Does this mean when the dollar totally collapses because of their massive debt and China cashes in on all the billions of dollar bonds they hold, the rest of the world would be able to buy macs for pennies?

This is a commendable move by apple i think most companies would have turned a blind eye and enjoyed getting a higher profit.

Or Apple just moves to a different country...

The big problem is that Europe converts USD prices to Euros on a 1:1 ratio. This means that if a MBP is 1000 USD in US then it's 1000 Euros here plus other taxes the retailer can dream up. So, yeah...it's "a little bit" unfair.
As an example i'm going to take the entry level MBP 1199 USD in US but here in Romania we pay the equvalent of 1851.34 USD based on today's exchange rate.

Well, everything costs significantly less in the States. For this reason I have a good habit of ordering from the US whatever I can. Often saves as much as 50% off the price back home (Russia, UK).

Whoa, especially since Romania's GDP per capita is $7,500.

When i bought my first macbook pro a few years ago i checked this out to.

For the price of buying it in Holland i could buy a ticket to New York, buy a macbook at the apple flagship store, have dinner, watch a show and fly back home and it would save me 150 US :p

Thats just rediculous...

That's going to cut down on tourism to gateway cities in the US. New York and San Francisco only look "cheap" to buyers of Apple equipment (and luxury items). :(

Man I really wish I could reveal my source, but I know new MBA's are coming tomorrow. I couldn't get him to tell me if Lion was coming too, but whatever. I know nobody will believe me, and I hate that! At least this kind of news is starting to point to it being true anyway.

Now, now, of course we believe you, just like we do everyone on a rumors forum. :D

I wish they don't do this.
I am from Australia and just bought an iMac with the Apple tax included. The catch is the currencies fluctuate all the time. And Apple have known to hold their prices pretty steady. And if the currency changes, Apple just get a little more or less profits.

Despite what everyone says Australia gets good Apple prices. So I'm against the international prices changing too much. The current prices work. it's not hampering sales all that much.

But heck I'm no expert. If Apple think doing this will equal more profits the go for it. But I'll be just as happy if they don't reduce the prices at all too.

i wonder what the prices are going to be if the US defaults on its debts?
Nothing at all. In that case 100% of the international sales will stay as international currencies in foreign banks. Cause import tax + the weak US dollar makes it a bad time to move all that money back to the US.

The sales within the US though hmmm I dunno. The prices of Apple products might have to rise in the US to cover the weakening US dollar's effect on Apple.

About bloody time!!!

Sales tax in most states in the USA is about 8%.
At the time of writing an 8 core Mac Pro retails for $3499. Add 8% sales tax and this takes the total to $3780.00.
The current exchange rate £-$ is 1.54, which means an 8 core Mac Pro in Pounds Sterling should cost £2454.00.
However, to buy the same Mac Pro in the UK you'd pay £2859.00 - which means we pay £400 ($616) more, so an adjustment is long overdue and I hope this report turns out to be accurate and prices are amended.

Believe me. Mac Pro's need that Thunderbolt stuff, I know that the White MacBook's and the Mac Mini's are rumored to being updated, but Mac Pro's are next on my list to buy if updated.

Currency: Is the US dollar still the standard for international trade? Isn't our Dollar worth way less then the Euro? I think we should have a universal currency like Republic Credits in Star Wars...or what have you .

Prices here in the UK are much higher than in the US, even when you consider the tax. After the educational discount it's still more expensive I believe.

EDIT:
Did some calculations based on the 2.2 15 inch MBP:
US = $2200
UK = £1849
UK conversion = US$2940.99
UK minus 20% VAT = US$2352.79
after the 15% educational discount UK = US$1999.87ù

Still, that's a difference of US$152.79 before the discount. much less than I had thought, but it'd be nice for cheaper prices. Really it's the tax that's ridiculous. Luckily I live in Malawi, so I can get VAT off.
Whats the US tax rate like in most states?

Your maths suck.

$2940.99 ÷ 1.2 = $2450.83

VAT is added onto the net, therefore the gross is 100% + 20%VAT = 120%

Yup. My job pays 727USD, and it's considered a very good salary here and I want to buy a Mac Pro 6 Core (1 CPU) and it's 5662 USD. Don't ask me when I will manage.
Apple does need to do something about the pricing on the Mac PROs. You can get 8 core servers with SAS drives for a lot less than the basic Mac PRO.

Great to see, though I wonder really how much it will reflect in increased sales given so many are happy to pay a premium for apple products to start with.
