The problem with the mini is that iOS is still just scaled down for the hardware, and not truly optimized for the smaller screen. This makes things easier for developers but suckier for all of the users who have to deal with smaller tap targets and cluttered interfaces.

And here I was thinking the problem with the iPad mini is its price. Silly me.

The iPad 2 is there almost exclusively to drive people to the Air or the mini. That said, Apple presumably makes as much (more?) off the 2 than the others just because the lines are mature.

They'll still sell 2s, but not many. $399 for many-years-old tech just makes no sense except to those who know almost nothing about tech. That said, an older buyer (or anyone with poor vision) might see good reason to spend $100 less to get the larger screen, and the increase in power in the new ones might not matter at all to them.

I am wondering how many will still buy the Ipad 2 because of ignorance. I think plenty.

It's disgusting how Apple charges 100 dollars for a 16 gig increase from the 16 to 32 gig and then only charges 100 dollars for 32 gigs when you upgrade from the 32gb to the 64gb model.

They can do it thought because like moths to a flame people will line up and pay.

I kinda wanted to buy a new iPad Air to replace my 2-year old iPad 3 64GB LTE but don't feel like they're really offering much incentive here to fork out $829 for the upgrade. Was hoping they'd drop the price or increase memory or something besides smaller and lighter. Think I'll wait another year and see what happens...:(

Apple made everything we wanted!
And everything we predicted. Someone around here even called the pricing scheme right, with iPad mini 1 for $299 and iPad mini 2 for $399. Kudos to the unknown predicter!
Same resolution as the full sized iPad! crazy!
Normal Pixeldoubling just as every Retina display ever. Color me not impressed. :D
So the updated iPad mini gets a price increase of 21 percent compared to the last one. That was pretty unexpected.
No that was exactly what was expected for this update, should both rumors Retina and A7 come true. Unexpected was the new naming for the "bigger" iPad. Don't call it Big, call it Air. Nice marketing stunt, Phil.
Ugh. So expensive.
You're kidding. Right?

4x cpu
8x gpu
4x pixels
1.21x price

Lets talk more about the part of the deal that has changed the least.
The price. :p

With this kind of specs for only $100 more the iPad mini 1 is way overpriced now. Much like the iPhone 5c isn't worth its retail price compared to the 5s. All the people who waited for Retina in the iPad mini made a very good deal. A 64-bit high-resolution wireless mini computer. This kind of progress in just one year is impressive and shows the true power of the new :apple: Incorporated.
is November 1st that much longer to wait? We've been waiting for this since the first mini came out.
We will survive the additional waiting time. But its definitely not coming on the 1st of November. It is coming when the other A7-iDevices stop eating up the whole 64-bit chip production. When the first flood of iPhone 5s and iPad Airs is shipped, than we will see the iPad mini 2 coming out. Sometimes "Later in November".

Not sure if I want a new iPad or if I would rather upgrade to a 13 inch Retina Pro.

All that beautiful hardware and still no Flash on these things? I guess that's just something else to look forward to.

if you think about how costly high resolution screens have been and how scarce they currently are: $70 isn't too bad. Everyone wanted the retina display on the iPad Mini (including me) and we got it. I think people complain and ask for too much and when they finally get it, they don't want to pay for it. Reminds me of a current situation happening today. Sad

For those buying either, be sure to get the 32GB at least. I have a 16GB(step-child 3rd gen Ipad) and always run out of space.

As for Flash, Puffin app is great.

They make the money on serving you advertisements in all the Google services and selling the information they learn about you to third-parties.

(Not a complaint or a slam at Google, by the way. It's how their business is structured.)

Google don't sell the information to any third parties, that's completely incorrect. They simply use the information to create a fairly vague profile of you to better target advertising to your demographic.

You can view their profile of you at any time, and you can completely opt-out of targeted ads and just receive generic ads.

I doubt many people use that iStuff to justify to the majority of normal users the price different.

The iPad 16GB has been $499. The iPhone has pretty much stayed the same prices since the 3G. People have been condition to a certain price but we get the mini revision and get a price increase.

Stinks, more so after the early comments about others charging you for OS, but we're giving you this free, the MB price drop, wow magical, then we have the thinner, lighter powerful iPad Air, yes sir the same price you always love $499, iPad mini Retina we beefed it up sorry we're going to make you pay for it so it doesn't cut into the full size iPad sells. Oh why while we're at it we're going to sell you a 3 yr old device for $400 instead of killing it off and moving the iPad4 to that price point.

What's that word kids use? That's cray or something like that.

why are you so upset about how Apple price their products? Looks at the device that you want and decide if the competitor offer you a better value. If Apple offer you the best value, then buy it. If not, buy something else. How Apple price their device is a very different discussion. For every device there is a price elasticity i.e if Apple raise the price of a device, a certain amount of demand will left. If Apple lower the price of a device, a certain additional consumers will buy additional units. I am one of the reason why Apple price their Ipad the way they do, I am ready to upgrade my Ipad 3 to Ipad air because I see value in doing so. If you don't see value in any of the device that they announce today, just move on and enjoy the device of your choice.

If I had $600 to spend on electronics, which I do not have, and the choice was iPad Air+cover+tax or iPad Mini+cover+tax+$108 or Nexus+cover+ $300, I would choose the mini knowing I would probably slam down the Nexus in frustration in a week anyway.

For $600 you could basically get the Nexus 7 and the soon to be released Nexus 5 phone...

An upgrade would be $829 - profit from selling old model.

I have a mini 64gb and whilst I could ebay it and get a retina one (which i'm sure looks lovely)

I'm holding out for what I really want ...... an iPhablet :D

If only you could make calls on the cellular version :D

This is the problem, people like you think the iPad is a mini computer. IT'S NOT. It's just an iPod touch with a bigger screen. Sure, there's some things you can do on an iPad instead of a computer but $400 for only 16 GB of memory?? I don't think so.

If 329 for the Mini 1 had been a good deal you might be right--but it wasn't.

The retina panel and the A7 are more expensive and when you consider the iPad Mini at $329 was eroding margins, if they had kept the price the same, they'd be taking a major hit. And dropping the price of the non-retina iPad Mini to $299 probably hurts margins on the product even more, so the iPad Mini with Retina is likely at $399 instead of, say, $379 to help recover those margins.

That would have seriously eroded margins on the line.

And given Wall Street one more reason to declare Apple "doomed' and knock another 15-20% off the stock price.

Understand all that, but as a consumer, I could care less about their margins.

So do these things shoot slow mo video like the iPhone or not? Im guessing no since I haven't heard anything about it.

The iPod touch is a mini computer. The iPad mini is just a bigger faster mini computer.

People like me (people who studied computer science) know the difference between memory and storage space.
You can order an 13" MacBook Pro with 16 GB of memory for only $1,599.00 – suddenly $400 sounds cheap.

When you have two computing devices with identical specs, and one is smaller than the other, the smaller one usually costs more, not less. The Retina Mini is almost surely a lower margin product than the iPad Air.

on the other hand:

iPad to iPad Air: 8x CPU, 72x gpu, 4x pixels, 1x Storage.
The memory upgrade prices are ridiculous.

(new Retina Mini) WAY too expensive :(
Curious... there seem to be a lot of people bashing the new iPad Mini for being too expensive, yet I don't see the same about the new iPad Air. For all intents and purposes, they're THE SAME iPad - the Air just has a slightly larger screen (but no more screen real estate to go along with it). You're actually getting $100 off the price of an Air for identical internal guts. I think a lot of this is just psychology.

Your right, all the iPad Air in a smaller package.

But compared to all the 7~8" class tablets, its much more expensive.
It's a full size price in a small package.

Original mini should have dropped to $199. Retina mini should have been priced at $299. With as expensive at they priced it I would not be surprised to see many many more ipad airs sold vs mini retinas in the coming year.

While I would love those price, it wouldn't make sense. The new mini is exactly the same as the new iPad air. Same chip and resolution (and I guess same internal as well). You want people to pay 200$ more for just a screen increase?

I don't understand the thought that a smaller device with the same specs should be cheaper. By that logic, shouldn't the iPhone 5s be something like $200 (unsubsidized)? I mean it's *tiny* compared to the iPad Air.
