ifoAppleStore reports that Apple is considering commercializing its new iPod touch-based EasyPay retail store checkout system. The move comes as the company, which had intended for the system to remain proprietary, has been "deluged" with inquiries from parties interested in adopting the technology.
Since the debut of the iPod POS, inquires have been coming from all directions, including from end-user small businesses, larger chains and system integrators. Until now, Apple's response has been that the iPod POS is a proprietary product, unavailable for sale.

But now, tipsters say, Apple retail executives have asked the retail store business specialists to collect contact information from anyone who inquires about the iPod touch system, apparently to create a database of potential customers if Apple decides to commercialize the product.
The EasyPay system is composed of an iPod touch running custom point-of-sale software housed within a hard plastic shell integrating the device with a barcode scanner and magnetic stripe reader, as well as a rechargeable battery to power the auxiliary hardware. Apple began rolling out the new devices to its retail stores earlier this month, replacing the previous Windows CE-based systems used by its employees.

i doubt this would happen. I do see them "giving" their siblings this system (disney and nike) to use in their own stores.

I think it would be great for some retailers. It is so fast and easy at an apple store compared to other places I shop.

They are already bringing it to one "sibling" already. The Disney Stores, they are doing a million dollar per store overhaul of their locations & one of the major overhauls for the store is this payment system.Steve Jobs and Apple have been working with Disney on this refurbishment of their stores. They even have a demo store in California to test out the new payment system as well as the other features of the store.

Apple should absolutely do this, fantastic move to build a user base for the device around an entire new function.

Maybe Apple is considering this because of this: http://squareup.com/.

Seems like Apple would want to get in on that.
It's a good looking product. The fact that the card swipe attaches to the mic jack has problems written all over. How long until that thing snaps, bends, or gets damaged by excessive use? I'm pretty sure someone could build them one that works with the dock connector, or even a bluetooth adaptor?

and I think that is a brilliant move. Disney "stuff" is loved by most children (and some adults) and up to now...buying disney "stuff" is quite an adventure if you even know where to look. The old disney stores were a nightmare. So new and improved disney stores would be great.

I can't believe restaurants don't have this kind of thing yet. Who hasn't wasted 20+ minutes getting our the door with large group trying to split the bill?

Restaurants need this

My wife works in the restaurant business and something like this would be perfect. The server could input the order right at the table and never have to walk back to the kitchen or even the terminal to relay it. It would be perfect.

With the SquareUp device it leaves the dock port open for a charger. What would be best is if it opened the audio-port for people with a visual disability. Keep it secure by not announcing the persons total bill payable. Or an extension to fit over the dock and audio port and allow have 2x audio port splitter for magnetic swiping and headphones while the dock port can be used for charging. :)

It all comes down to cost effectiveness, if the restaurant is busy then it might be of use if its only busy some of the time then its is more affordable to just have the waiter(ess) walk to the kitchen or back counter and pass on the order as well as pick. Restaurants already have wireless payment machines in the restaurants that I visit. So I do not see giving 10-20 waiter(ess)s each a machine when a few could that are presently held serves well enough. :)

All this needs to go one step further.... get rid of the card.

I want to be able to make a payment using MY iphone, like a "bump" or something like that. Then I can get rid of my wallet.

The sheer number of small retailers in this country is staggering. If a portion of them stopped using DOS and Win point of sale and barcode systems in favor of an iPod Touch based system, that would make Apple the primary vendor for small business IP and POS in very short order.

Once dominant in transaction processing and inventory control and asset management applications, the halo effect we saw with iPod to mac on the consumer side would be approximated in large unfragmented business segments.

The popularity of the iPod shocked Apple. The popularity of the point of sale device shocked Apple. This is a wideband business Trojan Horse.

Yeah I heard about that also. Sounds very promising.

Why does Apple use a stylus for signature and the Square uses your finger?!

Either one looks great. It would depend on cost but I would love to be able to whip that out to receive payment from my customers when I deliver their custom made goods.

Enterprise customers are beating down Apple’s door to make use of.... an iPod!

We live in strange times.

(And the iPod EasyPay system IS pretty cool... which I never thought I’d say about a cash register, portable or not!)

Apple has not taken advantage of all the external accessories that they could sell for the iPhone and iPodTouch like:

AN EXTERNAL Bluetooth or wired KEYBOARD !
