How would an Android user check the EMEI? This is half-baked.
If a phone is locked, a quick physical inspection will see it never advances beyond the activation screen. People are still selling locked phones for parts, sort of like chopping stolen cars.

besides the activation lock status, it should also include the status if the serial number is already attached to an advanced RMA. remember that guy in the Macbook thread who said he bought it from craiglist and took it into the Apple store. it was sent off for repair and Apple said this serial number was from an advanced RMA and now that the laptop is returned and processed they will not be sending it back. the seller had received a replacement macbook and instead of sending the broken one back he flipped it on craigslist in hopes the buyer would take it into apple and send it off to be repaired.

apparently it's a scam that gets repeated over and over again so perhaps they should include "RMA status" in that as well

Good idea. I always wondered if people sold iPhones and screwed people by locking them.

There is no way! If the phone is not locked, go to icloud and uncheck 'find my phone'. If it is locked, activation screen will not advance. Although if it is on iOS 7.0, there is a way to defeat it. So update, people!

Very nice. Should have been done sooner, in my opinion.

Excellent idea. Send that suggestion to Apple.

Can't wait to check who is using my stolen ipad!!
Apple last year said they could not give out who was using it without a court order. Didn't care about the iPad being stolen, just the 10k of camera equipment that went with it...

what kind of info will it tell you?

did you ever use find my iPad feature to locate it? did you erase it?

This makes no sense to me. What true value does this tool provide? Couldn't a phone get locked in between the time I check the status of it and the time I receive the phone from the seller?

Edge case

Yeah but what about the edge case of a terminated, disgruntled employee who refuses to cooperate?

I have gotten stuck with this a couple of times in the past year. Got an $1k brick sitting next to me now because of this.

There is no way to prevent a user from putting their ID on a device from a corporate perspective and this has made us pause our deployment of iPads across the board to all field employees.

Really. Why?
It would seem this simple check is about all you would need.

Perhaps I'm missing something else...

I find buying the phones new much easier. Just had to wait up hitting refresh every night for four or five days between the hours of 10:00pm - 1:00am waiting for inventory stock to update, so i could reserve one for in store pickup. Piece of cake!

To Apple engineers who worked on this page

this is a good start but to be great you need to do the following:

Give more information about the product:

  • Warranty status and when it expires
Locked to a carrier or not
Apple care or care plus and when it expires
    Advanced Rma
    Refurb
    Recalls
Any other information that can be useful If you are buying a used device,
Oh and make it available for all products: Macs, MacBooks, iPhones, iPads, watches and any products of beats.
And for God sake make it accessible by any browser as the only logical way to use it is when purchasing any product person to person.

Finally something that is obviously part of the greatest product pipeline in 25 years. I was wondering when we'd start to see these fantastic products...

eBay once made me refund someone because they complained a Kindle case I sold them was black instead of blue. The title of the listing began with the words "black Kindle case" and there were numerous photos of it very clearly not being blue. Didn't help me a bit.

My wife has been doing eBay since their beginning! I have seen your exact situation way to many times! My wife's descriptions and photos go beyond what's needed for common sense! But I've still seen eBay rule for the buyer!

Did they ever resolve the issue with defectors to Android unable to receive text messages to their new Android phones? They need to make a tool to check that, quite honestly.

It would be nice that if Apple allows us access this site using iOS Safari. Tried on iPhone, but would not work on iOS Safari

I tried using the iOS 8 request desktop site and it kind of worked. The screen just wouldnt scroll over to select find my iphone

You can restrict this in the Apple Configurator, I believe.

this is because for years eBay typically sided with sellers 90% of the time. then there was an about face and now it's almost impossible to actually do steady business on eBay unless you are a power seller who sells tens of thousands of items a year and can afford to take a few hits.

eBay now is notorious for just issuing refunds for "item not as described" claims, especially by those one-and-done international accounts. instead of cracking down on them, they make it easier for these scammers to infiltrate further by sneakily making their stupid global shipping program as default for international shipping without sellers even realizing it. the wise ones have wised up, so to speak and now refuse to even sell internationally.

not only that, but Pitney Bowes has been caught with their pants down on numerous occasions committing mail fraud at all levels. first, they assume the role of relayer AND customs. they open your packages supposedly to "verify" contents. actually what it turns out they are doing is altering packaging to make it more advantageous for them to ship it (in other words, reduce shipping costs). this includes reducing padding and re-using USPS Priority Mail boxes which is against the law. second, they are charging absurd customs fees based on the value of the item but they aren't consistently purchasing adequate shipping insurance to cover the declare value (again, to increase profits).

it's gotten so bad that i too will not sell anything internationally and i will not sell to anyone who doesn't have an established rating. this usually involves me babysitting my auctions and deleting bids...including hitting F5 repeatedly during the last 30 seconds of my auctions and deleting all of the (0) and (1) fake bidders who are trying to nuke your auctions by driving the price up to an inflated amount and then not paying - all so their item sells properly

How does this prevent the seller from reporting the phone as stolen after sale and the carrier blocking the IMEI though? IF you can't prevent that, iphone sales are pointless...
