For me, yes. I read e-books and surf the net on a tablet. High-rez displays are far more important for those two tasks than the OS or ecosystem.

Exactly. If a tablet is used to READ, as in, READ BOOKS, then a very small fraction of time is spent interacting with the OS.

Another point is that with Android it is much easier to manually transfer large numbers of eBooks and PDFs. Just drag and drop a whole directory of thousands of files organized in a deep hierarchy. With Apple, you have flat organization in iTunes or iCloud. That's a huge compromise required to use Apple's "ecosystem".

Every year these rumors start about an update to an product, even though there's still huge demand for the old one. They are never, ever true.

We know Apple will milk the first gen iPad Mini pony dry before updating for all the rabid consumers. They've done this since the very first iPod and been hugely successful. Why would they change now?

The last report of Apple massively cutting production turned out to be completely wrong. They announced a record quarter soon after. And yet, "investors" lap this garbage up like it's honey. Tim Cook said these supply chain rumors are bogus, and the numbers proved him right. And yet, "Wall Street" is convinced that the sky is falling. I'm not sure where anybody should invest, because interest rates are close to zero, and the stock market is behaving as if making money is bad and losing money is good.

Please Apple ,A6 plus 1GB ,not A5 and Retina..
i understand this way Mini would eat normal Ipad sales..
and A7 is not yet here.,maybe just on early 2014....
gosh..

Retina is Not a Marketing Term

Apple actually has patents as it is not related to Pixel Density but the arrangements of the pixels and specific technology addressing color edging. I posted this in another couple of threads. It makes screens look sharper at a lower pixel density than similar screens. It does not preclude higher densities - but it is a technology used to make any pixel density sharper and clearer than similar pixeled screens not using the technology.

They did release 5 updated computers last year too..

Retina may actually be a better term than High DPI in this case. Screens like the Amoled on the S4 are also High DPI but they offer a noticeably poorer viewing experience than lower DPI "Retina" devices. Perhaps we need a different term.

I have to disagree with you there. IMO Retina is only a better term as it relates to the back of my eyeball.:D The noticeably poorer viewing experience you mention seems to be more marketing speak. I've read multiple reviews on the S4, and depending on the reviewers bias, the screen is either "much better than the iPhone", "just as gorgeous as the iPhone", or "although the screen is much improved over the S3, the iPhone 5 still has the superior screen". Reviewers have varying opinions on the screen and so will the public. Unless you've actually compared the screens yourself saying the viewing experience is poorer is a bit of supposition that may or may not be true.

If it sounds as if I am criticizing you I apologize. I am definitely not. You present sound arguments that don't seem unreasonable. This isn't discourse that would be possible with my wife. Firmly in the Apple fangirl camp. Me? I'm agnostic. GSIII and an iPad 2. They both get the job done with screens that "just work"

Times have changed

What you are stating is absolutely correct for 2010. However, more than just tech nerds understand these cycles now and put off buying existing ones when there is a chance a new one is around the corner. Apple has traditionally released new iPads in spring. I don't think its a stretch that many people would stop ordering old ones, because they feel a new one is imminent.

There is absolutely no contradiction between "Apple cutting production" and "record quarter". Apple ordered record high amounts of devices and then cut production. They still sold record amounts but not as high as the original expectations. Market sets stock prices based on projections and expectations. If Apple places orders and then cuts them, it means that they are performing below their own expectations. Remember that they know well in advance about new releases and plan production volumes accordingly. Something forced them to make a correction (and most likely it's lower than expected sales).

Something forced them to make a correction (and most likely it's lower than expected sales).

Or they switched to a new supplier for certain parts. Or manufacturing was slower than expected. Or it was more efficient to produce certain parts at peak capacity and then cut it down after demand stabilized.

Or... only possibilities that fit our preconceived ideas should be considered. :D

We all know what coming. Retina iPad mini.

Basically, the device the should have come out the first time around.

except that the technology is not ready last year.. wake up and smell the technology race in the LCD space

He's not making a prediction though. He's just relaying what his reliable and proven source at Apple has indicated to him. I'm not going to dig it up but several times in the last few years he's been spot on down to the event announcement dates and release dates before anyone else.

Even before this, it was mentioned several times by many that a retina Mini isn't happening anytime soon for obvious reasons. I know people don't want to hear this but you need to adjust your expectations.

Apple is all about profit margin. The ipad Mini was reaching down to grab more sales. It's differentiated by being thin and light. Low cost is a priority on this for Apple. Bottom line, you are NOT going to get a Mini ipad with that kind of screen.

heh heh, do you know what price are they going to charge for the Ipad mini retina yet? what if it is priced at 429 for 16GB? Now would we have an Ipad mini retina?

There won't be a retina mini this year so it doesn't matter. Besides 429 wouldn't be enough for something that cost more to make than the bigger iPads.

Manufacturing price is not a factor in regards to implementing a retina display. Many companies put out a product at a subsidized price in order to gain profit from sales elsewhere, whether that be iTunes, the app store, or accessories.

Sure, but Apple isn't one of those companies..

I rather have the A6 and 1Gb than A5 and Retina also. That's not to say if it had Retina. I'd complain but I'd could live with the spec boost

OS X is a pretty good example of that, actually.

Not really. Apple's primary business is selling hardware. All these other revenue streams Apple has are pretty much immaterial in comparison.

A good example is Amazon or Google. One is ecommerce, the other ads & search. Both can sell products at low to no margin and not blink. They're only doing this to bolster their primary businesses.

I remember all along during the original iPad and the iPad 2 never hearing anyone complain about the screen. If you accept that the iPad mini is a smaller version of iPad 2 with a slightly higher DPI, it is a great product. It is a perfectly adequate screen. I owned the nexus 7 briefly and despite higher DPI, to my eyes I prefer the iPad mini display.
I love my 64GB Verizon iPad mini and I just bought it this month! Got tired of waiting for the next version. I couldn't be happier. To each their own I guess, but I would say if you want one now, just get it. At least look at one at an apple store if you have not done so already.
I would take a speed bump or more ram over a retina display. I own a iPhone 5 as well. I would love to have the amazing eyesight you all must have to be able to see individual pixels on the mini screen when viewed from a normal distance!
