TSMC is more dependent on Apple than other way around. If Apple isn’t a big part of TSMC, that probably means Apple has bigger problems than TSMC. I doubt Apple can have multiple foundry vendors given the complexity and differences between each vendor.I mostly agree... but another view of this is not so great: all (phone/iPad/Mac) eggs in ONE basket.
In a scenario where Apple loses first access to TSMC, what then (one realistic scenario)? There is no easy fallback option to quickly scale up production of equivalent chips.
I would be surprised if Apple doesn’t release a M4 Ultra, M4 max will be out for MBP anyways.Still waiting on a 3nm Ultra chip. Based on last week's rumors, I am guessing we get a 3nm M5 Max for the Studio and Mac Pro in 2025, but it is questionable if the Ultra still exists in their roadmap since they skipped at least one gen already. 2nm probably around M6 or so?
Oh crap...you beat me to it
Smallest current features are still like 14nm. The phrasing in use is just marketing.Bring on the Ångström era
I mean Tim Cook basically did that in the launch video for the M1 iPad Pro.The headline makes it sound like Jeff Williams put on Navy SEAL gear, landed on Taiwan in a secret submarine and broke into the TSMC factory to steal a metal suitcase full of 2nm chips.
yea, but, the processes between the various foundries are quite different, and your link is paywalled, but if the "China threat to Taiwan" ever becomes a real issue, we have much more to worry about than chips ...I mostly agree... but another view of this is not so great: all (phone/iPad/Mac) eggs in ONE basket.

they could, but we would pay the price, aka higher product prices ...We may see some one from tech/ p

I'm surprised Apple needs to head over to secure capacity. I mean, money talks, and Apple isn't exactly shy with their wallet when it comes to TSMC.
Not just Apple, when Nvidia moved from Samsung (3000 series GPU) to TSMC (4000 series GPU) for their dies, the cards power efficiency increased dramatically and the performance jump was one of the biggest generational jumps ever for them, at least when you look at high demanding task like raytracing workloads like in 3D rendering and games.Apple’s decision to move from Samsung to TSMC was a great decision. Apple pumped in billions in. Advances to TSMC and both companies got the rewards. Apple accounts for Quarter of TSMS revenue, good business to take care of largest customer.
Intel made a mistake when they refused to make SOC for Apple.Apple’s decision to move from Samsung to TSMC was a great decision. Apple pumped in billions in. 2nm is not just power, battery life improvements can be significant.Great, I was worried Siri wouldn't have the power it needs to give even more stupid answers and be completely useless.
MORE Power is not something iPhone or iPad need right now, iOS and iPadOS need major overhauls and improvements.
Apple will probably buy SOC manufactured in Arizona. If Apple (and pretty much any American company) were smart, they would read the last 20 years of news from the Taiwan Strait and invest in TSMC’s Arizona plant. The sooner that is up and running, the better for everyone outside of the People’s Republic.
Next Apple CEO?
Given the timeline of these things I have my doubts the iPhone 17 lineup (A19) will be built on N2. My guess is:The company's 2nm chips could first appear in 2025's iPhone 17 lineup.
I would be willing to bet this is more like a head of states summit where the meeting is mostly a formality with all of the details of agreements nailed down beforehand.I'm surprised Apple needs to head over to secure capacity. I mean, money talks, and Apple isn't exactly shy with their wallet when it comes to TSMC.
Well that would be silly. The headline makes it sound like Jeff Williams put on Navy SEAL gear, landed on Taiwan in a secret submarine and broke into the TSMC factory to steal a metal suitcase full of 2nm chips.
I prefer the Picometer, and remain in the metric system.Bring on the Ångström era
