In other news, my friend's galaxy flip phone recently started developing screen issues after about two years (the screen would basically shut off after being folded, and necessitated a reboot to work again). It's a trend I am seeing around me (one switched back to a Galaxy S?? phone from a flip as well, while another had her galaxy fold phone fail right after returning from an overseas trip). In addition to quite a number of green lines on the OLED displays of older Samsung phones.

When you consider that Apple is actually moving towards making their iPhones more durable (premium materials and build quality, longer software support), I find it ironic that they are now being criticised for not doubling down on a smartphone design that is inherently fragile and costly to fix.

When debating the merits or otherwise of the current state of Apple, I'm always reminded of the closing quotes of Steve Jobs when he introduced the iPhone in 2007 (timestamped):

Why do people insist on entrenching themselves in the sadly outdated Steve Jobs era? Henry Ford was the greatest industrialist of his day, yet as his innovations were absorbed into the manufacturing industry Ford became just another auto company. And today the world is clogged with and polluted by the products of the invention of his assembly line. Let's hope we have better things to look forward to.

I'm good with a foldable that gives a size close to (but probably not AT the size) close to an iPad Mini. I don't know a Phone that turns into a iPad Pro/Air. Kudos to Samsung for trying it though...

The Vision Pro is even more innovative than the Triphone in my opinion.
Same idea (bigger screen, wherever you want it), same price, and somehow more practical.
And the Vision Pro isn’t even that practical to begin with, so I guess that should say a lot more about the Triphone.
There is no doubt that the AVP has tremendous potential, but it has no apps. That makes it useless. A tri-fold phone can use standard phone apps. While it might seems superfluous, it's more useful than an expensive entertainment device.

The iPad wasn't the first tablet.

The iPhone wasn't the first smartphone.

The Mac wasn't the first personal computer.

The iPod wasn't the first portable music player.

Let your competitors try the market and make all the mistakes first then enter it with a mature product and you shall win.

(unless it's mice apparently)

Not everyone cares about foldable. I could not care any less about them if I tried. They are so boring to me. We need to spend LESS time on our devices NOT MORE.

Apple is falling behind because they stopped genuine innovation and are now jumping on gimmick trains like the foldable trend.

Folds and Trifold is not an innovation. It’s a gimmick contraption that is DOA. Masses won’t be buying that origami device to use daily. It’s a tech demo for tech enthusiasts. Mark my words. Those things will be just a memory in few years.

Agreed on the foldable not being innovation. I view it as just standard evolution of what the Nintendo DS had before (and devices before that even). Just obviously screen technology improved and you don't have massive bezels/gaps between the screens etc.

I don't think Steve is the focus of the clip, it's the Gretzky quote about skating to where the puck is going, not where it has been... That is not a Jobsism it's a well regarded idiom/concept in business. Apple has historically been good at it getting out an ahead of the competition, not by being first, but by delivering a refined/elevated experience. I think Apple still tries to do this... we just live in an era that is flooded by a lot of noise/hype so it seems they are doing less.

If foldable devices were tapping some unmet consumer need, they wouldn't still be a niche product. For people that care about "cool," that's there for them. I think the majority of people want a good camera that happens to also be a phone, has a battery you can forget to charge overnight, wake up and still be able to get through your morning with, feels responsive/fast while being an absolute tank when it comes to durability and taking abuse. The iPhone 17 Pro is certainly not the coolest looking device, but I don't think there is better allrounder phone one the market. The innovation Apple puts into engineering new glass and metallurgy is really underrated, who else is doing that?

That said, I do fully believe the iPhone Air is Apple's rehearsal for a fold/flip iPhone that will ultimately be more solid and live up to those everyday expectations of function/durability than any product out now.

As much as I enjoy most Apple products I’ve owned over the years, recent missteps on Apples part have caused me to question the current state of affairs.

I no longer trust that Apple will create a better version of the folding iPhone.

The proof is how woefully behind my iPhone Air is compared to my Samsung Edge. Apple had every opportunity to build a thin iPhone that would compete and be even better, and they failed to do so.

My first hand experience with my Z Fold7 has been amazing and proved how wrong I was to be skeptical before buying this folding phone. After a few months this phone has proven highly useful and quite enjoyable.

That said I remain eager to see what Apple does, and if they build a compelling, well equipped iPhone Fold, I’m a buyer.

Every year they slide further and further behind
Sliding further away of what? No one cares about foldables. They're more nice than slim phones

a apple foldable is going to fail because of the apple tax like the AVP, not because ppl don't want a foldable.

Samsung could release an octafold tomorrow and still wouldn't make a difference.

Apple lead the market in cutting chargers from the box, single-handedly forced the EU to pass a Regulation to mandate USB-C utilization for all devices
Not sure where you get your information from. They fought a vicious campaign to KEEP Lightning for as long as possible that they ultimately lost, when the USB-C directive was coming in in Europe (it wasn't Apple that pushed it, it was a bunch of soft-left green groups in the EU parliament). I thought those green groups were 100% correct - instead of having the ususal 12 cables at the charging point in our homes (USB2-A, USB mini-weird-crimp, USB-mini-tiny, Lightning, USB-C, barrel connectors, Magsafe) we could just have one powerful, reliable connector - USB-C. A shift to standardising a powerful, extensible and flexible conenctor like USB-C was a genius move by the EU parliament, and it was absolutely abhorred at Apple. Who ever said that they forced the EU to do this? Please show me where you got this information.

The difference between that 2007 keynote and 2025, is that apple is skating to where the puck is, not where its going to be. The creative innovation at apple has been bleeding out. I'm not saying they're not innovating, but they've been lacking the vision that's needed. AI has caught them flatfooted and this isn't the first time under Cook's rule that apple is reacting instead of being proactive.

With the release of the Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold - the world now has two premium tri-folding phones (also Huawei’s Mate XTs Ultimate) and Apple has yet to release even it’s first bifold phone.

Tim Cool has prioritized Apple shareholder profits at the expense of innovation and it’s so sad. Apple used to be really cool - now, it’s arguably the bottom of the barrel of ‘premium’ brands.

Every year they slide further and further behind and I hate to see it because of how much I admired their products in the past. I don’t want to switch to a Samsung or other manufacturer’s device, but I also don’t want to keep supporting Apple, which clearly doesn’t care anymore and is merely a husk of it’s former self.

Every decision being made at 1 Cupertino starts with “will this increase our stock price?”
None of these 2 or 3 screen devices are going to be huge sellers. The cost of these devices will stop most people from buying them.

All you people responding to this with a lengthy response are amazing. Perhaps look up and consider the definition of 'sarcasm" before you do so next time...

Samsung has recently been copying apple in prices and removing features like SD card slot,I've moved to one plus, but for the s11 tablet brought back SD card slot. but too little, too late. good thing about Android, is competition.

<Yawn> Yet another post headlining that the extraordinarily successful [on an ongoing basis] large tech company that every other company in the world envies "Continues to Fall Behind." Seriously? There is no doubt a term for folks posting such silly headlines.
