Tim, Netflix called and they are laughing. Not sure what this bit player video service will be, but there is sooo much catching up to do with other services.

"Pachinko chronicles the lives of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they migrate to and establish a life in Japan."

....starring Scarlett Johansson!

Agree...but over half the world's population is Asian.
So there is THAT angle.
Expect to see less and less content for (or featuring) white people. We are a dying breed to the TV/Ad/Movie industry.
Even my beloved SuperHero franchises are becoming more diverse :(

1. I find it hard to believe that China is going to beat down the door to watch a series about Zainichi.

2. I also have a hard time enjoying shows/series starring people that don't share my racial characteristics, because I lack the ability to feel empathy with my fellow man.

They are making original content. All they need is one hit show.

Yes, I read it and yes, I liked it. Whether it will translate into a great TV show depends on what you expect from TV.
I bought it on my kindle but haven't gotten round to reading it yet.

I think Apple would be more careful than that. They would probably go to great lengths to avoid any of the controversies that popped up from other projects as well, and will look for talent accordingly.

People said the same thing about Netflix catching up to CBS when they announced House of Cards, and now who watches network scripted shows weekly anymore? Then they said the same thing about Hulu catching up to Netflix when they jumped in with Handmaid's Tale. Then Amazon with Manchester by the Sea and The Big Sick.

The tech and media worlds are both littered with the corpses of businesses that thought they would never be overtaken, and fools who didn't try.

So is Apple going to be supplementing this service with access to older network TV shows? Or is it only going to be new content they’re funding? I think it will be harder to sell that as a stand alone service.

honestly i doubt they will get into streaming outside product. the rights are a mess to deal with. making the question really if this will be merged with Apple Music as some kind of Apple Media service or stand on its own

Let's hear the wisdom from the non-writers, non-directors who hang out on a tech website why this show is such a bad idea, ever before they've ever seen or know of anything about how it'll be conceived. I can pick any popular show, and if it didn't exist, I could tell you the concept and you'd shoot it down as a terrible idea that wouldn't work. The idea is but one part of a complex matrix which decides whether a show works or doesn't. And even then there's subjectivity. None of you doubters have a clue what you are talking about.

what if someone here is writing a novel, book, HBO series or bazooka joe comic strip about a tech talk websites, and are researching for their script?

maybe bundle unlimited icloud + apple music + apple streaming + texture magazine
$12.95-14.95 sounds a fair price (similar to prime) - however, Apple will probably want $20+

Yep. Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, House of Cards, Westworld...Pachinko. Winner.

Sorruy, but as a Chinese-American guy I cannot support anything that phonetically has the slur "chink" in it. Bad move Apple.

To be fair, Hugh's credit on Under The Dome as a writer is only for one episode. There's not much that could have been done to save that show in 42 minutes:) I hear The Terror was excellent bu I haven't watched it yet. Interesting many of the credits are sci-fi/horror in some way.
The Terror drug on for far too long

Maybe this should be retitled to “The Pachinko”.
Jokes aside, I’m curious about this story actually. Both as an immigrant myself and the rumors/bad-rap that pachinko machine parlors are handled in big part by yakuza families.
