There wouldn't be a smartphone if it wasn't for Nokia. just fyi.

And there wouldn't be a lightbulb if it wasn't for Edison...

Look, some technology is inevitable. It's not the invention itself that's important but how, why and when it came to be that affects the future.

Before bashing Nokia, think of something that makes sense.

If you like Nokia so much, what are you doing here?

Nokia is a TERRIBLE company that has impudently mistreated, misguided and lied to their loyal fans for years! They are absolutely incompetent and can't make anything right. They were good when they were playing with others like themselves, but when the serious players who revolutionized the computer industry got into the game Nokia got DONE! They can't compete, simple as that, they have nowhere near the skills.

If the N8 released at the same time as the original iPhone, the iPhone would still have outsold the N8 and destroyed it, nowadays, it's not even a competition.

Nokia is a dinosaur.

While Apple was sitting back waiting for the right time, Nokia and others were supplying the world's billions of people with affordable phones... thus helping to fuel the growth of a global infrastructure that Apple would later depend on to make money.

One of Apple's greatest advantages was not having ten+ years' worth of legacy devices that they had to stay compatible with. However, their time will come for that:

For instance, we're already seeing the effects of sticking with the original one-button model, as that button gets overloaded with more and more functions. Apple has also somewhat limited their own UI growth by staking out the "simple and easy" market. Unless they start a "pro" branch, perhaps.

Funny Thread

This Thread is realy entertaining, thanks for that.

RIM is dead? Yeah with a growth of only 31% they must be almost bankrupt.

Nokia is about to die? Sure, being the number 1 in the fastest growing market (mainland china) sure helps a quick death...as much as still being the worlds largest supplier of smartphone...wait and dumbphones too...yeah, amazingly quick death scenario ;-)

Android about to loose market share? You betcha, an average growth of about 290% for the two main suppliers of this OS must be a real threat to the success...

Now, to sum this up, why are there so many people on this forum who only seem to enjoy the products they bought if this product sells more then others? Lets get real, Android is most likely going to be the Windows of the Smartphonemarket, but why does that threaten some guys around here so much? with a market growth of 80% and an individual growth of well above 110% Apple is doing great so why the hate for other systems?

Our company offers iPhones as well as Windows and Android based Phones by both HTC and Samsung to our employees...at no charge...anyone can pick the one they like...and guess what...the iPhone was approximately 50% a year ago, now they are about 35%, windows being now around 25% and android achieving 40%. While the total number of phones in our company is only around 500 i guess this is a pretty representative indication of the market for this year.

P.S. i'm the lucky tech guy who gets to test out all phones before they are approved for the company programm so i have one of each flavor sitting on my desk. and while I like my iPhone VERY much I also like my windows and android devices and actualy cant wait to play with the soon to arrive htc incredible s and the next samsung.

I guess all i am trying to say is that choice is good...after all, if all had the same good taste, everyone would be trying to date my wife ;-)

So the question is, will Japan will go back to mostly buying its own products now that Japanese Android handsets are proliferating.

To partially answer my own question, the latest news is that Android based smartphone sales in Japan jumped past iPhone in 2010:

Japan 2010 smartphone sales: 57% Android vs 38% iOS, compared with only 11% for Android in 2009.
