Another benefit vs. the Chromecast is that you can connect the ATVs to a receiver and get 5.1 surround. The Chromecast can deliver surround but it has to be through optical out on your TV. Right now only the higher end sets still have optical out since HDMI is superior to optical. HDMI carries the lossless DTS Master and Dolby True HD. Dolby Atmos as well for those who have a high-end receiver.

I know that sound bars are all the rage today but audiophiles will always want a good receiver and good independent speakers and subwoofers to get the best home theater experience possible.
Wrong fire tv also is dolby atmos ccapable to. I use it with my receiver.
So much misinformation here

I have iTunes Match and just want a way to play my music through my tv, so if this supports that and is cheap enough, it'll be perfect for my needs. The current Apple TV is overkill for me.

ABSOLUTELY! If anything drop the price of the older ATV4 to £99.
Leave the cheap crap to Amazon and Google.
That cheap crap does everything and more ATV does plus Alexa is a great addition. She finds programs movies and changes channel when I am too lazy to look. Also you can download an APK file and have Google and YouTube on it.

This is a mistake. The ATV 4 and ATV 4K are worth every penny. At first I was underwhelmed with my ATV 4 but I know use it more than my PS4. It is fast, consumes just 5W and I get my full internet bandwidth over 5 GHz ac. The quality of Netflix is superb on it.

A cheap dongle like the Chromecast doesn’t belong in Apple’s lineup. They should stick to making premium products. Leave budget to everyone else.

I would tend to agree with you, if it weren't for the HomePod. I think if they do release such a low-cost dongle, it would be complementary to the HomePod. Just speak and control your TV. No remote needed.

Or they could just release a proper hardware TV that looks stunning and is better than Sony etc.

I’ve also an lg OLED and don’t need my Apple TV any longer. Webos 4.0 from lg does the same and better. Apple TV doesn’t offer a thing so I removed it and put it up for sale.

I’m not interested in apple shows where nudity, violence isn’t allowed

Can you AirPlay to your LG TV?

Sounds like the net ATV will be a dongle, no more box. Sounds good to me. Don't expect a lower price.

Make no mistake ATV is a big dongle, just the best available. Conversely, all dongles are set top devices micronized to satisfy the people.

ATV should be replaced by an App - or maybe it already has been replaced.

Full Disclosure: I have an ATV4K and love it. If only it had a tuner!

Who cares about a cheaper Apple TV? These things are cheap already (even though not relatively). How about a cheaper mac? Apple just increased the price of entry when market share was to be gained. Moronic. Instead they focus on a TV most people will want to use to stream Netflix or Prime anyways. Makes no sense at all if this story is to be believed.

I just read at 9to5 mac that Mac market share dropped 24% down to 7.9% market share.

Sure, and than they will not update it for several years and keep the price unchanged as with their displays and it will become an embarrassment as better TVs get cheaper all the time... Bad idea. Apple has no tech that will stand out, when it comes to TV development.

I do wonder what you'd lose with this...presumably less (no?) storage for apps. But they'd have to allow for the obvious ones like Netflix, Amazon, etc.

It could be like the Apple TV 3rd generation and below, where apple just automatically put on specific apps

If it can stream offline content from my phone or Mac I’m all for it. The ATV is underutilized for what it could deliver.

Hence the name “rumors”
No need to point that out to me. I'm aware that MacRumors is about rumors. There are plenty of stories on here that are believable and others that are far-fetched, and I'm entitled to post my opinion as to which rumors I have faith in. Happy Thanksgiving. :)
