I’d rather have them work on a more realistic solution by allowing those with M1 iPads to dual boot MacOS and use it as a desktop. I think there would be more groundswell for this and the road to achieving this is very close.

I think the only advantage of this research is to not be behind any other companies that find a market.

Apple fell behind when competitors started selling large smartphones. Then they had to play catch-up with the Max series of iPhones.

Other than that… not for me.

This article surfaces at least once every three weeks. It’s nothing we haven’t heard already many times over.

We know Apple likely is dabbling into the ‘foldable’ market, but I don’t suspect we would see anything for the next three years. I’m on board for a foldable display, but only if Apple can sell me on the flaw points being eliminated from the current foldable displays we see on the market, and I suspect they’re probably trying to manufacture a similar experience, but one that’s also relatively unique to the user.

This reminds me of the discussion when the original Samsung Galaxy Note launched with people saying who needs a screen that big, whereas today a 5.3 inch screen would be considered small. Having said that I have played with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and I don’t think the technology is there yet to be both an iPhone and iPad replacement.

I actually am seeing a few Galaxy Z Flips here and there. They are definitely stylish and garner attention. However, practicality wise, those who I saw with the phone on their desks just left it unfolded so they can see/operate the screen quickly. As such, functionality wise, the slab form factor is the ideal form factor in the end.

Foldable displays just seem like a complete gimmick to me. My iPad fits in my bag fine. Other than saving space, what are the actual benefits of a foldable device?
Sometimes I wonder how many times this story has been recycled and this comment as well.

Ditto.

I'm excited to see companies push the envelope with this kind of tech, but it still feels like a product in search of a problem, IMO.

If foldables catch on, Apple needs to be prepared to enter the market. They can't afford to sit on the sidelines like they did when bigger screened Android devices were coming out. Fortunately for Apple, I don't think foldables are catching on.

Foldables won’t catch on until Apple shows the world how it’s done.

That's selection bias, because you didn't have the alternative. ;)
(i.e. you probably included "fits a bag" in your tablet buying criteria, and "holds an iPad" in your bag buying criteria.)

The obvious benefits are: you could have an iPad that unfolds to twice the size, or folds to fit a bag half the size. Maybe you'd still pick the same size iPad and bag, but if it becomes foldable you get the full range of choices.

Having the ability to pocket a much larger display has clear advantages. Existing folding phones haven't gotten it right because they just double the device thickness.
Double folding could be an interesting iPhone, if done right
Multiple folding could be an interesting iPad, if not too thick

Groundswell? iPads sell more than ANY macOS device now, 2 to 3 times or more depending on the year. They sell more iPads in a year than Dell sells of their entire laptop line. It would be a quite unnoticeable “groundswell”.

Don't worry, when Apple do come out with a foldable display, naysayers like yourself will be posting about how innovative Apple are, and how Apple created the foldable screen market!

I’ll have to agree here. Like a solution looking for a problem.

I’d rather a foldable watch screen. One that goes 16:9 so I can watch the latest blockbuster!?

Had an iPhone 13 pro max. Bought a flip 3 for fun. Haven't picked up my iPhone since January. I can't bring myself to sell it, but honestly, Apple is going to need to give me more than "battery/camera" update if they want my $2000 (AUD). Flips are so much fun after years of "battery and camera" updates.

Young believes these devices could form a whole new product category for Apple and result in a dual-use product, potentially able to work as a notebook with a full-size on-screen keyboard when folded and as a monitor when unfolded and used with an external keyboard.
This rumor, mixed with the other rumor of iPadOS changing to macOS…. mouth watering. I hope this happens!

I think the future is the reverse of the current iPhone + Watch relationship. Watch + a rollable screen accessory.

At the start, the Watch was a symbiont extension of the iPhone and has increasingly been becoming independent with each new Series. With Apple silicon, Apple Watch is catching up to the processing power of the current iPhone much faster than it took the iPhone to get to this point.

Once there, I can see a pen style display being an accessory to the Watch which powers full iOS and connectivity. You always carry your Watch with you, and sometimes you bring a cylindrical pen like device that you can pull a screen from to interact directly like you do with an iPhone today.

Apple is preparing for the future that will soon exist, not trying to fit a foldable screen into today's iPhone paradigm.
