Well, the 9.7" Pro has the smart connector, can use the Pencil, is thinner, has tru tone display and 4 speakers.

Except that this iPad has the dimensions of the 2013 iPad Air. 7.5mm thick. Looks like it's designed to be the low cost option iPad. Excellent option though.

Apple should really look at including the Pencil with the Ipad Pro, that would make a big difference i believe

Is it possible that Apple will announce an early April event to show off the new 10.5" "bevel free" iPad, the next-generation 12.9" iPad Pro and the 128 GB iPhone SE with an upgraded SoC and Touch ID sensor?

If they want something else to be called Air that could be a reason removing the name from the 9.7".
But maybe they just want to get rid of the name, Macbook Air should be discontinued in not too long.

Another iPad to the already messy, fragmented, unnecessarily long line up of iPads to saturate the already saturated mobile market while continuing to leave the demand of Macs behind..

Long sigh.

I'd love to say we're losing faith Tim, but that was so long ago now.

Uh? It's not "another" iPad, they replaced the Air2, if anything they just simplified the lineup and naming scheme, and reduced prices.

Better reading the article before commenting.

Strangely enough, with this change they've actually streamlined a bit... removing the Air moniker, removing older models of the Air and Mini. They're back down to having 4 available iPads (still too many, haha).

This will just be the new iPad 2. It will be the entry level base model as they vamp up their Pro line and it will stick around for probably longer than it should. I don't know what everyone is getting their panties in a twist over. They are clearly positioning the future of the iPad to be in their Pro line, but they need a low cost entry model for average to below-average iPad users.

They put A9, not A9X in the new iPad.
I'm going to buy a cellular iPad next month for my mom and I'll have a look at benchmarks to compare the new iPad with Air 2 with A8X.
I can get a refurbished 64GB cellular at a lower price than the new iPad with 32GB, so I may go for the Air 2 to have more storage and a lighter product.
The A9 is a bit faster despite the A8X being a tri-core.

BOOOOOO.

This should have already happened a year ago.

Where is the updated Pro 9.7? Its literally all I want. Also, how the hell did it get thicker? I'm usually not one to want a thinner device, but really Apple?

Boooring. I keep what I have. 4 years old ipad does the job, Only I have to remember, not to update ios.

No, their stock is hitting all time highs. They don't desperately "need" anything man.

For those of you who have problems with the products, show them with your wallets my friends. Nothing more us as i consumers can do. A post on a website won't cut it.

I'm honestly stubborn and need a new ipad since my air 2 is having a hard time holding a charge. I've had it since launch so it's way out of warranty and don't want to spend money on something I already have, but you're right, Apple is growing even more than anyone could have expected.

The iPad air 2 was already starting to lag under iOS 10. I guess the inclusion of the A9 chip was simply to modernise the iPad and ensure it still runs iOS 10 fine. Otherwise, the iPad remains unchanged.

With the A9 chip, we get better single-core performance, though multi-core remains more or less the same. Better than nothing, I guess.

I think they realize releasing the new iPads would likely giveaway the design for the next iPhone. They want to save everything up for one event in September. If they don't update the retina MacBook, they are likely waiting for Coffeelake or Canonlake for substantial improvements.

They might actually want to debut the new Macs on their new campus or wait for WWDC to do it. Yes, I know they stop launching new Macs at WWDC, but things can change. Just like how they change the product names.

Apple today introduced a new lower cost 9.7-inch iPad that starts at $329 for the 32GB with Wi-Fi model and $459 for the 32GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model.

"iPad is the world's most popular tablet. Customers love the large, 9.7-inch display for everything from watching TV and movies, to surfing the web, making FaceTime calls, and enjoying photos, and now it is even more affordable," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "New customers and anyone looking to upgrade will love this new iPad for use at home, in school, and for work, with its gorgeous Retina display, our powerful A9 chip, and access to the more than 1.3 million apps designed specifically for it."

iPad is available to order beginning Friday, March 24, from Apple.com and starts delivering to customers and arriving next week in Apple Stores, through select carriers and Apple Authorized Resellers (prices may vary) in the US and more than 20 countries and regions, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. Denmark, India, Mexico, Norway, Russia, Turkey and other countries and regions will follow in April. Brazil, Taiwan and other countries and regions will follow in May.

Compatible with Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard!

This feels way too much like the iPad3 release to me. (er, excuse me - "the New iPad"...) --The first time I got "bit" by jumping in early (I did like the retina screen - Being significantly outdated tech a mere few months later, not so much.) Not even an upgradeable device any more. I think I'll wait a bit longer before refreshing and handing down the current generation of devices.

I can understand them updating the iPad, but why take the store offline for hours on end for basically a minor update? I can see no positives because people anxious to see other products being updated will only be disappointed.
