There is zero reason Apple needs to buy this. $1 billion? WTF. What a waste of money and time it would be

Apple already owns distribution rights to The Morning Show. If this production company has any great ideas, Apple can just license those
Read the article. They already give these people money for many shows and would anyway so it looks like their ideas are good enough for Apple. How can there be “zero reason”? They like that stuff, it’s a fact, so why shouldn’t they evaluate if directly controlling production could be better? Makes a lot of sense to me.

The problem with Apple TV+ is Apple's filters when it comes to producing original content or buying other producers content. It is too violent, there is too much profanity, there is a lot of nudity, it is not deserve enough, it is too racist, it could hurt the sensibility of this group of people, this character is too good to be white, etc etc. If you put so much filters and make changes in the script, so that the end result could be as neutral as possible, you end up having only boring sticomes or dramas series, that instead of attracting people, do exactly the opposite. Apple had YEARS to buy content and vastly expands its library so that the billions of potential viewers across hundreds of countries and cultures, can find something that's worth paying for this service. If Apple is so worried about its image and brand, they could have bought other existing streaming service with its own dedicated brand and invest in its, just like they did with Beats. Apple's strategy "we have less content but with better quality" is not working, first because "quality" is subjective, and what is interesting in the US, may not be interesting in Europe or Asia, and because "less content" is too little to satisfy a public so diverse. If Apple does not do anything soon, Apple TV+ may be shut down soon.

If it happens that’s great! news. I can see myself now keeping AppleTV+ for another year — but with one caveat: my free one year is extended another free year. 😀

1 billion freaking dollars for a production company with no proven track record with a single-digit number of active productions that don't ring the bell for the bast majority of the general public. Great deal...for Reese!

I understand what you’re saying and agree on content. They could buy a catalog and provide free rerun movies/shows as a compliment to offering their original content. But I don’t think Apple will do that. I think they’re going for building new AppleTV+ content mostly with shows that the critics circles are overjoyed with (many average users not so much).

But going anywhere? Not anytime soon. ATV+ has a staggeringly expensive mini series coming. It may be the most expensive ever for a 1 season only show. It’s likely minimum 200,000,000 and some suggest above 250,000,000. It will appeal to a wider user base.
It may air February-April. Be interesting to see if it puts ATV+ on the map outside critics circles.

TMS, LFE and BLL are all great.

I honestly can’t even keep up with all the ATV+ happenings, but there’s a lot of good news. They’ll never be Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ etc, but at least they have the money to invest in quality shows.

They don't want to be Netflix or any other streaming service. They want to produce shows that reflect the Apple image, quality over quantity and to entice consumers to purchase Apple hardware, and get involved in the Apple-verse.
Eventually the library will be significant, but only if it leads to more Apple hardware purchases. The product placement in all these shows is tantalizing. Even in Mythic Quest they are working with Apple hardware now, it's a gaming company...

The Apple TV app, on smart TV's is an odd duck, it's there for existing Apple customers to enjoy their free trials and eventually purchase the Apple TV hardware.

People complaining that Apple TV+ is not Netflix need to change their expectations on Apple TV and Apple TV+.

If they buy this company, it will be to protect their shows or foresee shows that can speak to a broad audience to purchase Apple hardware and they have complete control over it, so it will depend on the conditions of the purchase. Will the company be dissolved and integrated in Apple TV, can they purchase the assets, and distribution rights,...

You make it easier for me. If Apple is spending so much money, then they are incurring in more and more losses as paid subscribers are probably insufficient to cover this kind of expenditure, even with very optimistic YoY growth projections. Apple's pockets are deep, but no endlessly deep.

Apple doesn’t breakout ATV+ numbers. It’s all part of the Services sector with App Store AC+ Music etc.
The lone metric for ATV+ is estimated my market trend researchers. They estimate subscriptions but They don’t know how many are paid or freebie. How much is Apple losing or breaking even or profit is not known. I do know Apple doesn’t like money losers. Management has been consistent about cutting off losers. Doesn’t matter if they have 60billion net income and money to spare.. But I suspect Apple sees ATV+as a winner. You’ll see content continue to be created.

Personally I have not been a big fan of enough shows on ATV+. I opted not to renew. However I will renew for this big mini series coming. The two previous iterations of this mini series were done at hbo. Lowest cost was 2001 100,000,000, next in 2011 175,000,000. This is a big budget mini series. FYI, this is Apple’s first in house studio production. As such ATV+ is still in its infancy. They’ll bite the bullet on this one for a few years because they believe it will be revenue positive

So you think that Apple TV+ is marketing platform for Apple products? If this is the idea, then they should forget about charging people for watching their service. Apple TV app on my LG OLED works perfectly fine, and no additional hardware is required. I don't understand the point you are trying to make here. If you have a modern TV, Apple TV is actually not needed at all.

The fact that Apple doesnt provide the general public detailed breakdown of its revenue on service-by-service basis, doesn't man that Apple doesn't know how much it is earnings from paid subscribers and how much it is investing in keeping this service at float. Saying that Apple TV+ is in its infancy is not accurate, since Disney+ was also recently lunched but had tremendous success and attracted many viewers without offering year-wide free subscription. I guess time will tell.

No, I don’t see much marketing on ATV+ (that I watched)for Apple products. The productions haven’t even been Apple, they’ve been third party studios.
You’re mixing up AppleTV with AppleTV+.
Correct, with a smart tv you don’t need AppleTV box or any streaming box/stick/device (Roku, Google, Amazon). But it’s a better IME using a streaming box.
AppleTV+ is a streaming service. You don’t need an AppleTV box, just a viewing device such as a smart tv that can load the AppleTV+ app.

FYI, AppleTV+ is in its infancy because of how they’re proceeding. If they bought a robust catalog of movies and tv then it would be expected to see better estimated paying subs. But ATV+ is growing it’s own catalog through original content. That is going to take a while.

A very hard working women, she deserves a nice pay cheque if it's successful. But I fear her media companies image would be changed after.

Apple has no eye for content. As evident by its anemic viewership

I would have disagree. So far I've watched For All Mankind, and Ghost Writer which I enjoyed even though it's aimed at kids. I found them both to be very high quality.
Personally I place Apple TV and Amazon Prime as offering good quality and sometimes quirky content, and they are cheaper then Netflix or Disney Plus.

The morning show honestly really kinda sucked. It only got good recommendations because it was really the only thing on Apple TV when it came out.

Now if the morning show was about two competing morning shows battling it out. That could’ve been funny and interesting.

most of Apple TV’s content I have watched is mostly crap. The Servent I powered through and just nothing happened. Haven’t watched season 2 because season 1 was basically a cooking show with a baby.
Mythic Quest I feel like hasn’t found it’s feet. Season 1 was **** but season 2 I think tried to steer it in the right direction a bit more.

I have tried to watch a few more shows and can’t even get one episode in. I won’t be paying for Apple TV any time soon. But if I keep getting it for buying apple products then fine.
Personally, I enjoyed For All Mankind, if you haven't, maybe check it out. 😀

This isn't worth 1bn. If Apple is interested in purchasing content companies, they should've bought MGM studios and their giant catalogue for the $8bn Amazon paid.
Apple is pretty cheap for being one of the richest corps in the world.

Maybe they have things planned that we don't know about that Apple wants first rights. I for one watched about 15 minutes of The Morning Show and shut it off.

Apple TV+ is not doing well in paid subscribers. I spoke with a guy that is in the steaming service biz and he told me it is at the bottom. I thought I was the only one who did not like Apple's TV+ programming but it seems I have pretty common viewership tastes after all.:) AppleTV+ is big on liberal sided documentaries, no sports and campy fiction narrative that they view as entertaining. They now realize their content they are releasing has very little that people will paid for vs. Netflix, HBOMax, Disney Plus, Hulu, Discovery, etc... Just because they buy Apple hardware does not automatically mean they will watch what Apple has to offer and pay for it each month. I think a few will do that out of loyalty to Apple devices but many will go to what they like!

Haven't found any original show on ATV+ I like, not one. I have high hopes for the Foundation series but if they F this one up it would be over and out.

I just watched Happy on Netflix, so bad and so good at the same time. If Apple can't handle this kind of content it's game over, not if but when. The big future for streaming is anime and more than half of it is F up, needless to say, I'm a big fan.

The only reason Netflix is going big on anime is because it's cheap to produce and can be created as an easy cash-in on other existing franchises, lots of which are currently receiving anime spin-offs.

If that's "the big future for streaming" then heaven help us.

The guy you spoke to, unless he works for Apple, will have as much idea as any of us how Apple TV+ is doing; i.e., he's guessing.
