Apple Denies Abusing French Developers, Says They've Earned 1 Billion Euros From App Store

This from the country that fined a baker 3,000 euros because he opened 7 days a week during peak visitor season.
In France as in most of Europe the law usually mandates at least 1 day off per week and this day off is not a matter of personal choice: you *have* to take the day off.

Usually there are some special permits granted for specific jobs or specific situations like tourism or some events happening etc... but if the permit is not granted you cannot just decide to stay open outside of the legal limits and expect no consequences.

And which country would have a significant lower tax rate that is part of the western world? (Hint: the US has a max income tax rate of 57% according to wikipedia).

Your lack of algebra and facts shows.

Apple really abuses its developers. I can give you many example with my case. Apple has made it worse for us. I'm an Independent iOS Developer. Our app "Custom Notch" was removed by Apple. Our app reached No.1 in China App Store in Paid Overall. Since then a lot of copycat apps have come. We reported them all to Apple. And one among them reported us back that we are using his app name "Costom Notch". We released our app on Nov 22. He released only in Dec 15. China is bigger market than US App Store. We were making around $200 per day. https://medium.com/@brijit11/apple-...and-copycat-removes-original-app-3921d116fa60

ridiculous concept but unfortunately France has a chance to win.

Didn't France once legislate that only French could be used on the web? I'm probably misremembering that but something along those lines.

Government debt as % of GDP

France 90%
USA 106%

Both of you are being rather simplistic. Cash flow, borrowing power, GDP per capita, GDP per capita in that specific sector, etc...

Your lack of algebra and facts shows.

Says the guy who only quotes the federal tax rates but conveniently forgot about the state individual income tax rates (max 13.3%) and medicare tax (3.8%). Makes a total of almost 57% - so exactly what I said.

plus state and local, property, sales, etc...

Such stupid arguments from both sides.
Le Maire: Apple abuses developers. I won't say how, but they do.
Apple: We earned developers a certain amount of money, so that means we aren't abusing them.
As far as I understand the argument of Le Maire is about Apple and Google allegedly having too much contractual leverage compared to the developer.

As example, he claims Apple and Google reserve the right to unilaterally revise the contract at any time for whatever reason: such a contractual clause would be invalid in many European countries.

Manners, etiquette, politeness rings a bell?

You should look it up.

Ah .. paying 55% for 60,000 is the same or better?

Jesus, go troll in some EU outlet.

EUSSR - nuff said

And my family lives in it. Not France though.

Paying 55% income tax on all you earn PLUS mandatory health care - for the same amount we could have a very nice private plan with WAY better coverage - PLUS 20% VAT on - almost - all purchases PLUS inflated energy costs PLUS inflated municipal taxes PLUS you have to pay for private schools unless you want your kid to not learn his/her own language properly in school ...
I guess you family can emigrate to a country that doesn't have any of those amenities.

If this is in relation to Apple's 30% cut, Apple does not have a monopoly on phones/tablets, apps, or app stores. Developers have choice.
Afaik, there is no claim that Apple has a monopoly. Where did you get that idea? Even if there were a claim of monopoly, it would apply to Google and Apple - the two companies in the complaint. Since iOS and Android "monopolize" mobile marketshare that could be where a monopoly would warrant consideration. Again, since the claim wasn't made, afaik, the point is moot.

Even if they didn't have a choice, the 30% cut is there for a reason. Apple provides developers with a downloading platform and infrastructure, and syncing capabilities with iCloud API's if they so desire.
Most small developers wouldn't even be able to cover the costs associated with downloading and syncing services.

I'm pretty sure that the 99$ yearly fee just about covers the hosting/cloud/reviewers cost of the App Store Ecosystem.
Let's not forget that apps are the driving force of sales of those devices. Who buys an iOS device to just use iOS?

One important point: "In the statement, loosely translated from French to English". So we might not have the correct story. Something that happens a lot on the internet, even without translation issues.

Overly conservative economics. And they still fine people for offensive opinions, and at multiple times banned certain Muslim clothing. It's a beautiful country, and people there are much nicer than Americans, but they're stuck in the old times.

There are two main problems with the iOS App Store:

1.) Apple has a complete Stranglehold on App Discovery, and even more so now that it's basically a Curated App Store.

2.) Their "App Rankings" algorithm is catastrophically broken !

The problems could be EASILY fixed in just a few days by a competent team of Engineers / Developers, but for whatever reason, Apple likes to keep it the way it is.

Games and Streaming Media Content apps do well in the iOS App Store ... everything else doesn't !

Apple has never provided a breakdown, by category, of Revenue, and it's because Apple doesn't want that Info getting out ... the Retard so-called Pro Stock Analysts have never figured things out, AND Apple probably loves it that way !

I have never gone to the App Store to browse. I Find what I am looking for online, so I can read up on it then search for that app in the store.

Also, the app is broken af. Takes forever to load for some reason.

They do for iOS which is the main issue here I believe. I don't know why Google is being brought in there since for Android you can download apps from 3rd party stores (or just the web if you want)

Exactly

While I don't disagree with you the fact is one has to abide by the law.

I would bet most of the dear readers on this forum do not care much about French law, but about he "fairness" of how Apple shares app revenue. As has been stated already, a developer can decide for themselves if the compensation is fair enough.

1. Counterpoint: the internet.
2. Is that why AppShopper's rankings are broken?

I don't think Apple likes the way it is. Apple prefers restricting choice with their products, because it reduces confusion. If shoppers saw how many note taking apps were on the iPad they would recall the early days of the apps store when people thought the apps store was filled with hundreds of fart apps. If free apps that replicated the function of paid apps were easy to find than developers of said paid apps would either stop investing in their apps or they would avoid updating them. In the long run, for both Apple and Customers, promoting a few expensive apps is better than making all apps equally accessible.
