Somehow I just KNEW this would eventually be blamed on Apple. Microsoft sucks the big one.

I think the culture of Microsoft changed massively in the past 10 years... for the better for sure.

I still suspect, even if he’s statutorily forbidden from doing so, Bill Gates still exerts influence at Microsoft.

For anyone who has followed Microsoft long enough, it became easy to spot stances and actions that were all Bill Gates.

In certain instances, it was easy to perceive when Microsoft’s behavior was really a manifestation of Bill Gates’ persona.

Attitudes like, No one must be allowed to succeed but Microsoft. No credit goes to anyone else.

Netscape must be destroyed. MSN must destroy AOL.

MSN Video must destroy YouTube. Office must destroy all spreadsheets, word processors and slideshow presentation apps/suites.

Zune must destroy iPod.

Microsoft “Nokia” must destroy iPhone.

Xbox must destroy PlayStation.

Microsoft Dynamics must destroy Oracle.

Bing must destroy Google. Surface must destroy iPad. Viva Engage must destroy Facebook. Mixer must destroy Twitch — and all other players. Azure must destroy AWS.

I’ve always thought that the most powerful of the forces that drove Bill Gates was jealously. (And secondarily, his quest for credit and recognition — something he would share with no one!)

The proof is seen in how Microsoft has wasted Billions in rash acquisitions and expensive “adventures” — many of which failed miserably — in disparate categories that Microsoft just couldn’t stay out of! (Because Bill Gates couldn’t contain his limitless jealousy, IMO.)

The failed Zune “adventure” to kill the iPod ended up costing Microsoft well over a Billion dollars — even forcing Microsoft (MSFT) to report a $289 Million loss one Financial Quarter.

Its Nokia “adventure” to destroy iPhone reportedly cost Microsoft at least $8 Billion (Source: The Verge).

These aren’t the actions of a judicious, discerning, responsible corporation; these are the reckless whims of a jealous, maniacal megalomaniac.

(IMHO.)

I don’t like Bill Gates, btw.

I don’t know if you people missed reading the content or just read the headline.

Apple isn’t accused of anything, google is the accused

And Microsoft CEO is just a witness called to the stand in the United States v. Google LLC is an ongoing federal antitrust case brought by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) against Google LLC on October 20, 2020. The suit alleges that Google has violated the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 through anti-competitive behavior in the search engine and search advertising markets.
The Title of the article and the first paragraph of the article says that the CEO of Mircrosoft is saying that, they think the dominance of google search is because of it being a default browser on Apple. My comment was just reversing that logic, with my opinion, that Apple made it the default because of its dominance.

Also a headline of an article should be representative of the article that it is representing, which it is in this case.

Bing’s results and interface is terrible compared to google.
I actually prefer Bing's more visually enriched presentation of results. But the results themselves are just not nearly as useful. I've tried Bing, repeatedly, and have always gone back to Google because Google offers a superior search engine. Period.

I think I agree with you… since he stepped “away” things have sure changed for the better. It feels like a more open and collaborative company.

It is ironic that MS is commenting on monopolistic practices, but that’s a result of experience; being forced to remove IE as the default browser in Windows back in the 90s. Which is kind of laughable in hindsight, but I guess you could argue it was the same thing but different time period. People didn’t know they could download another browser so they often used the default option. Of course, today there are many browser options.

I don’t see why the same shouldn’t apply to Google search in the modern age, especially when there are huge kick backs involved to Apple, etc. People should be made aware of their options. If anything, I see it as government inaction or complacency (especially when government is lobbied by said tech companies).
People should make themselves aware of their options, especially when it's so petty and is not within the purview of the government. Stop being so lazy, click on Safari settings, click on Search, and select the search engine from the list of options. You don't need an Act of Congress. The "People didn't know they could download another browser" (and now search engine) was not true then and isn't true now. Netscape was literally everywhere, online, in every catalog, in every magazine and in every computer store. It failed for other reasons.

A similar argument could've been made regarding IE as it related to the DOJ case against Microsoft in the 1990s. Microsoft made IE the "default" browser on Windows and while they may have discouraged computer OEMs from offering alternative browsers, end users could at least still easily "look past" IE and download Navigator or another browser. Microsoft was still charged with anticompetitive behavior.

Back then people had to know exactly where to go as well as how to get there, and this was before everyone was heavily exposed to the internet. It was not a basic menu setting built right into the OS like it is on iPhone. Plus I recall Netscape making quite a lot of noise in court because they were charging for the browser and IE was free.

Microsoft made a bunch of historically horrible strategy decisions and when they lost a bunch of them, they started lobbying for government oversight.

They are the default OS of every major computer manufacturer, but they didn’t invest when they needed to. Here’s a greatest hits of their mistakes when they had more dominance.

Windows Mobile
They thought their dominance with Exchange would keep the competitors at bay. They even thought that BlackBerry licensing Exchange would keep them going.

Internet Explorer
They sat on their laurels and Google are their lunch. The internet/users as a whole suffered for a long time until Safari came to the market, and incidentally helped Google with their core engine in Chrome.

Bing
Instead of increasing their investment they were distracted with silly acquisitions.

The list goes on.

Side note - it’s interesting how they avoid talking about how they use their monopoly PC position to force feed Edge and Teams down the throats of the user base.

No, they didn't. Not a single one.
Oh they absolutely did.

X seems like quite a stretch Satya. Google was cemented as the preferred search engine (on Windows browsers) long before iPhone's were even a twinkle in Steve's eye
Completely irrelevant, it’s the anti trust nature of the deal. The phone being late or not
How about creating a good product? Bing is still bad and bloated, bing chat have an unbearable "personality" and output unpredictable results since microsoft try to hide which GPT model it's using. Microsoft knows people only use their products when users are unaware of alternatives or when it's the only option
Completely irrelevant and unrelated to their comment
Google had already achieved search dominance by the time the iPhone launched. It was already a verb
Completely irrelevant because the iPhone isn’t the issue being critiqued
isn’t this the same company that makes Edge the default browser on Windows? Oops
they are a witness against Google answering questions
And Microsoft is the default operating system on so many computers….hmmm who here has a monopoly on a market
they are a witness against Google answering questions
Or, “Google’s dominance in search responsible for Apple‘s deal”. Google was a verb before iPhone existed
iPhones aren’t the issue, the act of Google paying a company to have it as default is the issue according to the DOJ. And their dominance didn’t cause the deal, the “deal” existing is the issue

Says the guy who warns you if you install anything other than Edge as your default browser on Windows.
You want to be the default, pay more. End of story
They aren’t, they are a witness, Microsoft wanting to do the same thing is completely irrelevant to the function as a witness testimony against google.
That's pretty rich coming from Microsoft who goes out to corner the market by buying up their competitors like Bethesda and Activision. Maybe Microsoft should buy Google?
Sure, and irrelevant. Google is on trial, not Microsoft.
easier to blame someone else than to make Bing something people want to use
He did admit BING needed to be better under oath. And he isn’t blaming anyone, he is answering questions as witnesses.
why go after one major competitor when you can go after two? Maybe Google's anticompetitive agreements with android manufacturers across 70% of the global market has something to do with it as well
Irrelevant as this could already be the case with multiple antitrust cases against Google.
And who is Microsoft blaming for the market share of Windows mobile?
Irrelevant

He should stop complaining and instead invest more time, money and energy in improving the product than pointing fingers at Apple.

I changed my defaults. But nowadays it’s DuckDuckGo. Using it for years now.
"Google uses its 90 percent share in Internet search to continually improve its service in ways that are impossible with Microsoft’s unsuccessful Bing search service. [...] Microsoft can’t afford to improve Bing enough to be competitive because doing so will not rely in a commensurate return in investment."
There are the words of one of the best Microsoft analysts and he is damn right.

Yes, but many unsavvy users (like, say, my parents) would also not even understand the question and tap on the first thing that looks like it’ll let them do what they actually want to do, and that would reduce Google search’s market share a little bit.

The fun thing to do would be to not ask the user and instead just select one search engine at random. :D

I like that idea.

God, I remember when Netscape and AOL online were the big guys. Then Yahoo for years. They all could’ve positioned themselves into billion dollar leaders but faded out quite a bit, if not completely.

Well, MS is not a
Apple making their own search engine would take eons. Look at Maps, it’s still a work in progress.
Or just look at the macOS search, it’s so bad that I always use the terminal when i search for files ( find ~/ -iname ‘*filename*' )

Well the CEO is the witness on the stand. He is witnessing on behalf of Microsoft. And the title is completely misleading because what the CEO said was that he endorses the DOJ line of thinking

Testifying in a packed courtroom in Washington, Nadella endorsed the Justice Department’s theory that Google, a unit of parent company
Alphabet GOOG
, cemented its dominance of internet search through agreements with
AppleAAPL
that have made Google’s search engine the default on Apple’s Safari web browser.

Because of these default agreements, “you get up in the morning, you brush your teeth, and you search on Google,” Nadella said. “With that level of habit forming, the only way to change is by changing defaults.”

And with this part about breaking habits. Are important missing pieces from the original article

Speaking as a developer saying Apple has a search engine for looking at apps on your operating system and then saying it could one day form the backbone of a search engine for the internet, is a bit like saying you have wheels on your Toyota Corolla, so one day you could use them as the backbone to make a competitive formula one racing car.
