32 GB is obsolete. Should be 64 GB and 128 GB. Pro models should be 128 GB and 256 GB. As memory sizes increase, the prices remain the same or drop. I bet they could do 512 GB on the larger pro model if they wanted to. Then it would really replace a computer.

I'm pretty sure there's more to replacing a computer than matching storage (and many PC's are just fine with 128GB SSD when there are other methods of storage). An iPad needs a new OS to really replace a computer.

I fear they may eventually discontinue the Mini size, rather than update it.

Well, yeah... especially given that they only adjusted the price and didn't update it internally. I think it will be discontinued... but It will be available for awhile just to provide customers that given screen size.

Apple still hasn't figured out it's possible to update the store without downtime. SAD!

Did you see all the marketing hype around the store going down. It's free advertising. Why would they even change that? Help me understand your viewpoint. Help me understand the advantage to Apple for making the change.

I really don't think that it is. Even if the display was the same, how much is the faster processor really going to improve your iPad using experience? Enough to justify hundreds of dollars? This model isn't really an upgrade over the Air 2, or even Mini 4.
This model is not an upgrade to the air 2.
Apple see iPad sale fall quarter after quarter. They had to change the iPad line. They started with the iPad pro, now it is the second move.
The iPad is now for school and for people already satisfied with aging old iPad (assuming Apple think they are close to reach their end service) or want a cheap content consumption device.

I think the next iPhone will be the same thickness or even thicker. Apple tends to plan ahead, so I think they are setting the stage for that.

Amazing deal. My wife and I have an old iPad Air and an old iPad Mini which we use to watch Netflix in bed. This will 100% replace, at least, the Mini. Can't wait!

I'm liking the new iPad refresh. This is what I've been waiting for since I have no use for most of the things excluded from this new base model and it's priced right. My iPad Air is getting up their. Anybody know if this device is heavier than the original iPad Air? I know it's heavier than the iPad Air 2 but my understanding is that the iPad Air 2 was lighter than the iPad Air so is it a net-net for original iPad Air users in the weight department?

On a side note it's kind of funny the message Apple is sending with this:

"To our mobile device users: we love you so much you're going to get a hardware refresh not once but twice this year.

To our desktop and laptop users: Go $&@% yourselves."

I may upgrade my kids iPad Mini 2s with these since the price point is nice and support is about to end on the Mini 2.

Anyone know how to get a hold of the model identifier number for this new iPad? Is it 7.3 for the Wifi and 7.4 for the LTE? If it is that is the last 9.7" model we're getting probably...just putting together the earlier report about a website seeing model identiers 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 & 7.4, which would correspond to new iPad mini and 9.7" iPad models.

The iPad mini 4 retains its model identifiers I assume, because it's name is the same. The new iPad model however, is not the same.

So it would be interesting to know!

Another iPad to the already messy, fragmented, unnecessarily long line up of iPads to saturate the already saturated mobile market while continuing to leave the demand of Macs behind..

I'd love to say we're losing faith Tim, but that was so long ago now.

Nothing was added, in fact there's one less iPad in the lineup. The iPad Air 2 and the Mini 2 were removed from the store, and only this new one was added. So the line decreased by one product, making it 4: two pros in two sizes, this iPad, and the mini 4. Oh but that doesn't really fit your narrative, my bad.

Jobs in that picture looks like a Sim that you just told to walk through a wall hah

The new iPad just released has the EXACT SAME dimensions and weight as the iPad Air 1.

If the store goes down, people are expecting something bigger than this. And Apple is in need to do something big on all fronts. Building this hype and this lame minimal upgrades... for a 'premium' brand? o_O
Apple is insulting the intelligence of their customer base.

I thought I would never say this but Samsung's products are beginning to outshine Apple's.

Thicker than iPad Air 2 with speedier processor, heavier, non-laminated glass/screen, no anti-reflective coating, and MOST OF ALL... a lower price.

This, my friends, is what you call a margin booster. It's cutting out the fancy tech to provide a product that the average customer likes without the vague and hard-to-put-a-price-on tech for tech's sake. It's an iPad Air 3 in an iPad Air 1 skin.

It's cheaper to manufacture. It's also a way to differentiate the iPad from the Pro, which will carry higher margins and fancier tech.

Complain about it all you like. This is the Apple that will continue to rake in the cash and grow its ecosystem.

As a stockholder, I like it. As a techie with upgraditis, I don't. But that's OK.

is there a reason why it got fatter?

Yes. It seems the primary reason is probably because of the display. It's not laminated. Obviously I haven't yet used this particular iPad, but if the screen feels anything like the old Air, it will feel cheap, and people in the same room will complain about the noise (clatter clatter tap tap clatter).

Then really it's people's expectations not Apple's fault, Apple never mentioned that they were releasing products today. There will be events throughout the year in fact some people believe that there will be one in April, press releases have always been spec bumps or for small announcements.
