If Rene Ritchie is correct with his prediction of no Retna Display in the next iPad Mini, I'll defiantly pass! What compelling upgrade can they make to the Mini? Maybe a speed bump in the processor, or maybe some added ram? Thanks but no thanks, to me that is not compelling at all!!

He's not making a prediction though. He's just relaying what his reliable and proven source at Apple has indicated to him. I'm not going to dig it up but several times in the last few years he's been spot on down to the event announcement dates and release dates before anyone else.

Even before this, it was mentioned several times by many that a retina Mini isn't happening anytime soon for obvious reasons. I know people don't want to hear this but you need to adjust your expectations.

Apple is all about profit margin. The ipad Mini was reaching down to grab more sales. It's differentiated by being thin and light. Low cost is a priority on this for Apple. Bottom line, you are NOT going to get a Mini ipad with that kind of screen.

is it still a good time to buy an ipad mini? was considering a 16gb ipad mini with 50 dollar staples coupon

If I were you, I will wait for the iPad mini 2. Reports in February 2013 suggested the iPad mini 2 retina display was already being manufactured, i like idevice with retina display.

Is retina really more important than the entire OS and ecosystem?
You will be surprised how many people do not understand the apple ecosystem vs. the competition. All my bluray digital copies are in I tunes and I can access them on my iPhone, iPad, Mac book, iMac and Apple TV.

I was really intending to buy the next iPad Mini. Unfortunately, as I have to buy a new tablet in July, it won't be available on time so I'll have to choose between the other 7" tablets.

You mean you'll just keep your Android tablet then?

...so Apple is going to choke off sales about 6 months before they refurbish the product because... they are sick of making money? These analysts sound real smart.

Who said anything about "choking off sales"? "Cutting shipments" is quite different. It means they will start reducing shelf stock in their stores to make room for the new models. Apple will continue sell the stock that has managed to pile up as peak demand has gradually subsided, so there will be plenty of product for sale.

Do you actually use or plan on using one? Just asking since I also feel the urge to complain about the Mac Pro not coming out even though I'm set on keeping my 2008 one for a long time ;)

Is there a small (but vocal) group of users for Mac Pro's?

Seems odd that the last refresh was still outdated for what I have read.

That argument works to an extent if you've invested heavily in iOS and Apple as a company. It's seems less important in the overall market. If I want all of my devices to have high DPI screens (sorry, I try to not let marketing terminology like Retina enter my lexicon), the manufacturer doesn't really matter as it relates to integration. Cross platform integration is becoming less and less of an issue because "there's an app for that".

Fanboy flame rage aside, the criticism that Apple is a walled garden is increasingly more a perception than a reality. The App Store is populated with apps from Google, Microsoft, and others. So if someone wants to own a Nexus 7, Nokia Lumina 920, and an MBA, they can and they can all communicate. There are a ton of people who are device agnostic and they make it work. There's nothing wrong with that. Apple is smart in accommodating those people because it gives them access to more customers. There's also nothing wrong with the person who has to have this :apple: on everything. As the technology advances the line will become blurred even further.

How does that exactly work? How would they limit a function which is a part of the device?

Not sure, but before activating the cellular account, I did some research. The salesperson at the store had assured me that any of the cellular carrier models could use the Hotspot. He may not have known that AT&T only limited this to their Mobile Share and $50 / 5 GB plans. Whereas the Hotspot feature is available on Verizon on any plan tier. I just didn't have the use for that much data or justification for that much monthly spend. A $15 or $20 plan was more in line with my needs / budget.

Why did you buy the mini in the first place? The things you mention can both be found out by just strolling into a shop and testing the thing and asking some questions to the staff..

When I bought it I was probably 60/40 on keeping it/returning it. Unfortunately sometimes using it for 5 or even 25 minutes at the store doesn't quite give you the same experience. And while it was a test drive in a sense, I did originally lean towards keeping it.

Something else that I discovered during the short time I had it, was that while AT&T and Verizon both have good LTE coverage in the Denver area, Verizon has much better coverage along the I-70 corridor up to the mountains, ie. ski resorts as well as significantly better coverage in the mountain towns. My AT&T iPhone 5 only gets spotty 3G or 4G coverage in Breckenridge as well as poor reception along I-70 whereas my father in law had full LTE coverage in Breck and much better coverage along the way there. For someone hoping to use a Mini in the car heading to the mountains and while up there for a night, the AT&T coverage was inadequate.

While I could have returned the Mini and purchased a Verizon in its stead once I found this out, I am currently an AT&T iPhone subscriber and didn't want to split myself between two carriers as I may eventually want to combine on a shared plan. So I figured I would wait until the retina Mini came out and reassess the available plans, plan features, and extent of AT&T coverage at that time.

I'll be keen to see both the lighter Mini-style full size iPad and the Retina Mini. One way or another Apple will take my money this time.

Man Apple needs to come out with more than 1 new iPad, iPad mini, and iPhone a year. Does anyone remember when they were a computer company?

They did release 5 updated computers last year too..

Retina may actually be a better term than High DPI in this case. Screens like the Amoled on the S4 are also High DPI but they offer a noticeably poorer viewing experience than lower DPI "Retina" devices. Perhaps we need a different term.

I hate to encourage the Mac Pro discussions in unrelated threads, but what the heck.

The last update was still outdated when it was released. It has been several years since the Pros have had an actual update.
