As far as apple making their own Multi-button mouse, I hope that it has a scroll wheel and will be made available in a wired version as well. I reallly don't see the point of wireless mice. IMHO more batteries are the last thing I want to worry about when computing.

I completely agree, I hope IF Apple finally makes a two button mouse, that it has a scroll wheel, and a wire.

Multi-button Mouse = Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome

I think it's beyond awesome that Apple is finally considering a multi-button mouse. So many PC users take one look at the 1-button Mac mouse and quite simply think 'what a joke'. They just can't get past that (and I don't blame them) so they never take Macs seriously, and certainly would never dream of 'paying extra to get less' as one PC user told me. The iPod is great, but a 2-button mouse would do more for Apple's rep and sales overall as a company than any amount of iPods. I just hope they stay the course and actually release it!

Laptops.

(I agree about batteries: recharging is a must, and doing so through USB without needing a battery charger is ideal.

stop dictating, start listening

Yes, it`s pretty obvious that one of the reasons why Apple has held such a small market share has been its irrational stubbornness and snobbery. I think Apple puts out a great product, but there is no reason not to put out a 2-button mouse.

2-buttoners can use it, but so can 1-buttoners. :D

Making a great computer that is accessible to all users should be the marketing strategy at Apple, and I think this is the way they are starting to go. :)

Prediction:

Apple will introduce the two-button scroll wheel mouse and keep the one button as "standard equipment" to keep both camps happy.

The two button scrolling mouse will be a smash hit. People who hate dealing with battery life issues or don't have bluetooth will chide Apple for only making it wireless. Apple will release a wired version.

The two-button scroll wheel mouse will dwarf the contingent asking for keep just the original one-button mouse. Apple will phase out the one button mouse due to lack of interest.

I love my one button mouse!!! But I wouldn't mind a one button mouse with a scroll wheel :D

However, I've never used a two-button mouse that was as easy as a single button mouse, so maybe if Apple's two-button mouse is better than what I've seen it might be worth checking out.

I think there are many people on this forum that would agree clicking the right mouse button is much easier than command clicking.

If the rumors are true, this will not be a typical two-button mouse, just like the optical Apple mouse is not a typical one button mouse.

99% of the world's computer users use at a 2-button mouse. Why does Apple continue making a 1 button mouse for the 1%? Apple. Stupid.

Anybody on this thread who says that they love their one-button mouse has NEVER, and I mean NEVER used a 2-button scrollwheel mouse. Because anybody using a 2-button scrolling mouse would NEVER go back. You guys have absolutely no idea how much productivity you're wasting by using a single button mouse. This has been long overdue from Apple for about 15 years now. Amen. The sooner the better. Furthermore, the one button mouse has actually PREVENTED many of my PC friends from getting Macs b/c they said they couldn't live without a two-button mouse -- until I set them straight, of course, and said that they could buy a third-party mouse. But honestly folks, anybody who says they love a one-button mouse over a two-button mouse is either ignorant or just plain stupid.

I was a PC user for about 8 years before switching, and I had a two button wheel mouse the instant they came available, along with an optical one when they came available. Once I switched over to the Mac, I gave the one button mouse a try and haven't even looked back.

What if...

The rumour said "Jaws will Drop"

So, what if it's not really a 2-button mouse as such, but a 2 button device to replace the mouse entirely. Personally I don't think most peoples jaws will drop at a mouse in the form that we already have, no matter how many buttons or scrolling features it has.

Apple are known for their innovation, maybe they have something really amazing up their sleeves!

Hey, We're Scared

1 - "It seems that people want to stick with a one-button mouse 'because it's what makes a Mac a Mac'"

Well, hopefully you've been able to see that there are many of us who have good reasons. I use three computers at work. Two are Windows. All 3 use Apple's one-button mice. Obviously, I wouldn't use a one-buttoner on two Windows machines it makes Windows a Mac. ;)

My primary reason - the joints in my pointer finger can't handle a two-button mouse. Which leaves me trying to use other fingers to click the left button. Which becomes very awkward and gets everything else hurting.

2 - Scrolling - ugh - even worse for your joints. Arrow keys are so much better. Who decided your middle finger should be able to make that motion? (Not to mention it's far too easy to accidentally scroll.)

3 - iGary, can I come work for you? My office won't even get me a Mac (I bring in my own), let alone promise me a one-button work environment!

4 - The idea that anyone who prefers any kind of mouse must not be a power user is ridiculous. It's about how you relate to your machine. (I'd do my whole routine here, but I've already done it on MR.) This is a "blow them off so I don't have to consider their side" response. I'd think Mac users would be better than that. :(

5 - The idea that all one-button users just love keyboard shortcuts is simply not true. There's a handy thing called a Menu Bar at the top of your screen that negates the need to memorize shortcuts. And, because the Mac OS is so well designed, everything you need is there!

(Which splits us into 3 camps:
Primary interface - Keyboard Shortcuts (One or Two-Button Fans)
Primary interface - Menu Bar (One button fans)
Primary interface - Contextual Menus (Two-Button Fans))

6 - The idea that one-button users think Control+Click is more intuitive than Right Click is also not true. I accept that I prefer Control+Click probably just because I'm tied to the one-button mouse. I can give you other good reasons, but I recognize my own bias. But, the truth is, the only time I have to Control+Click is on my Windows machines. It really doesn't matter what maneuver gets me to a contextual menu on a Mac (it can involve standing on my head if it makes Steve happy), because I have no desire to use them. Edit>Copy or RightClick>Copy. I only need one. :)

7 - Why are us one-button supporters so religious about it? We're scared. Multi-button users have many options. We only have one company making one-button mice. If Apple stops, what are the chances that another company will fill the void? Chances are that iGary, I, and others will have to stock up on the current one-buttoners (assuming we get some warning before Apple discontinues them) and pray that USB doesn't go the way of ASB in our lifetimes - and that OS10.6 doesn't drop support of one-button mice. I'm truly scared, as it affects my ability to be productive at my computer.

Apparently, this is something people will put in their mouths. Interesting... use your mouth to control the mouse, keep your hands on the keyboard. ;)

Two Button Mouse

I am one of the most loyal die hard Mac users. I have used Macs my entire life!! I however don't understand how some Mac users out there are so pro one button mouse!

I agree. I couldn't imagine life without my two button use and scroll wheel, and I too am an avid Mac user.

If you haven't already, try scrolling web pages with a scroll wheel and sending items to the trash with your second mouse button.

Then tell me your one button mouse doesn't suck.

Maybe a two button mouse with an iPod style touchwheel. To me that makes sense. I use my index finger for left mouse button actions, and take that finger off that button when I want to use my scroll wheel. I would do the same with an iPod style trackwheel. Who knows...maybe even a clickwheel.

So that would be...what? Six buttons plus scroll capabilities.

I know, it sounds a bit ugly. But if it can be done, Apple will surely try and blow us away with a mouse.

First of all, never say "NEVER." I have two mice on my computer right now. I have them both hooked up to the USB hub on the back of my Studio Display. One is the standard one button mouse; the other is a 2 button scroll wheel Microsoft mouse. I find myself using the one button mouse 95% of the time. The only time I use the Microsoft mouse is then I VNC into a UNIX account. I also will on occasion use the MS mouse while playing a game. Still, I use my one button mouse most of the time in the game because when speed counts, I am faster pressing with my hand than with one finger. Guys, don't get your panties in a wad....it is just a preference. I prefer a one button mouse. There are very few things (none that I use on a daily basis) that cannot be done with one button without the control key. I just like the feel of clicking with all of my fingers and hand instead of just one finger. Plus, after a days work, my hand and arm agree with me at the end of the day, too. If Apple releases a 2-button mouse, then more power to them. Will I buy one? No, but I am sure there are many people out there that will. Options are good, especially when they come from Apple. ~Josh

Now that got me laughing out loud!

You never know, Apple have been thinking about mouths recently, may be the whole "do not eat iPod Shuffle" statement was related to the new edible mouse somehow ;)

It's a banner day! I can get rid of yet another microsoft project in my office!! :D

I think single button mice are great for the first two days of using OS X. They're also great for children under five years of age.

But I pray that this is correct, because it won't mean an automatic mouse purchase whenever I get a new desktop Mac, and it'll let me use an Apple mouse.

But anyone who thinks single button mice are even remotely as productive as multi-button scrolling mice (God, I hope the new one scrolls...) must use applications very different from the ones I use.
exactly.. what really puzzles me is how shake (an apple application) requires a 3 button mouse. its like dell telling people to go buy an ipod instead of their dj thing because the ipod is better.. even if shake is a pro app..

I want a scroll wheel!

I don't need no stinkin' second button. That is why god gave us a command key...

But I really, really do want a scroll buttun. I scroll all the time, next to clicking probably the second most common single thing I do.

People who are pro 1-button Apple mouse are just elitist mac snobs. (yeah, you know who you are) ;)
