I only see it if it's just more a rebranding and redesign than taking the core values of iOS, First i said that some merging would be on time for OS11 but that's 4 Versions away, i don't know, i don't eat it yet

Are they going to sue (Verizon) FiOS whose had this (iOS in their name) for a few years now; dating as far back to 2006? lol

Hey, your dollars and cents goes to paying Cisco to use the "iOS" name, maybe we'll see an increase in Apple products to make the FiOS name go bye-bye.

Lame, I honestly have never liked the I in front of every thing Apple sells.. Mac OS X is fine the way it is..

It gives the wrong impression.

The "iOS" gives the impression of an 'OS Lite', but a Mac OSX is a full fledge OS. You're making it sound like you're crippling an OS when it's not.

Imagine if Microsoft called their next OS "Windows 8 Mobile". You'd think it was a flimsy mobile device OS. Same thing here.

It's really simple.

OSX will become Mac OS and the X will be dropped. We already know that the iOS is really just the GUI on top of OSX. The iOS is powered by OSX. Since all versions of OSX are 10.X.X, by dropping the X, it can become Mac OS version 11, etc.

The X is no longer needed.

And if any touchscreen Macs come out, the iOS interface will simple be an option (like for kiosks), not exclusive.

That is, unless the next version is Mac OS XX.

As anticipated - there goes the Macintosh and it's valued operating system.

They're only talking about changing the name of the server/desktop OS, not discontinuing it. Personally I think that the dual names are a good way to differentiate the two OS lines from a marketing perspective, like the Power__ vs. i__ prefixes used to. iOS and OS X have different uses, different user interfaces, etc. and are more fundamentally different than a PowerBook and iBook were. You don't want the consumer of 2011 to unbox his new iDevice running iOS-something only to discover that he can't install Photoshop or NeoOffice on it, or alternatively that he can't download and play Super Monkey Ball on it. That'd be like Microsoft's confusing clusterfsck of calling every OS they make "Windows", even when they're incompatable with each other. I think a single name would be a bad marketing move. But if Mac OS X 11.0 were instead called "iOS Pro 11.0" I wouldn't have a brain hemorrhage over it.

Of course they will. Imagine how much funds they are pumping into mobile technology compared to desktop technology.

Apple is deciding our future, and our future is an under-featured, air-tight OS with flashy animations and little room to grow without Apple's help.

Apple ain't deciding my future. I currently use Mac OS X because i like it, it's better than Windows and I like its workflow (as well as I like Ubuntu's workflow too); and I use iOS 4 on my iPhone 3GS because I have to... not because I want to... hence... I jailbreak it to improve that functionality that Apple thinks ain't good for me.

The day that Apple turns the mac computing platform into an ios-based (aka... your description...), I will stop using it. I don't want to be told what apps I am allowed to run neither I need to help a company increase its annual profit, if I want to code an app for myself, I will do it, and I will approve it and sell however I want if I consider selling it... but...

I am sorry, but this is the beginning of the end, even if Apple doesn't change the name, what's important here is that the idea is there... and I am sure is not an idea from yesterday...
Apple has (lately) focused its efforts on its iProducts... and that's a fact... the mac platform is updated regularly but it seems Apple doesn't care anymore...

(In general terms) iThingies for people who consume, Mac for people who produce. Apple are unlikely to cold-shoulder half their customer base; whatever branding they pursue.

Apple can stick with "version 10" as long as they like. After 10.9 comes 10.10, 10.11, etc. These aren't decimals; they're version numbers, which can go as high as the developer wants them to.

Well obviously Apple is going for simplicity...

Mac = OSx
Mobile = iOS

Problem solved...

I think Apple will have to go that way if for no other reason than that there are really not any interesting, cool cat names left for naming a bunch more OS X releases ...
iOS could allow Apple to expand into another animal family naming convention!
E.g.:
iOS 1 Grizzly
iOS 2 Koala
iOS 3 Brown
iOS 4 Polar
etc.

Admittedly not as cool as cats

instead, maybe:
iOS Black Widow
iOS Tarantula
then again, maybe not

Err... so couldn't Apple just call the iOS for mobile devices iOS mobile? How would that be any different?

Everyone complaining about the i needs to be directed here.

Honestly, I expected this. After Apple loses the X moniker it won't be that great for advertising. What would be next? Mac OS 11? Would that have point updates as well? It just gets real confusing.

It's just a rumor and I don't believe it's true.

It doesn't really make sense, iOS is a brand new name and if they wanted to unify they would have just renamed the mobile version to something like OSX mobile. The fact that they chose a completely different name than the desktop OS sure makes it seem like they want the two branded separately.

Smells that way to me too but am hoping it isn't true... :(

Saying all that you can't blame them either since vast majority of their profit is coming from iDevices :s

The fact is their mobile devices are their future.

As it stands now, everyone who uses an "idevice" like the iPhone and iPad will naturally gravitate over to the desktop line when in the Apple store to see what they are all about, and find an interface that isn't anything like what they are used to.

Eventually Apple will integrate touch screen capabilities into their iMac computers using iOS to give iPad and iPhone like functionality to their computers when consuming media, while also providing the ability to function as a powerful workstation when the need arises.

They will still maintain a "pro" line in my opinion, But it would be foolish for Apple not to try and align their computers more with their mobile devices as they have proven to be a HUGE success. This is only the beginning in my opinion. Mac OSX will be the foundation, but Apple's future rests squarely on the shoulders of their iOS devices.

Oh no, it's Windows Mobile all over again...

Has Apple forgotten the Mac? I can see Steve's one-liner reply now:

"No-one cares about Macs any more."

Problem is, it will be come confusing for the end customer. iOS is a fundamentally different beast to Mac OS. Giving them the same name would not make sense!

Right ive been using mac desktop and apple iPhone for 2 years now, and i think these 2 things though Operating system being the same, they should atleast keep the name away from each other...

Who knows one day Apple Laptops running the operating system namely iOS, the laptops would also be changed into names like iBook... wait a minute that aint right... did Apple just gone BACKWARD in the tech industry??

Please keep the confusion away...

People can clearly understand iOS are for portable devices developed like iPads and iPhones ... GOOD!!!

Now let MAC OS X run on MACbooks and MACpros...
Thank you very much apple!
Keep this concept or you're simply gona lose quite the amount of customers who know Little bout the IT stuff and whats going on and whos basically decided to trust in Apple... you dont want these people to be confused...

Gah. Ludicrous.

iOS meaning "iPod/iPad/iPhone" OS is fine.
Mac OS meaning that OS we run on our Mac's is fine.

Mac is Mac.

i-this-and-that is i-this-and-that

The iMac naming is an aberration w.r.t. that distinction and in and of itself already muddies the "branding" so if anything should change the name of the iMac should change. :p

Stuffing the Mac OS under the iOS moniker would just muddy the iOS "branding."

Frankly, I'm ALREADY getting very upset that Apple is too focused strictly on the iPod/iPad/iPhone side of things to such an extent that they have been WOEFULLY NEGLECTFUL of Mac and Mac OS.

We're WAY WAY overdue for a Mac Pro and Cinema Display updates, for example.
When are we going to see the removal of the monolithic kernel in Mac OS?
When are we going to see further refinements of Mac OS OpenCL features so that they are more intrinsic to every day uses -- such as when will Final Cut + Compressor actually take advantage of OpenCL?

Stuffing Mac OS in under iOS would be just one more indication that Apple is only focused on the higher volume hand-held market and no longer cares about the lower-volume full fledged notebook/desktop market, let alone the PRO market.

It would still have the 11.X updates, just like it has with System 7, then OS 8 & 9

I feel this is a move to bring more people to the Mac who are familiar with the iDevices and Windows but fear that OSX is a complicated OS used by professionals.

There is no reason they couldn't add the touch layer on top and allow it to be used via a new breed of iMacs, or a large iPad with laptop internals. It could even work with older machines either via the multitouch pad, magic mouse or that magic pad thing.

The future i'd like to see is one where all my Apple devices are used together. I want a 17" iPad that runs a multi touch OSX. I can then use a bluetooth keyboard or a smaller iPad as a keyboard with the small iPad keyboard tailored specifically to the app i'm using, so buttons for specific functions in Photoshop for example.

An iPhone as a touchpad, or a magic mouse. my iDevice apps could run happily on the Multitouch OSX as well just like they do now in the XCode simulator.

The whole lot could be synched over the air with a MacMini Server/MobileMe meaning each device had access to all my information depending on which combination I had with me. I could even then get a 30" touch screen imac and use the ipad/iphone input combo for when more screen real estate is needed.

The key to all this is figuring out a way to integrate touch controls with a traditional mouse which really is needed for more precise work. Oh and one mobile phone contract, as having more then one is just stupid.

1984 is here. The end of the Mac freedom and power. The limited and blocked and crippled iOS will take over. Time to move to a full OS like Windows 7?
