I'm convinced that's why they're buying the mini in the first place.

And they will buy the cheaper mini in even greater numbers at further expense of the full sized iPad, IMO. The low $200 range will bring in a category of buyers that Apple never had.

----------

The iPad Mini at its current prices is already the best selling Mini. This may accelerate those sales, but will change nothing in the overall trend vs. the full sized Mini

I know it's the best selling mini, they only have one mini.

With Apple pretty much silent for half the year, I'm not surprised.

Jony should be working, not going to brunch. :D

"use a more advanced process to produce the A5 processor"...

Why the hell wouldn't they already be doing this if they could?

Retina mini will go for $299 and the old mini for $199-229. That's how I see this going down. This leaves the iPod touch in a weird spot though. I could actually see it dying this year or next. The iPad mini can serve as the gateway drug at this point.
Apple could drop the iPod Touch down $50. That would get the entry iPod Touch under the psychologic $150 barrier. It may not necessary set sales on fire, but it'll definitely stabilize if not renew interest. A 6th gen A6 based 32GB iPod Touch at $249 would also be very distinct from a 1st gen A5 based 16GB iPad Mini at $229. It would also give them room on the top end to introduce a 128GB iPod Touch without the price seeming too extreme ($449 vs $499). A 128GB iPod Touch might also coincide with the iPod Classic finally being discontinued and the iPod Nano also sliding $50 to get under $100 might also temporarily stabilize interest in the pure mp3 player market.

I could see a 2013 lineup as:

$49 4GB iPod Shuffle
$99 16GB iPod Nano
$129 32GB iPod Nano
$149 16GB 5th gen iPod Touch (32nm A5/SGX543MP2/512MB)
$199 32GB 5th gen iPod Touch (32nm A5/SGX543MP2/512MB)
$249 32GB 6th gen iPod Touch (28nm A6/SGX543MP3/1GB)
$349 64GB 6th gen iPod Touch (28nm A6/SGX543MP3/1GB)
$449 128GB 6th gen iPod Touch (28nm A6/SGX543MP3/1GB)

$229 16GB 1st gen iPad Mini (32nm A5/SGX543MP2/512MB)
$329 16GB 2nd gen iPad Mini (28nm A6X/SGX554MP4/1GB)
$429 32GB 2nd gen iPad Mini (28nm A6X/SGX554MP4/1GB)
$529 64GB 2nd gen iPad Mini (28nm A6X/SGX554MP4/1GB)

$399 16GB 4th gen iPad (32nm A6X/SGX554MP4/1GB)
$499 32GB 5th gen iPad (28nm A7X/Rogue/2GB)
$599 64GB 5th gen iPad (28nm A7X/Rogue/2GB)
$699 128GB 5th gen iPad (28nm A7X/Rogue/2GB)

+$130 for cellular on iPad and iPad Mini

I don't think Apple will go that low. Here's my guess for the next round of iPads:

$289 for today's iPad mini (16GB WiFi)
$369 for a new retina display iPad mini (16GB WiFi)
$499 for a new iPad 5 (32GB WiFi)

The iPad 2 and iPad 4 will be discontinued. The new iPad 5 will hold the same price as the iPad 4 but bump up the base flash to 32GB.

The iPod classic, iPod touch (4th Generation), and iPod shuffle will all be discontinued. The iPod nano will drop to $99. Apple will replace the 32GB iPod touch with a 16GB model (perhaps with non-IPS display) for $249. The 64GB iPod touch will be $349, and a new 128GB iPod touch will be $449.

They would sell like hotcakes. Who cares about a lower level user experience? Lots and lots of kids and old people would buy them.

Apple is learning from the Walmart model, that low price sells. It's inevitable in this economy.

Sure the major metro areas like the bay area, LA, SF, NY, and others are flush with monied buyers, but in the outlying areas, plenty of people will buy if they are priced low.

The days of Apple being the highest grossing company are on the wane. The slap of reality is about to reach Cupertino.

I think they're going to cut all the non-Retina iPads by the end of the year. So they're going to have iPad Mini Retina, and then iPad 5 Retina.

I say this because the whole goal with the iPad is that they want to get as many of them into people's hands. The iPad Mini has really helped with that. It's at the right price point. Maybe you can't afford the full size iPad, but you're probably going to end up with the Mini, so it's a win-win situation for Apple.

They don't want to be at the same level when it comes to price-point with the competitors. They want customers to understand that you get what you paid for. It's not about the race to the bottom, it's about educating customers about the value of their money and how spending $199 gets you this kind of product, and the $329 another kind of product.

As for the iPod Touch, there is no way they're going to get rid of them before they do the iPods.

As I understand it, Kuo's major predictions about Apple products all came true last year, so he's someone worth listening to.

If the cheap iPhone rumors are true, then this rumor is plausible as well. (I realize that's sketchy reasoning.) Apple may feel compelled to produce this kind of product in today's world, where growth is mainly to be had in developing countries.

Oh please no....
Apple, if its customers you're after, it's not the price that's stale, it's the hardware/software.

This is not happening.

All Apple will do is sell the last gen model for $249.99 or a bit less, I doubt they will reduce by a full $100 considering their margins on the mini.

This is how their pipeline has always worked, they make the best and most advanced products and sell at a premium, then it will trickle down over time as new models get released and they need to clear older models.

I see the original iPad Mini at $259.

Still think the screen is too small, and the regular iPad too large.

Just picked up a Nook HD+ with a 9" screen on sale at B&N right now for $149....

Screen is just right for me. Still not as good as iOS.

If Apple is already complaining about low margins on the current Mini, they aren't going to drop it by $50.

Makes more sense to make a cheaper version and sell that at the lower price point. If the Mini proved anything, it proved the form factor and size was more important than specs. It's the best selling iPad despite having older technology.

I think 8 GB is a non-starter though. As anyone who has a kid with an 8 gig iPhone will tell you, that much space is gone in a blink of an eye.

Oh please no....

I can agree with this. While I do think the iPad mini is overpriced, it's not the price that's the issue. It's the under the hood stuff.

Android users don't use iOS because they simply don't like it. Improve on iOS, adjust the specs/price, then you might get switchers. Until then, you're just wasting your time.

Low cost iPad mini 2 with cheap parts. No rear camera, so I can scan in documents? That's already a deal breaker for me.

I've honestly never cared about the iPad. I have never supported that part of Apple. I've always thought that they should spend that money on making their computers better. I remember back when Apple was about computers and iPods instead of iPads and iWatches.

In other news, Mercedes is considering a compact econo sedan to compete with Kia and Rolex is considering a line of slap watches.

Actually the new CLA is pretty much exactly that. Its a compact front wheel drive car and the styling is also very Korean. Actually a more exaggerated version of Korean styling that is honestly really ugly.

Why not just drop the current mini price once the mini 2 comes out? I mean specs any lower than what are currently in the mini and it could end up bad. Plus how would updates work on hardware that essentially would be 3+ years old?

No rear camera = useless... and 8GB for an iPad? really??? This is completely crazy....

The iPad mini minor...?

Not sure an 8gb model is a good idea, as it will fill up very quickly. OS alone will eat up a lot of room.

I'm more interested in a 128gb iPad mini model. And a bit retina of you please.
