So lets break this down.

4k resolution - whilst owning one would be cool, 99% of your content would be lower resolution, with an awful lot of it (mainly older films and tv shows) not even being full hd.

Siri - I cant see how this is really a killer feature for anything. It's voice control hooked into a search api. Nothing fancy really, and the only part that would be of any use on a TV is the voice control part...but even then will still be a lot more hassle than using a remote.

Integrated cable box so a lump of plastic to put cables in? Seriously?

HDMI & Thunderbolt/Lightning/USB
Thunderbolt would have no use on a TV. It's meant for high speed transfers and such. You wouldn't be doing that with a TV. The most you'd use it for is to plug in an external HDD, at which point you eliminate the point of having all this stuff built into the TV instead of as a set top box. Lightning would be pointless, but USB may be useful for some.

a la carte shows or channels controlled via iTunes If this happens, it isnt something that could be done quickly. I'm not talking months, I'm talking YEARS. The licensing restrictions around Tv shows and movies is insane, and theres no way Apple would be granted any sort of global channel license in a flash.

So at this point you're happy to pay $5k for what is essentially exactly the same as the current AppleTV, but with a fancy screen. $5k for a screen. That's the only part of your list that cant be implemented into the existing AppleTV.

I know 4K is what' being promoted, but there isn't any 4K content, it's all a bunch of BS right now. People still mostly watching 720p with Dolby Digital believe it or not.

It will be interesting to see if Apple really has something in mind that will totally change TV's like they have with MP3 players, phones and tablets.

Looking forward to being "wowed" once again.

Yes. If this ends up working out, it will be for a reason none of us have bought of yet.

Why would they need the cable companies permission? They would be a content provider, just like the cable and satellite companies are.

Because the cable companies have the licenses to provide the content. And the major content companies *like* the current arrangement, because it maximizes the revenue-extract from consumers. Apple isn't just fighting CableCos on this - it's fighting the content owners/producers.

I hope Apple "wins", it's better for consumers, but I'm having trouble seeing where they will get the leverage to make it happen.

It's funny when the analysts pull numbers out of thin air

I remember those stupid predictions of Apple being the first trillion-dollar company soon. Well, I sold my AAPL at 700 then watched it crash and burn, so it sucks for those fools.

----------

What is the point of this?? Just get a regular TV and an Apple TV. Knowing Apple, they'd probably think that coax, VGA, component, and composite are each too old to deserve a spot as an input

Yeah, I dont get why people are so hell bent on wanting 4K screens when the content doesnt even exist yet, and wont for years. No major studios are even using it on feature films.

----------

I have a Pioneer elite plasma and a 240 Hz Led TV.
Looking at projectors. Not interested in anymore tv's until 8K's are avaiable at decent prices.

You've got about a 10 year wait then. Why would you want 8K when there is no 8K content to watch?

480i and 240p mostly for me, 480p for the occasional DVD, and 1080p or 1080i for the occasional Apple TV movie.

"Could" not "will sell"

This is something, Apple's not even attempted at yet.... How can people see this may happen, when they have no idea either.?

I assume that 36% means "international users" :) See .... where smarter.

And... forget streaming 4k from the iTunes store. Your internet cables will be on fire. Not to mention the cable companies tweaking every dirty trick in their book to discourage you.

Comcast is still billing me every month a modem rent, whereas I own one myself for the past 5 years. Have to call them frequently to take the charge off.

One such call went to Mexico customer support and the lady said..

"Can you prove that the modem is yours? Because our systems say its ours"

I told her that I can prove.. not to comcast but in a court.

Then she says.."Okay we will be sending investigations officers to your house to prove that the modem is yours".

I said.."You send somebody without my knowledge knocking on my door and I will call the police"

She says.."Okay pay the monthly charge without the modem rent.."

Called US customer service next day and a nice lady says.."The modem is still in your account I am going to take it off for good and no we don't have any investigations officers that we send to people's home. Sorry about your frustration earlier with Mexican customer support".

Which makes me believe that outside the US the customer rep's are working based on commission. The more they bill the more money they make.

I was this close to cancelling the service.

Ever read a political poll? Its always a somewhat scientific cross section. A sampling. Check out Nate Silver. He's really great at it.

As scientific as can be. They are called stratified samples, a perfectly valid statistical technique if done professionally. But I guess I missed the part of the class where we learned that surveys are only valid if everyone in the country is asked the same question, and anything less is "thin air."

Pioneer Kuro plasma's have been rated the best in the world. Its a shame they have offloaded their business to Panasonic which incidentally is making some great plasma's now. The LCD killed the Plasma with its bad rep of heat and screen retention. All those problems are solved and Plasma's are so thin and have the best picture quality next to CRT's. But the LED/LCD crowd has drowned the Plasma.

Apple could wrap a dog turd in brushed aluminum and slap an :apple: on it and it would sell.

If they make an 'iTV', it will sell like hotcakes, no big surprise there.

I always loathe comments like this. Of course the head of the house is a man. Of course his wife is a bitch that kills all fun and joy in the world. Universal truths, right?

No, the wife is practical and level headed about spending. Men don't clip supermarket coupons.

Unless Apple offers something unusual in the market like an affordable 4K display, I don't see how Apple would undercut its competitions especially those guys from Korea. And even though brands like Sony & Panasonic are not red hot anymore, significant number of folks still regard them as desirable. The streaming movie service and the quality of the display have to be exceptional in order for Apple to compete.

The revolutionary apple tv will sell 100 million in 10 minutes and best buy will stop selling other tv's because the apple tv is so amazing, it makes other tv's sad.

I generally review the features and benefits of actualized products before deciding if I want to purchase something, and then I don't publish my decision. I either buy it or I don't buy it. The reasons for my decisions are personal and mine alone so they don't need to share them with the masses.

Okay? I generally speculate as to why or why not I would want a product when I'm on a rumors site that features just that, rumors. What do you expect, no one to express their opinions? As it stands, I see no reason for said product. Yes, that may change over time as more details get released. Or maybe it won't. It's speculation, and with the "facts" I have now, I don't understand why I would want it.

This is what i want apple to do:

1. make it beautiful. most flat screens are unattractive, with the exception of samsung's thin edge to edge tv. it's interesting that brian williams mentioned it.

I agree that Samsung's edge to edge screen is attractive. Apple can't improve much on this aspect.

2. no cables except for a power cord.

Then how will the programs or even on-the-air HDTV to reach the TV? There will be at least an antenna socket and several HDMI ports - you surely won't get VGA / Component input, they are "legacy" ports.

3. a full blown cable provider, with ala cart service. i get to watch any old tv show, and new programs become available when they air. I need to stream live content. this subscription can cost me a little more than a cable bill, thats fine.

It's hard to do so but very welcomed.

4. full integration with icloud.

granted.

5. facetime, email, youtube, notes, calander, and other apps, etc.

-facetime alone will sell millions of tv's, to families with distant relatives, hip corporations (designers, architects, music/video people, rich exes). Remember that video conferencing has been possible for a long time, but it hasn't been easy to set up, and the hardware hasn't been ubiquitous enough. i find i'm doing it more and more on my phone. i do think it has a major place in the future. Tim Cook's Jetson's vision.

BUT you can be sure it will work only with Apple devices, as opposed to SJ that Facetime would be an open standard - as of now it's not open yet.

6. intuitive os. it can suggest shows i might like, and a great tv schedule that is easy to navigate.

7. i don't care about siri, unless it works flawlessly. otherwise it's awkward, frustrating, and it open's apple up to public criticism. s also don't need any gesturing.

8. a touch remote with a fingerprint sensor (or face recognition), so it knows who i am, and i don't have to log in to my account / setting / apps etc. interesting that apple recently bought a fingerprint sensor company.

9. a fast enough processor and enough memory in the tv to hold several accounts for all the members of a typical family.

maybe Apple will start charging you $200 for "memory upgrade" :D

10. something that i didn't know i can't live without.

This would be the most incredible product. It seems nearly impossible, but so did the iphone. Perhaps they should sell both a tv, and a set-top box.

The cost will be the price of a nice tv + the price of a mac mini. So $3000.

Apple could offset this with profits from content. But they love they're hardware profits. So my guess is $2800 for a 50" tv. And maybe just $700 for a box that you can connect to any tv.

The last major hurdle will be internet speeds, not sure how they'll solve that. Google is working on it in Kentucky with a fiber optic build out.

When will all this happen? I would bet its 5 years out. But Tim is already dropping hints, so who knows.

In addition to the above, Apple must also address the global market in which people in different countries have very different methods (cable, on-the-air, etc.) to view TV programs.

They don't even know what it's going to be like, but they're "extremely interested" in buying one, because it's Apple branded.

This, my friends, is the power of Apple's marketing.

LOL

An Apple television... meh...

A more advanced Apple TV (the box), yes!

Yes - a box with HDMI/DisplayPort (real)/DVI-D/VGA outputs, and HDMI, GbE and IR inputs. (And maybe WiFi for those who still haven't learned how badly WiFi sucks.) Give it at least four HDMI inputs though, six would be better.

Apple won't "take over" the market with killer apps in 2 or 3 different sized flat panel TVs. The panel/projector is a dumb commodity, and Apple just isn't into providing a wide variety of options.

But a smart box with universal inputs and outputs - hmmmm.

ps: and let each HDMI input be set to bitstream pasthrough....

And when Apple exceeds ALL expectations and sells these things like hot cakes everyone in here will be the "one" who predicted it "years ago!"

If Apple does indeed bring out an actual TV... innovating the genre in the same manner that they did with the iPhone and iPod... it will be a tech revolution in the making.

And all the naysayers will be hopping on the bandwagon again.

Very cyclical around these parts. Definitely noticing a pattern.
