Foldable displays just seem like a complete gimmick to me. My iPad fits in my bag fine. Other than saving space, what are the actual benefits of a foldable device?
But that’s the thing. It would be neither one well. Is an iPad twice the width of your iPhone really useful as an iPad? How about an iPhone more than twice as thick as the one you have now? And all for the sake of a gadget that folds. This is the definition of a gimmick. It feels like a tech looking for a home.
How would it make you feel if they produced it? Would you be really upset?

You have something that takes up less space when folded, but when you want to use it, it expands out for a large screen. "Best of both worlds" if they can pull it off.

No different than wearable tech and by extension the A-Watch. Why would I look up stuff on my watch when I can just whip out my phone? Wearable tech took some time to get there, but it's become quite popular.

Still not sold on foldables. If Apple makes a foldable device maybe they can change my mind but so far Samsung and Microsoft have not provided a compelling use-case for me.

My guess, it's for the new re-designed Apple Watch. The new flatter redesign might give less room for battery, as such Apple would probably need to thin out other parts.
Here's a crazy idea: howsabout putting the battery in the wrist strap. Or an even crazier idea: make the watch bigger. Mechanical watches the size of dinner plates were a big thing a while back.

Battery in the strap: impossible due to interchangeable straps.

Bigger watch: I believe the 45mm is quite big. Plus there's the weight issue. Apple watch is marketed as a fitness companion as well, as such the weight cannot be too cumbersome.

The tech itself is useful. Apple has been using foldable OLED since the iPhone X. The folding part is useful to achieve the edge to edge look without a chin for the controller.

What's questionable is implementing it into an actual folding screen. Right now, it's still too early as even the latest Samsung Fold/Flip are still suffering from cracks after a year or so. So durability is still an issue if you turn the folding screen into an actual moving part with wear-n-tear.
Nailed it.

Being able to fit your iPad in your pocket, of course. If they can get the tech to work, with high quality and lasting durability, it's a no brainer really.

I'd be extremely keen on an iPhone Max Plus that folds down to a standard iPhone size and slides into my pocket, and folds out to something with the width to still be held in one hand whilst the other hand operates the screen, and yet with a significantly bigger screen than an iPhone Max.

My future laptop and tablet, love it! Just waiting to see how its usable for designing. A pen and so on... , and will buy it! Would be even more nice to have with a MacOS, but i don't see it comeing...

I’d be mildly disappointed in Apple for bandwagoning, indifferent to the product when I shop, and predictably amused when they sell fewer than the iPhone Mini, which they killed over disappointing sales.

like you said...you need a bag for your ipad. You answered to your own question. people want bigger and bigger display...and now the limits sits around 6.5-7" as a solid factor...for us to place an bigger display than 7" into our pockets, foldable is the way
For these foldables, you dont need a bag
I don't need a bag for my iPad. I need a bag for all the other things I carry daily. My iPad just happens to be in it.

Your iPad fits in your bag. Then why do you need an iPhone? Can't you just carry your iPad with you everywhere instead of a miniaturized pocket computer? /sarcasm ??‍♂️
Because I call people from my iPhone. What a ridiculous comment.

You don'tactually believe that do you??

Oh dear
