways for Apple to put advertising in front of users today than there used to be.

John Ternus inherited the programs Tim Apple approved. We will have a hint of how the next Apple years will be under his leadership next year.
Inheriting Tim Cook approved things doesn't mean he has to continue with them.

Ternus killing the Vision Pro is evidence of this.

Incoming Apple CEO John Ternus also reportedly signed off on canceling both a second Vision Pro and a cheaper, slimmer "Vision Air"

This is fast becoming the biggest bait and switch in the history of global commerce. Apple charges a premium for premium hardware and services. In exchange, we are able to avoid slop and extraneous badgering and algorithms. Apple was the anti-Google, the anti-Microsoft. Now, Apple is injecting advertising everywhere it can get away with. Where next? Messages? Notes? In the past, this would be ridiculous. Today, I'm not so sure. I never, ever thought iWork would become freemium. Alas...

They are frog boiling all the customers.
Judging by how many defend every single one of these moves Apple makes, it appears to mostly be working for them.

They really seem to want to turn into Google, layered on top of their hardware business.

The JUICY AD revenue has "number go up" squad salivating.

But how else will Cupertino finance these mystical and magical launch 'event' videos and/or the continued development of emojis?

This is what Apple is devolving into. Ad-based subscription revenue service; it will simply also sell you the hardware to flood your face with ads all day. And the ads will get more aggressive as time goes on.
Training AIs is incredibly expensive and is an ongoing cost to stay current. You can either pay for it with ads or a subscription.
