Let’s get rid of the cable part and get the puck in to some sort of adapter. It’s needless use of materials.

When the watch first came out I pitched the idea of a puck with a lightning port on the side to a friend of mine at Griffin. From what I understand, they pursued it but decided that the AW was going to be a niche product with little demand.

It’s pretty funny that they later released that gimpy little watch charging keychain.

Agreed. I would prefer it if they sold just the puck with a lightning/usbc port on the side or something.

It would be pretty neat if it had passthrough too, so you can go charger->watch.puck->iphone.

Part of me believes this is Apple’s way of subtlety changing to USB-C. Seems like an irrelevant cable to change the plug on since it mostly sits with a power brick in the wall. Most people I know anyway have it like that.

Agreed. I think that this is almost a next year thing for iPhones. I suspect that there’s two reasons why this hasn’t happened yet:

- usb-c needs to reach critical mass. I think it’s nearly there now

- the iPhone X generation wasn’t built with usb-c charging as it’s defauly charge method in mind & I suspect that Apple will need to do some internal tweaks to the power management in iPhones (I haven’t got a clue what - it’s just a hunch) to be happy for millions of phones to be charged in this way

Was super excited when apple went all USB-C on the MBP in 2016. Didn't think that they'd be SOOOO slow adopting USB-C after that. Some weird decision making going on at Apple. At the rate they're going now, I'll wind up upgrading my 2016 MBP before any other Apple product I buy includes USB-C.

This looks like more evidence of the New iPads to have USB-C

I’m not sure how someone (the originator of the rumor, not you specifically) arrived at this conclusion because it’s illogical IMHO.

There are several business and technical reasons why this shouldn’t happen including lack of a known HDCP deployment on USB-C and Apple branded USB-C cables don’t support power and data.

While I agree that my logic could be countered with elaborate reasoning, Occam’s razor would counter that notion.

I run the gamut on my reasoning in the video below.

Once Apple went USB-C on their Mac computers, Apple SHOULD have gone USB-C on EVERYTHING thereafter.

Yeah, it's mind boggling on their decision making. Only logical conclusion anyone can make is greed. They realize going USB-C on their mobile devices will eat up their profits on their obscene marked up prices for cables/chargers.

I fully expect that Lightning will be replaced by USB-C on the iPhones next year.

I doubt it. Supposedly they’re keeping the same chassis and design next year. USB-C is thicker than lightning and they can still milk lightning for another year. They will eventually have it though.

Well it will probably be during a new numbered phone year and not a S year. So I’m thinking next year or three years.

Very soon manufacturers will be criticized for not having USB-C and TB3. Apple made the right move by adopting it first. This is why I didn’t care about using dongles for a while. Those who bought 2015 macs back in 2016/2017 made a mistake.

How about having USB C in a box with AP4? Same with the iPhone btw. The mess and level of incompatibility in Apple ecosystem is a joke and starts really pissing me off.

You realize this would just piss off a different set of people, right?

I don't actually own any computers with USB-C ports. My newest Mac is a 2015 5K iMac.

The iPhone ships with a USB-A cable because most people have USB-A ports on all their stuff. And if you have a Mac with USB-C, you almost certainly have a C-A adapter to use most regular USB peripherals. So you can charge with that.

The length is a joke.

That's funny... I'm always annoyed at how unnecessarily long most Apple cables are. I much prefer these shorter lengths. But... it is bizarre that they're not selling both a short *and* long version of this cable.

Exactly. I'm fairly certain that the majority of Apple customers still have USB-A ports on their computers, as opposed to USB-C. Give it a few years, and I'm sure Apple will make the switch from selling their products with USB-A accessories to USB-C accessories. In the meantime, I'm sure they have no problem making a buttload of money from selling them separately.

And that the metal-backed charger isn’t included in the box anymore. My S0 came with a nice 2m charger with a metal back. The S4 comes with a cheap looking plastic back.

Price went up, quality and materials went down.

Don't get your hopes up.
I fully expect Lightning on iPhone to stay until the port goes away altogether, so at least for 2 more years.
And that's a good thing, since Lightning is a much more robust construction, a better fit for a phone.

The price of the charging puck certainly didn't go up.
Quality and materials of the Watch certainly didn't go down.

Kind of like the Samsung Galaxy watch charger.

Removable cable goes into the back. Use whichever cable length you like. Seems like common sense.
