Yep, both ring.

And if he has more than one Mac then all Mac's ring too.

That's very cool. Skype does the same thing, though.

What intrigues me most about this app is that it doesn't have to be open. It runs in the background unless you actively choose to completely disable it in the settings in osx.

It's sort of skype on steroids. Having it always running will actually make it useful. What I always hated about skype is that ppl forget to open the app.

FaceTime is not revolutionary. Far from it. But apple might just have made video calling more appealing to everybody. Why not cooperate with skype? Integrate it into facetime in some way. Let the video-juices flow! :D

Not working for me. Click on an email address on my iPhone and it just opens the email app. No option to do Facetime with mbp. Facetime is switched on in the settings. What dumb thing am I doing wrong?

Yes registered email address and installed app on mbp

What id like to know is how to do you edit your contacts to add or delete and the weirdest thing is I have a blackberry so how the heck did Facetime get all my contacts from my blackberry exactly the way I have them set in my phone and listed them in Facetime?

It draws from your Address Book on the Mac. I'm guessing it draws from Outlook contacts (or wherever you manage your Blackberry contacts) on Windows.

Open Contacts. Don't click the email address, click the Facetime button.

So we need to sign up for ichat to use facetime? I dont see the point in this I dont use ichat so just having the facetime app is simple and works for me.

With FaceTime, you use your Apple ID, so you already signed up for something. I would expect that any sane/smart integration of FaceTime and iChat would allow "regular" (iChat-style, computer-to-computer) video chats using FaceTime/Apple ID accounts in addition to AIM accounts as it currently does. Really it's just one additional account type and back-end protocol to add to iChat. If you're already setup for FaceTime with your iPhone, then you wouldn't care at all that iChat supports other account types; you're already set to go. You wouldn't even have to know that other account types are supported!

Why do you care what the average user thinks? You aren't confused yourself :)

This is true, but I care about having good software, and two different apps for the same functionality is poor design. One might even say it's fragmented. Hmm, did anyone at Apple recently bash a competitor for being fragmented? ;)

Of course Apple is aware of this app redundancy. But I'm sure, there's a reason for it right now.
FaceTime and iChat will probably come together in som new way with Lion. It's still only in beta, thus, it makes sense to keep it separate.

One would hope so. But there've been plenty of times in the past where the most "obvious" path going forward was not taken by Apple, often to the extreme frustration of users who cared about that particular feature.

Looks like you have to have iOS 4.1 on your iPhone or if there is no telephone number in your contact then it disables the Facetime button. Oh well I'll have to wait for iOS 4.1 to be jailbroken...

Surely -Had loads of problems signing in and verifying my account. Just keep trying it gets there in the end

I can't wait to get this installed on my families computers....that actually have webcams

Seriously, I can see this being perfect and far less complicated than chat programs, they'll love it! :)

I can't get pass this. I've done the update on my imac and mbp and it still says i'm missing this patch.

Apple needs FaceTime for Windows also.

Is there even a difference between using Facetime vs Ichat? Is it just that Ichat isn't available on the iphone and ipad?

Facetime is through your AppleID email. No AIM/MSN/whatever. No buddy lists. And it works in the background; the App doesn't have to be running for the call to come through.
