It is more than just price which i agree is too high. The major issues in my mind is no stereo and no inputs for optional sources. Basically Apple forgot that people own other things in the home beyond iOS products.

Everyone with a brain predicted this.

Cut the price.

Being $100 overpriced will cause lackluster sales.

So will incompatibility and Siri. Just take Siri out back and shoot it.

What on earth did they think was going to happen when they went to twice the price of their main competitors...

Yes, I got the $50 Google home to test these products, does the same or more than the Apple, and is about as useless. They are a toy you give someone who has everything, thats about it.

They thought that people keen on sound quality would pay the money, and those who don't care wouldn't. Seems about right. There is no _need_ for another product that just copies what others are doing.

Lack of Airplay 2 is keeping me from buying a second one. Growth will be next holiday season. Just like the Apple Watch, this one will go "slowly" by analyst standards.
Fair argument. Airplay 1 works just fine with _one_ HomePod but not so well with two.

Coming in and grabbing 10% of the smart speaker market in just the first couple weeks, with a premium priced product is a big accomplishment. Not enough credit is being given here. Can you imagine if Ferrari came out with a car that captured 10% of the total market?

Far better to have to cut orders than have too few to meet demand. It's a smart move by a company that understands supply chain better than most.

--I think it's important to note that it took 10% of the smart speaker market in sales over a 10-week period. It most definitely does not currently have 10% of the entire market of purchased smart speakers already in use.

Of course it sold well when if first came out. It was from Apple, and so many folks will buy Apple no matter what.

But - they did not deliver. And, I am thinking most of those saying they would buy it at $200 would still be taking it back. It just does not deliver.

(I have iphones, macbooks, ipads - so an Apple guy, but love my Amazon Echo stuff)

I have a slight problem with you comparison - there are high-end audio brands that can used as the equivalent of a Ferrari in a car analogy, but Apple isn't one of them in that market, despite the audio tech brought in when they acquired Beats.

On the flip side, Amazon and Google are direct (and natural) competitors, and Apple doesn't do so poorly - 10% of the market is indeed decent and nothing worth going doom & gloom.

The price is indeed off, so is Siri's lackluster performance, and Apple might have been a little too confident for the first iteration of the HP - future versions will indeed be much better.

Excellent point of observation there. I didn’t think of it like that but that is a fact, overall it has a tiny tiny tiny percentage of the market.

Tim Cook’s leaden grey touch of death.

If he cared about more than just profits and social justice Apple might have some inspiring products. He repaints Steve’s old products and comes out with half-hearted new ones that nobody wants.
Tell that to the Apple Watch or iPhone X or the new Mac line , airpods or services

If having a good voice assistant was number 1 for me I would have got google mini

Sound was what I wanted first

I agree, I don't have the need for an assistant but then the exciting sonic features when they first announced it haven't materialised yet. There's clearly a lot of tech and potential in them but it seems like a beta product rushed to market. Hope they can create an Atmos or proper surround capable set up when watching films with an Apple TV and multiple HomePods.

Right, overall the Mac has a minute percentage of the global PC market. And they had to half part supplies for the iPhone X because it has been an utter sales failure!

The only device there that you mentioned which we ‘presume because Apple has NEVER released actual factual sales data’, has been of reasonable success is the Apple Watch.

Overpriced. Most people are content with the sound quality from the Echo/Google Home for something like this. I say most. There's definitely a market for people who appreciate high fidelity audio. But when you can pick up several devices for the same price as one homepod - it's attractive to go elsewhere. Also Siri isn't nearly as functional as Google/Alexa. It just isn't.

I don’t get it. I love apple products, but I just don’t get the HomePod. I have a pioneer soundbar connected to my Apple TV, I order Siri through my Apple Watch, AirPods or remote and the pioneer gives me great sound. If want mobile sound, I get my little UE and that’s that. HomePods are just a bait for your money.

I think a lot of it is because today’s Apple designers and product planners in their hermetically-sealed design/spaceship chambers are as far out of touch with what users want as the typical multimillionaire politician is to the average American. Lost their hunger and real-world perspective. A victim of Apple’s success.

Lessons to learn:

"Sound quality" is a hard sell. Always has been. So people just rely on branding. Beats didnt sell because of sound quality. Neither does Sonos really. It sells because of the overall branding and utility.

Which leads to the second issue "Utility"
It's just not as useful to as many people as it can be. At least 60% of music fans are on a system (Spotify) that your device doesnt really support. And Siri isnt as easy to use as Amazon or Google.

Finally, (and the most important part)
Stop announcing things so damn early! When did this mindset start? Release it when its ready and does MORE than anything else out there. It doesnt have to be perfect, just make it do MORE than its competitor or dont release it.

I've noticed more and more Apple keep announcing things then get pressured into releasing it half baked. How do you release a speaker that cant even pair in 2018! And airplay 2 isnt even out yet. Should have delayed to you had both at minimum. Now you have a branding problem because the perception (whatever updates you do) will be the product is crap. (Windows Vistaitus..)

This whole treadmill schedule that Apple seem to be on, yearly cadence, preview to scupper others etc.. is becoming counter productive. They are releasing products that are always a little "off" and it will start to effect the brand. Companies at Apple's level DONT do this, they have the money to survive if they dont release the product unfinished so why bother?

And Siri is REALLY letting you down. This is a more important issue than anything else right now.

A bit wrong on the sound quality thing because it can be a matter of taste, like television screens one says it’s great, the other rubbish.

Also Sonos has sold so well because it has become the home brand name for decent home media networking and streaming. May not be the best but it is the one everyone thinks off and they consistently get good reviews. Like Philips Hue really.

Mac sales have never been at the same level as PC sales but they are up since Tim took over. The iPhone X is not an “utter sales failure” you can tell that by looking at the ASP and overall profits of Apple to know that. You paint Tim Cook as a failure yet sales in every category are up since he took over.
