I'm in the same situation (using the Solo3 while waiting for the AirPods). The charging cable is safely at home, and the 40 hour charge the S3 holds ensures I'll be able to charge them there. Pairing to my iP7+ was amazing, it sounds terrific, and it's linked to my Apple TV as well (great to watch movies later at night without waking up the house).

My use case remains to get the AirPods for work and taking phone calls, and the Solo3 for stuff around the house (mowing the lawn, walking the dog, late-night TV, etc.). Currently using the supplied lightning EarPods at work, and really looking forward to going fully wireless (not a fan of wires around my neck, so I will pass on the PowerBeats3).

I use headphones/earphones/whatever exclusively when I'm walking the dog. I mostly listen to podcasts, but sometimes music if I'm in the mood.

For me, I'm looking for comfort and convenience. I've been using EarPods for years -- they are very comfortable for me, but the wire drives me crazy. It's forever getting caught on things, or merely getting in the way. That's why I was so excited about the AirPods -- they seemed like dream scenario.

But then I saw a round-up of wireless headphones on CNN and thought I'd give the Beats Solo3 a try. I'm a little concerned about comfort and marginally concerned about looking like an idiot with big headphones on while I'm walking around. I guess I'll find out tomorrow!

Nah, you might lose some respect of your older peers, but you'll fit right in with the younger urban crowd.

I discussed this very important issue with one of my 16 year old students. She said the AirPods look ridiculous. Indeed, when I showed her the picture below, she laughed out loud for quite a long time.

She said that wearing the Beats would make me look like I was trying to look younger. But she probably wouldn't laugh at me. When I told her I mostly listened to podcasts rather than music she thought I was nuts.

I don't buy tech to look cool.

Nor do I.

But I'd prefer not to look like an idiot.

Don't pretend you're any different. You choose the clothes you wear because you think you look good in them. It's a part of the human condition.

I agree with you, but I would argue that since fashion is decided by people, what looks good and what doesn't too is up to people to change and influence.

When I first got my 4s, I had great aversion to using Siri (even in private) because I thought the idea of talking to an inanimate device was ridiculous. Now, I happily dictate to my iPhone regardless of whether I am alone or in public. I use Siri in shopping malls to calculate the prices of goods after discounts, for example, and I don't feel embarrassed or silly doing so in front of friends, colleagues or even complete strangers.

Of course, it helps that Siri has gotten way better and more accurate to make me comfortable enough to use it extensively.

Maybe it's the same with AirPods. Wear them proudly and confidently in public and give no indication that using them is anything out of the ordinary. If you give the impression that you don't have a problem with airpods, other people are less likely to think that something is amiss as well.

Sure, you might still invite snickers from some passers-by, but is that due to contempt or genuine envy?

:D

This part is fantastic, the kind of advice you would give to a teenager who needs a brace

The novelty of the AirPods "looking weird" will eventually wear off and people get used to seeing them.

...but then again cashiers are still in awe every single time I use Apple Pay on my watch a year later, so it may take a while.
