Buttons are safer (and a mountain of research exists today so), I hope it doesn’t all go to screens. I’m not a fan of apples design language here either. It’s too reductive and not rich or descriptive enough. I want the car to have hallmarks of the manufacturer not look like a giant iPhone
Hate to break it to you but its gone this way already before any CarPlay enhanced stuff gets involved. Loads of new cars have gone to everything being done via screens etc with very few actual buttons.

Many interface elements can be customised to the car makers preferences. Also, some of the simplicity you're seeing here is as a result of the UI not being in car. I wouldn't judge too harshly until you have tested each version in each car.

While I think CarPlay is a net positive, I see its value increasing with the age of the vehicle. It’s a good way to still have access to certain internet-dependent features and entertainment even after the auto manufacturer drops support for the vehicle OS or the underlying connectivity standard is sunsetted (as we had with 3G a few years ago).

CarPlay is no substitute for my car’s UI and I see little value in even trying to duplicate all available car system controls and settings, in all permutations of manufacturers, models, trim levels and equipment, within CarPlay. Apple would do better to focus on the phone, messaging, entertainment, media, maps functionality and make that as smooth as possible.

I am 3 years into my Subaru and now have to pay a subscription to update the maps that rarely ever have updates anyway. My final update didn’t include the changes 6 months earlier in my area. At least a Google/Apple Maps are better than that. Plus with offline maps, you can use them anywhere.
“Subaru” that explains everything.

The very first time I used CarPlay all those years ago I was immediately disappointed and astonished that the Contacts app wasn't available. Now it's 2024 and it's still not available! Am I missing something basic - what's up with that?

Unfortunately Porsche is on the list.

Sometimes less is more and apparently Porsche has forgotten that with the looks of that rendering.

Imagine a $150,000+ sports car having the same arcade inspired dash/cabin as a $30,000 VW.

I think you need to remember that porsche makes sports cars and daily driver / SUVs / Sedans. While I have zero desire for these functions in my sports cars, I appreciate them in my daily drivers.

And I think you are misinformed if you think the interior of a Porsche and VW are at all similar.

Considering Porsche are just a specc'd up VW and are own by them in the exact same way Toyota own Lexus and Genesis are Hyundai.

Ha, right. Which VW is based on the 911 GT3 ? Or Cayman? The Taycan was a porsche product that Audi adopted. The Macan will use PPE chassis used by both VW/Audi and Porsche and was jointly engineered.

Unless you have actually driven these you really don't know what you're referring to. The difference between how a Porsche / VW product feels and drives is miles different than Lexus/Toyota. Not even in the same ballpark. This is even true of the Taycan / eTron. They drive, feel, completely different.

You are wrong! And BTW, Bentleys and Lamborghinis are really VWs, too since they are owned by VAG. 😁 JK.

People who enjoy driving and like to be in control of the vehicle understand why Porsche is different after the first time behind the wheel of one. Most people really don’t care enough about driving to know the difference. They are happy enough to have a way to get from point A to point B, and that’s fine. Nothing wrong with that. But asking them to acknowledge that there are differences between a vehicle that has been engineered and evolved with an unchanged set of priorities, including constant migration of advances from motorsport for over 50 years (Porsche 911) and pretty much anything else is probably a bridge too far in many instances.

Every vehicle which Porsche makes is a “sports car”. Not that I recommend a GTS 4 as a DD. Nor do I recommend a Cayenne running & gunning from light-to-light.

Speaking of the dashboard/instrumentation and based on the mockups from this article that is where it is headed.

Bean counters are heading the design department these days. Mass produced displays are far less expensive than individual mechanical and analog devices.

I honestly like the new generation CarPlay. Moved to a new city a year ago and planning to stay here for a few years, and I'm almost ready to get a car. Looking forward for new, more-affordable models that supports the new CarPlay.

Haven't most of the "committed" automakers since dropped or have announced plans to drop support for phone-based systems in favor of their own expensive, redundant, and almost certain to be junk, proprietary infotainment systems?
