Can’t wait if this is true. Having Airplay on all of my TVs would be awesome, but the cost of Apple TV is prohibitive just for that single purpose, especially when their prices are much higher than US MSRP in many countries. A less expensive solution is what I want. I don’t need the services as many are not even available outside US, I just want a first party solution to mirror my Apple devices to my TV that won’t cost too much.

I'd actually buy one of these for each of my TVs if it allows airplay mirroring from my iPhone assuming it's not that much more expensive than a chromecast.

Of course, the "Low Cost" in the heading means Apple will never allow this to see the light of day, it would have to have a price tag of $699 for a streaming dongle (for the VGA version, DisplayPort/USB-C/HDMI will be $1999 each). 4k will come out 4 years later with Jony explaining how "only Apple" could bring us a 4k streaming dongle. The aTV will be silently discontinued so Apple can have the "courage" to boost sales of the awesome new practically magic dongle.

Same here. I'm guessing $99. All I need/want is AirPlay.

Wait,,,Can't iPhones screen mirror to any smart tv? Why would 1 need an ATV for that?

Nope, Apple has the courage to only allow screen mirroring to AppleTV. Otherwise why would anyone ever buy an AppleTV?

Chromecasting is pretty crappy.

Idk, I just thought screen mirroring was on every smartphone. My 950xl, LG v20 and S9+ does it and this is on a 9yr old Sony Bravia smart tv. Screen mirroring works like a charm and easy as pie to use on Android

Why is apple always in a defensive mode? Why didn't they flood the market with Apple TVs like Google did, and then launch their streaming service?

Why add a premium on top of it, and allow other companies to flood the market? Apple is an odd company in general.

Tbh, I think Roku flooded the market before anyone else.

I don't see this happening - even the ATV remote is $65+!

If it does happen, hope it integrates with the HomePod to make it universal.

Why does the ATV remote have the volume controls on the right side, opposite of almost all remotes to ever exist?

My Denon AVR 4300h has volume controls on the right.

I would much rather Apple made an actual Apple TV set. Or licensed the Apple TV SiP much like the Lightning MFi programme for other TV manufacture to integrate.

Or Airport TV / Apple TV with Router & Mesh Function. You have a small box you can stream and mesh your home network and place a TV Panel where ever you want. In your room, Kitchen etc. I am sure many Americans and Europeans home have more than one TV.

The dongle, should it exists, will likely be using the Apple S4, used in Apple Watch Series 4. May be with more memory and new W4 with 802.11ac support.

Too bad that Apple's idea of low cost will probably be $99 at least lol

That's a good joke. Basic accessories like a mouse and keyboard are at that price point, the pencil is even more. An actual "low cost" product is going to cost a lot more.

Sorry, I meant to say chromecast with Apple is pretty crappy. Overall, I think I agree with you. There is an endless list of things Apple sucks at on purpose because they'd rather screw over the customer to try and make a few extra bucks than have a good experience. One example is that android can easily cast to most smart TVs or a $30 adapter for unsupported TVs while Apple can only cast to an AppleTV. I use a mac mini as a home theatre PC and i can't even cast to that.

Look at Alexa/Google home. They each support thousands of devices, apple supports dozens of devices, so Apple is useless unless you're a diehard fan willing to buy from a very restricted list makes Apple extra profits. Even taking away the headphone jack is just screwing over customer flexibility because they hope to sell a few extra headsets.

Chrome cast is the most unreliable piece of crap I’ve ever seen. I’ll take the quality and reliability of AirPlay any day.

The Apple TV 3 was $69 when the Apple TV 4 was introduced. So there’s already some precedent here.

The difference between then and now?

Then: "Apple releases low-cost Apple TV Stick."

Now: "Apple considers releasing low-cost Apple TV."

This is a mistake. The ATV 4 and ATV 4K are worth every penny. At first I was underwhelmed with my ATV 4 but I know use it more than my PS4. It is fast, consumes just 5W and I get my full internet bandwidth over 5 GHz ac. The quality of Netflix is superb on it.

A cheap dongle like the Chromecast doesn’t belong in Apple’s lineup. They should stick to making premium products. Leave budget to everyone else.
I find it funny the way Apple has trained it's fans. Firstly why should Apple "should stick to making premium products" can't they just make products for everyone? Secondly why is the Chromecast "A cheap dongle"? that's just how much they cost. I've got a feeling it's inverse-snobbery that Apple fans tell themselves to justify high prices.

How will they compete with the cross platform streaming services? They really think people will buy new hardware just for their streaming service?
There were rumors that Eddy was heavily pushing for a cross-platform release of their TV app (on Android, Windows, SmartTVs etc).
Bold Prediction Time ...

That could be the very first product announced by the new CEO !

Tim Cook's days are numbered, & the AAPL Board is very-likely already interviewing candidates to replace him.

NOT Rocket Science !
I, for one, can‘t wait for our Eddy Cue to pick up the CEO mantle.

Me thinks the budget model will be priced at 99. And the new Apple TV at 199 and up.

This is the Dongle, which brings a Desktop to the iPad. Open "Desktop App" on iPad and you will see a 4K Desktop on the Monitor with Mousepointer control and every other iOS App is shown in a windowed version. Oh wait, my alarmclock is ringing...

Now: "Apple considers releasing low-cost Apple TV."

Well...yeah...

The first stems from Apple announcing the release of a product. A fact.

The second is someone’s conjecture or prediction about what Apple could/might do in the future. A rumor.

I understand and acknowledge there are people who are not able to understand what the difference is.

Roku boxes can pass DTS Master and Dolby True HD on to receivers via HDMI. A Chromecast might not be able to do that, but a Roku can. And you can get a much more capable device for the same price as a Chromecast. If you want to go up to the $100 level, you can get a USB port on the Roku and a headphone jack on the remote.
Paraphrasing jblagden's post:
Roku just Rocks!

Hm in Apple logic, what could they strip away? Ship without remote? Remove all ports? Allow no apps other than their streaming service?
