Do you ever give it a rest?

You don't like it and you won't be buying it. We get it.

I am just annoyed they didn't release that 10.5 iPad . I wanted a 10.5 iPad release and now it looks like it will be a couple of months away.

I am waiting for the OLED iPad 10.5 with no bezels. Not this piece of downgraded crap with a display from 4 years ago

The fact that Apple discontinued the Air 2 shows they knew people would get that over this tablet if allowed to remain in the lineup

Consumers have no choice because the Air 2 has disappeared and like it or not you have to get this entry level iPad. This iPad just made me appreciate my 3 year old Air 2 even more than the Pro 9.7 did. Thank you Timmy for saving my money. I really wanted to buy a new tablet but thanks to you that money goes towards my expected 1080ti purchase while I continue to wait for the 10.5 iPad to come out of your seemingly 10 mile long pipeline

The Air 2 will remain as a great legend
We're all entitled buy what we want to buy. Thank you Samsung for producing a phone I don't want I just get the iPhone 8 instead.

this was a "silent" refresh

don't confuse it with a new product release.

I know, many people who have lived their lives in the "Apple Bubble" might have forgotten what a silent refresh is. But it's a great thing for companies generally to do. it allows them to provide a "loved" or good existing product with more up to date specs and often includes price cuts.

the fact Apple has finally done a silent refresh of some of their products is fantastic. And for ONCE it looks like Tim Cook paid attention to the issues and complaints about the iPad lineup being "stale" and "too expensive" for just the base model.

if these aren't for you. Fine. Wait for the new products to be announced. but if you weren't in the market for a standard 9.7" iPad before today, this update isn't for you anyways

Not in a good way according to you.
Nope. According to the facts

Apple-iPad-sales-Chart-Q1-2016.jpg

Back in October 2015 I bought a refurbished Air 2 128GB from the Apple Store for £479. I haven't ever noticed that it was refurbished, it's felt no different to buying brand new.

17 months later, compared to the Air 2, this iPad SE has a faster SOC, larger battery but a heavier build and an inferior display for £429 (£50 less, or 10.3% cheaper).

I think that shows how good a deal the refurbished iPads actually are and how well the Air 2 has aged.

It's a great buy for consumers though and Apple will sell them. Apple has a better grasp of their users than pistersnin MR.

Honestly as long as performance is decent I'd probably rather go with slightly heavier and no screen coating and save the seventy bucks. Obviously there are people who disagree.

How does that even make sense? RAM costs next to nothing. They'd have to make a new chip just for this one line.
Let me see if I understand this right. Just because they use a screen they already have from the iPad Air, you think they're going to produce an entirely new chip (RAM is soldered onto the SoC). I can't see how that makes any sense at all.
[doublepost=1490159452][/doublepost]

Why is the iPad Pro still 600$? Because that's what the market will bear.
My concern also. Surprised that no one had this remark before. Now we kind of know that it is an Air 1 + A9, and not an Air 2 + A9, so wonder about the 2GB RAM.

Btw I think there is no 1GB device on their market (iPhone SE is already 2GB, also the iPad mini 4), so it should be 2GB..

Also wonder why they did not come up with a "new" iPad Mini with A9. Now only the Mini has A8..
Apple did alter the SoC on the iPad mini 4. The A8 that came with the iPhone 6/Plus only had 1gb of RAM, but the iPad mini 4 has 2gb to enable split screen multitasking. Using the A9 withe only 1gb of RAM would mean removing split screen multitasking, so it seems unlikely that Apple would remove software features.

kinda disagree this is a "silent refresh" in a traditional sense. its not like the took the air 2, bumped up the specs and cut the price. they frankensteined an air 2 like chasis, a 6s SOC, and an air 1 screen together. a step forward in some aspects (price, performance (maybe?)), and a step backward (screen). for me personally, the screen is deal breaker.

Did we decide of the Air 1 cases will fit? I no longer have an Air 1, but have a few cases including a Lifeproof one. I think the Air 1 had a mute button? Meaning the volume button no longer lines up?

You clearly haven't used an iPad in sunlight. Anti Glare is a big deal

Air 1 chassis. Same exact dimensions and weight as Air 1.

Be careful. You seem susceptible to AND - Apple Narcissist Disorder. It was first spotted with the introduction of the Apple Watch. It is a disorder where someone believes that every product that Apple produces should meet their needs even if Apple's intent was to target that product at a particular niche.

You continue to defend your criticism of the new iPad without taking into account who the target market is... and without having seen one in person. And you are annoyed that a rumor is still just that, a rumor. Essentially, you are complaining about a product that Apple created that is not for you and DIDN'T create one that IS for you. It's all about you.

It never made sense (at least to me) for Apple to produce a 10.5 iPad (Pro or non) at this point in time. If they do, they would most likely have to discontinue the 9.7 Pro... which they're not going to do.

if its an air 1 chasis then where is my mute switch?

It's a Frankenstein's monster mash of Air 1 and Air 2, but bears a greater similarity to the original Air in my opinion. I consider the fact that it is identical in dimensions and weight to the Air 1 to out weight the lack of a mute switch, therefore I see it as a very slightly tweaked Air 1 chassis.

If any precedent was set, it was when they released the iPhone SE. This new iPad is following in that regard. It is the iPad SE.

SE is different- it is deseriable because of the form factor. No one is going to go and buy this because "oh it has the body of the air 1".

That's not really true. The new 'iPad' replaces the Air 2 as the 'standard' full size iPad for people who don't need a Pro model. It's now the 'regular' iPad offering. The iPad 2 was just a much cheaper option if people seriously wanted an old iPad.
Just as much the iPad Pro 9.7 replaces the air 2 for people who want/need the more capable tablet of the time...
From these statements, it is obvious neither the iPad nor the iPad pro fully replace the iPad air 2. So the iPad is not more of an iPad air 2 replacement than the iPad pro. The iPad air product line just split in two.
[doublepost=1490213324][/doublepost]
Does this mean there will be no new iPad Pro?
Quite the contrary IMHO.
That's speculation at this point, hopefully we get the info soon.

It's disgusting what Apple has done to iPad! and NOBODY even mentioned (maybe I missed it - it's a lot to read)- They took away Rose Gold TOO! Don't they care anymore? --

So funny reading all this.. iPads are not selling like they did, Apple is trying to broaden appeal (ie make more $) with a cheaper iPad and a differentiated more advanced Pro line. Get a 9.7 Pro (used even better) if you really miss the Air 2, the 4 speakers are great and there's a Rose Gold too. I got a used gray one for $350, but easily had for 400-450, nobody is buying them, demand is low.

How did they take away rose gold?
The only rose gold Ipad was the 9.7 inch Pro

OOps thought i had one, I stand corrected. must have been a Pro I had. at least we have Rose Gold Watch still. (I checked).

This is not a bad deal for anyone wanting to save a few dollars. Apple needs to update hardware for MBP, Mac Pro's, iMac's, and Mac Mini's in the near future. Plus an updated iPad is in the works already if rumors are true.

Per Apple site, there is a new Smart Cover that shows compatibility with this 2017 version, plus Air 2. Odd that the Air 1 Smart Cover doesn't work? Did they move the magnets between the Air 1 vs Air 2 models?
