It is a highly useful option for people who can take advantage of most of the apps, but it isn't going to make as much sense for those who just need one or two.
I imagine all but guaranteed to eventually no longer offer stand alone purchases, subscription is almost certainly the future. But imagine they will want to build up it's value proposition a bit more over a few years including a Lightroom competitor (Photomator) and additional unique features to the apps, before pulling the rug on the one time purchases.

Curious what will happen if I use Pixelmator (purchase) and subscription what will happen if I use features in the sub then open the file in the paid.

I can't seem to find a summary of what AI features are being offered with the Creator Studio subscription. Anyone have a rundown?

Suddenly all the AI capabilities of the M silicon ain’t needed because Apple executives thought that they couldn’t get enough revenue with perpetual ownership so they went to the Cloud AI Subscription model. So seems like the whole Apple Intelligence only works in iPhone 15 and later was another joke from Tim Cook (I have no confirmation of what I am saying but if Apple is going with Google AI, is going to be process in Google’s servers) we can assume that this Creator Thing , that you shouldn’t be using in Patreon because you shall end up paying way more than the $12.99, is not going to be processed in local and “stay on your devices”.

I think it's a great package and a clever move by Apple to shift more kit, especially more higher end (more GPUs) kit.
Now the premium Apple apps for iPad are only $12.99 away from trying out and finding out why your iPad needs more CPU/GPU and memory. It's probably a bigger win for iPad than the Macs making it more relevant.

There was a lot of panic around the iWorks threesome being paid for now but if that's not the case, as Dan seemed to have implied, and it's just for the premium content and AI in Numbers, Pages etc then everyone should be happy with this.

What a bargain for students though. More clever marketing, get them tied in and loving the platform and software while they are young.

Look at every other subscription fee that Apple has imposed. They have double tripled, generally exploded.
The Apple Music family plan appears to have gone up $2/month in the past 10 years; from $14.99 in 2016 to $16.99 today. This doesn't seem like an "explosion." Nor do I feel that the fee has been imposed upon me. I want a service, Apple provides it, and I pay what seems like cheap money for it. (Though I also remember scraping together fifteen bucks for a CD. Maybe perspective comes into play.)

The increase to $16.99 happened way back in 2022. Nothing changed today.

I would love to see a Final Cut for the iPhone. I use Edits and CapCut currently but would rather be using an Apple app.
No, Apple One, as the name suggests is a subscription that includes everything. Adding these apps would necessitate a name that conveys that they’re giving us more than everything, e.g. Apple One + Pro Max etc

Decided to be nosy, installed the new versions of Numbers and Pages, they installed alongside the old ones. If you open the old versions it will say do you want to open the new versions and erase the old ones.
The new ones seemed a bit quicker, they did not really push the Ai stuff or subscription, unless I clicked on something that required it.
i only tried them for around 5 minutes each, not really much different. I chucked them in the bin now, will keep to the older versions, but I thought I would be nosy. I did copy the old versions onto an external drive just in case.

I am in the U.K, so available here

Seen this coming years ago and have moved off almost all Apple Apps. Apple software quality and nanny functionality are not for me. If Apple is going to charge, then they better be ready to provide functionality that works in corner cases and software quality that is not losing my photos and album covers every time I update.

In the end I expect these Apps to be treated like MacDraw. Which means that at some point in the future Apple will just decide to abandon them.

To be honest, considering I was paying something like £10 (might have been £12, can't remember) a month just for Lightroom on the iPhone a couple of years ago, this deal seems pretty good to me.

It’s amazing how much has Apple stagnated it’s own applications in order to pursue more sales from the competitors in the App Store so they can achieve more revenue from subscription models. Mail, Calendar, Notes … there are almost 6 apps of each way better in the App Store, of course most have subscription model.

And they also save money in the development department, what I don’t get is how they have save huge money in lot of apps and still the Core OS is buggy as hell.

The steady stream of income argument kind of falls flat on its face when you are talking about a trillion dollar company like Apple.

In general I am utterly against the concept of subscription software, but there are exceptions. I don't mind subscription licensing when it includes a fallback perpetual license. But what subscription software has also personally done for me is show me how great some of the free and open source alternatives are. I used to be a fully paid up Parallels user, worked my way through several expensive licenses with them until they switched to subscription. Actually, come to think of it, considering what I was paying for the new license each year, the subscription model would have been cheaper, but I hate the idea of being tied to making continual payments, then I found Virtual Box and now I mostly use UTM and wouldn't go back to Parallels even if they did offer a perpetual license on the pro version.

I had the same moment with Adobe, spent a very large amount of money on Acrobat Pro, then they went to subscription. Had a long conversation on the phone to one of their representatives saying I was happy to drop many hundreds of dollars on another perpetual license but it would seem it was subscription or nothing, so I now use free alternatives and found that they are actually pretty good.

Hopefully Apple continues to offer perpetual licenses to things like Pixelmator Pro or they just might find a few people download the GIMP and realise its actually pretty good, and free!

Not a terrible price if they keep solid updates coming. Especially the student/educator deal.

But for my uses (Which are not much) I’ll stick with my Davinci Resolve, and Affinity Photo/Designer/Publisher combo going. And keep using my existing purchased versions of Motion/Compressor/FCP

apps like Numbers and Logic Pro have very different user bases. Forcing people who need just Numbers and Pages if they want advanced features to also pay for image and audio editing apps is nuts. No go for me.

This is the problem with bundles. MotionVFX did the same thing with their bundle. If you want mFlare2 which used to be $150 forever, you now need to pay $300 a year to get a bunch of other stuff you don't want and will never use.
